DS is still in his inflatable tub inside the bathtub mostly because I like to keep the water warm and high up on his belly without having to waste a million gallons of water. It also keeps his toys close by.

DD loves a full tub or else she gets cold! She's 2 and we go belly height. One of us is always with her so I don't see what could possibly go wrong. She has known for a while know how to drain the water and I tell her often if she ever needs help to drai the water!

LO is 2.5 and I still keep it that low. Mainly because I have her lie down to rinse her hair and she would flip out if the water was that high.

I've been doing joint baths for our kids since LO2 could sit, around 6 months. Water depth sometimes gets as deep as 6 in, depending on when I think to turn the water off. I'm never away from them, and I think there is a danger for almost any depth. (Occasionally one of them will slip and then definitely come up sputtering, no matter the depth.)

Our daughter is in a phase where she wants mommy or daddy in the tub with her, so because we are literally right there it's pretty high. a little over waist level for her.

I go a little above her legs being covered. I'm cheap and don't think more water is necessary! :P But on nights I let the water go a little too long and it's to her belly I do think it's too high for my comfort. The girls bathe together and sometimes they get a little crazy!

The depth of the water is directly related to the time it takes for me to chase LO down and get her stripped naked lol. At least covering her legs. Sometimes it is mid-belly. I don't worry about it either way, I'm never more than an arm's length away from her.

I run it to about butt crack level mostly just to save water (how's that for eloquent?). Sometimes she's having too much fun with the water coming out of the faucet and gets to belly button level.

Thanks for the responses already! Maybe I am being a little cautious/paranoid!

@FaithFertility: @petitenoisette: I totally kept his small tub in our bigger tub for a while! I got the fisher price one that has a seat built in. It was great and I kept it for so long because our tub is really deep and I was afraid that having him directly in the tub would be hard on my back and just make it harder to clean him. He stayed in it till about 15/16 months 😳 But I will say that I think it helped to train him to stay sitting still in the tub. He never tries to stand and he just sits in the same spot playing. When it's time to wash his bottom I say "let's stand and wash your tush!" And he reaches for my hand and I help him up. Wash and rinse and he sits right back down, no protesting. Gosh, I love that kid 😍

@MrsKoala: "around his hips" is way more eloquent than "covers his legs and privates". 😂 I am way less articulate than I used to be.

My youngest is 14 months and the tub is REALLY full because his big sister is in it too and loves to have lots of water (and by the end of the day I don't have much fight left in me!). He's never had a problem and I'm always an arms reach away.

By this time, we had started co-bathing so we would fill it up to our bellies and she would sit in our laps. Sometimes DH and I would both be in there (jetted tub with jets off) and sometimes it would just be me.

DD has used the real tub since before her first birthday. DH tends to be more cautious and fill it only a few inches, whereas I go mid-belly to keep her warmer. She is 21 months. As long as you are right there and actively engaged/supervising, I think it just depends on what you are comfortable with!

Ha, my husband thinks we should fill the tub way more than I do too! Though DD is almost a year and still uses the infant tub, but that's more because I'm too lazy to clean our bathtub regularly so trying to keep her in that one as long as possible :silly:

Now that my son is 17 months and obviously able to sit on his own, he sits directly in our tub. I have been filling the water to about 3 inches. It covers his legs and privates.
My husband is always commenting that we should fill it much deeper. I think he would like for it to be mid-belly. So I guess 6 inches?

Am I being overly cautious? One of us is always there within arms reach. I can't find anything on The Google about toddler water depth specifically.
