@Purpledaisy: From 12-16 months she has just been at 19 pounds give or take a few ounces. Her head and height are all still on her own curve; it's just weight that just suddenly plateaued. So I think that's why they're not super concerned yet since she seems to be totally fine meeting all other milestones but his stance was it doesn't hurt to star ruling things out.

@snowjewelz: how much does your LO weigh? Is their height proportionate to their weight? I have two tiny kids and they have never been sent for any further testing. They haven't plateaud completely, but they gain weight very slowly.

@snowjewelz: Geesh not til like 16 months (I just looked at his chart 21 lbs at 10 months, 26lbs at 18 months).
His Doctor (PA) was not concerned but I have learned long ago that they do not provide the oversight a worried mom provides. AKA she barely examines him and unless I bring something up it's never a concern :bummed:

@snowjewelz: Good call. I've been tested for CD and it's just a blood draw (which I know is much easier for an adult than a baby.) I hope she catches up really soon!

@gotkimchi: because it’s just a sweat test maybe so it’s something “simple” to do? I don’t think they are SO concerned just yet. My gut is thinking/hoping she is just the typical tiny Asian baby and will catch up....

I've seen at least 3 to 4 threads on the same topic in the past year, because I always click on them, because the same thing happened to my son around one year.

My son was in the 95th+ percentile ages 0-6m, then 70-90 for months 6-12, and since then has barely made the 50th percentile for the past 2.25 years. It all had to do with less breastmilk and preferring playing over eating once he became more mobile.

@snowjewelz: The 'lick' test shouldn't matter if she's sweating or not because kids with Cystic Fibrosis lose salt through the skin/sweat constantly.

As long as your daughter is growing in some way and continues to eat and eliminate I don't think there's necessarily an issue. But if there it the early you catch it the better it is.

@snowjewelz: I know, right? Apparently it has to do with switching from the lay-down scales to the stand-up scales, which can affect the outcome. Plus her height measurements have always been super inconsistent and approximate.

How much do you trust your doctor? When I took my younger son to his 18 month appointment my doctor weighed him and said he hadn’t gained any weight or gotten any taller, and referred us to a paediatrician, who weighed him and had him 1.5 lbs heavier and 3cm taller than our GP.

@RKitty: Thank you  I mean, culturally it's really not THAT abnormal for Asian babies to stall in growing (she did grow in height), so I'm not super super concerned. Neither are the doctors right now, but I guess it's the what if she goes back next month, that would make month 5 with no gain.

I'm def gonna lick her! But it's not so hot here that she'd be sweaty....

@snowjewelz: Lick her. If her skin is salty tasty it can be a sign of Cystic Fibrosis. It's weird I know but I've heard it's pretty accurate. Plus as long as you did her PKU blood tests as a newborn that's one of the diseases they test for - but false positive are possible.

Hopefully you get a answer soon!

And don't worry about being a mama bear for your daughter. Sometimes it hard to get doctors to listen to you but you know your daughter best. And don't be afraid to get second opinions if you feel it's needed.

@winniebee: yep, this was the 1st weight-in and we'll go going back every month. She def got fussy with eating while teething, but I know that K1 wasn't even as good of an eater and they all go through illness and teething but K1 still managed to gain, so I'm not sure what's going on with K2! She looks plump enough and even has a little belly!

@snowjewelz: So sorry you are dealing with this! My kids do lose significant weight when sick, but seem to bounce back after. Ty was my smallest and I definitely remember that he LOST weight between 15-18 months because of a really bad illness. By the time of his next visit he was back on track. Doesn't hurt to do some testing though. I might also ask for some weight checks - maybe monthly?

Update -

So 4 months later (1 month after this post) she still didn't gain any weight  We are going to start doing some "easy" tests to start ruling out other issues. For one, a simple sweat test to rule of cystic fibrosis. We have no family history of it and she doesn't have other symptoms, so this shouldn't be it.

She's meeting milestones, eats pretty well and we've upped whole milk and fat consumption so I'm concerned about not absorbing nutrients at this point...

@snowjewelz: DD has not gained since her 12 month appt. She's just over 14 months now. I only know her weight because I took her in for an ear check today and asked them to weigh her because I felt like her diapers had gotten looser. The doctor wasn't crazy concerned, and DD had been sick recently with a bad cold, but she said we can try upping the fat content in her solids and we will re-evaluate at her 15 month appt.

I am making her oatmeal in the morning with whole milk and peanut butter. She doesn't like plain avocado but she'll eat guacomole with crackers, or Beech Nut organic makes a pouch that's avocado, green beans and peas (tastes awful) that I mix with applesauce. She does eat whole milk yogurt for lunch. She absolutely will not tolerate drinking whole milk, even if it's mixed with breastmilk, but we are going to keep offering. She only nurses twice a day now but I might start offering a third session in the afternoon again just to help her out till the next weight check. I think maybe Gingerbebe is the poster who always has great tips for adding fat to kid's foods so hopefully she'll chime in!

@snowjewelz: we've had the failure to thrive label, but apparently they only label babies under 12 months that, so you should be good there! :silly:

Has she been sick at all? What it seems to happen with us is we'll gain weight, get sick and loose weight, so from the dr's perspective nothing has changed, but there's more going on.

I would try not to worry - that's such an active age, I feel like they don't gain very much! My youngest (11 months now) had some weight loss (ugh) when he had pneumonia a few months ago and I got super freaked out. So he got lots more avocado, peanut butter, etc. and he has jumped back up a little. I'm sorry mama, I know it's hard not to worry!

@snowjewelz: I doubt it’s anything! We did hve to do weight checks with him when he was even younger (like 4-9mo) and we did try stuffing him with high fat food etc. the doctor said the two things she would test for are thyroid and celiacs. I think it was both blood tests
