Mine is 2 and we just offer her what we're eating and have her sit and interact and decide what she's going to eat from what's offered. She has gone through phases where she eats a lot, phases where she barely eats anything and throws everything on the ground, picky phases, not picky phases. Her weight has tracked all the way along and we started doing it at 6 months. I don't want dinner to be an area where we are fighting - I just feel like it's a losing battle and could create a vicious cycle.

My 17 month old has been a total nightmare last several weeks too. It's often food related. I am benefitting from all of this good advice!

I follow her lead. I figure she knows better than I do if she is hungry or not. I offer her leftovers or another healthy snack when she asks next. I have found that letting her sit at her little art table or on my lap (annoying but whatever if it works!) at this age (also 17 months) has helped a lot. I'm pretty lax with pushing food because I'm terrified of giving her any complexes around food after I have had a severe eating disorder in the past. If it makes you feel any better, my DD has been a total crazy nightmare lately,
Too! I think it's just a rough phase.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: if there is good she likes and she just won't eat, I let it go. It's rare for her to do it for multiple meals in a row (though when she is being like that I make a point to have something she really likes at at least one meal a day so I know she's getting the calories). Toddlers are just crazy.

Also my LO isn't generally a huge milk drinker, but some days she just drinks a ton of milk and doesn't eat that much. Oh well.

My 19 month old just started this, ugh. He's flat out refused dinner 3 nights the past week, and I try not to panic and tell myself he isn't going to starve. We just make him sit and interact with us as long as possible to see if he will eat, and that's it.

He does get a cup of milk before bedtime so he doesn't go down totally empty. Yay for indepence :silly:

@Foodnerd81: yeah, I usually make 1 or 2 things I know she likes, (like rice and usually broccoli) but even that she doesn't eat. Ugh. I usually do the milk after dinner too but my dh filled up her milk cup too much and she drank a lot. Double ugh.

I try to make sure every meal has something I know she likes (and is healthy). So she may not eat the broccoli but I know she will eat the meatball and have something in her stomach. Then again, I'm absolutely guilty of making meals just for her, since DH and I eat dinner after she goes to bed. If she asks for something after dinner I'll usually just offer her milk, which so far has been fine.

Sounds like she is just starting to assert her toddler independence. Fun stuff.

@hilsy85: good advice! I think it might be turning into that because I'm thinking that surely she must be hungry and so I try and try. It might be part of a wonder week thing too, she's been unhappy about 75% of the time. My dh just had her for like an hour today and said he doesn't know how I do this every day, all day.

@MrsH: Maybe! We just got back from the beach too and she took a almost 3 hour nap today and we had to wake her up. I think early bedtime is in order.

I would just stay consistent. You get to choose what she is offered and when, she gets to choose how much of it she eats. The best thing I ever did was stop worrying so much about how much my LO ate. He has yet to wake up in the MOTN hungry--if he is hungry after dinner is over, I will usually offer fruit, or dinner leftovers. I would just try to avoid turning it into a power struggle!

So, what do I do about this? My 1.5 year old is getting worse about this. She'll eat maybe 2 or 3 bites, I try to get her to eat more, no dice, then she eventually throws s tantrum and tonight she was flailing and hit her head on the table. Ugh. I know she'll say she's hungry later and I'll offer her the leftover food, but she'll be angry with that. Should I just keep offering the same thing? I do NOT want to make separate meals and get in that habit. She always has had what we have. It just seems to be getting worse and worse. :(

Eta:she had mac and cheese for lunch, ate it all, but only ate a couple bites of meat and no veg. She's always been good with veg! Tonight she ate like 2 bites of broccoli and 1 chicken and 1 bite of rice. Gah. This has been every day for a while now! She's been so crazy lately!
