LO just went through this (she's 17 months so she went through it at your LO's age). I think part of it was that it is getting light earlier (we made it as dark as a dungeon in her room, and that helped), part of it was developmental (she went through the language explosion) and part of it was timing, as you suggested. I think she was in the process of moving bedtime later but wasn't quite ready to do so - i've read that around this age they start to move bedtime, sometimes as far back as an hour later! i will say that we shifted bedtime later first to see if it would help and it didnt, it just resulted in less sleep, so clearly she needed to get there on her own.

I've never gone by awake time, because LO doesn't seem to have an issue with too much awake time, but hopefully it's a short phase for you like it was for us! also, LO gets 10-11 hours a night and 11 is pretty much her max. she does ok on 10 too as long as it's good solid sleep. whatever seems to work best for your LO!

@Mrs Green Grass: oh no! I hope she doesn't have any more hiccups in sleeping! This is the only thing that's confusing me since she was a newborn!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Good luck...our very worst sleep time was around 18-20 months. Hopefully you'll avoid it! : )

@Mrs Green Grass: OK that's what I was thinking too. We'll try pushing her bedtime back to 8 again.

I would push bedtime back a little if wake-time is the biggest issue for you. Approx. 13 hours is good. My LO sleeps 11-12 overnight typically with a 2 hour nap, but bedtime is between 8 and 8:30 and wake time is between 7 and 8.

DD has slowly been waking up earlier and earlier lately. This morning it was 530. I'm not sure how much sleep she should be getting at this point with her being only on one nap. Her "normal" schedule is:

630-7 Wake up
730 Breakfast
915 Snack
1130 Lunch
12-2 Nap
300 Snack
500 Small Snack
600 Dinner
715 Bed

I used to have her nap from 1230-230 and Bedtime around 8, but she started taking a long time to fall asleep, so I pushed up her naptime up to see if that would help. I feel like she needs 11 hours overnight, but she's waking earlier. Plus, isn't 6-6.5 hours of awake time too much? She doesn't really have sleepy signs, so I have to go by hours of awake time. How much awake time should she be having each day? Isn't 10-11 hours enough?

She isn't sick, has all her teeth, except half of a molar left. No canines yet.
