Phew, thanks for picking up this thread, bees! I definitely think DS is having some sleep changes. It's funny how with sleep everything is great on the same routine for a while, until it just ISN'T all of a sudden.

I pretty much decided that his naps are getting too long, pushing 3 hours most days. I tried cutting his naps shorter the past few days. I think that putting him down at 1 pm instead of noon will work best for our schedule. I did that yesterday and he only had 1 wake up, around 11:30 pm when I was about to go to bed.

I definitely don't think want to make bedtime any later if I can help it. I need my time after 8 pm to get chores done and rest!

Yep it happened, only in the form of SUPER early wakings. Like 4-4:30. For a week. Or more ?? I can't even remember. She normally goes down between 6:30 and 7 so we had to stick to the earlier times so she wouldn't get overtired. It was around that time I was switching to one nap (or maybe that had happened at around 17 months). The regression was real for us.
Even now she is still waking early. 6 am is a good day.

@Jass: Funny I was going to say the opposite; I would go earlier. My DD is 20 months and goes to bed by 7:00-7:15 every night. Earlier bedtimes are usually better for sleep issues.

We had some truly startling sleep issues around 19-19.5 months that could have just been related to illness, some routine changes due to holiday travel, teething, etc., but I'm inclined to think some kind of a regression was happening. DD has never, ever had issues with going to sleep at bedtime ever since we first sleep trained at 4.5 months old - she's 20 months now - she loves bedtime and always gets in her crib happily and relaxes with her animals until she falls asleep. A few weeks ago she started reacting like the crib was made of lava. Just screaming and crying like she couldn't bear to be put in there. Same thing every time she woke up through the night. The only thing I can figure is that she was having nightmares or for some other reason had gotten scared of being in bed alone.

We got through it eventually by carefully explaining to her before bed that she is safe when she's in her crib, it's okay to be scared, we're always there for her, etc. and throughout the bedtime routine saying "three more books and it's time to get in your crib" etc. so she was prepped for it. That helped a LOT and she's back to normal now. Thank goodness.

@macintosh: OMG yes. We're in the thick of this right now, too. DS2 has always been a great sleeper, except for teething, and now he's struggling to settle down and sleep at night and is getting up insanely early. It's adding up to a very tired toddler who is much more tantrum prone with this lack of sleep...and the less he sleeps, the harder it's getting.

@macintosh: I agree with @SweetiePie: try to stay consistant....... DD started waking MOTN and I was 4 months pg and exhausted so we would bring her in out bed, well that led to every night and co-sleeping which was OK for our family but I know many want to try not to!

Yes! The 4 month and 18 month regressions were the only discernable ones for us.

Right between 17-18 months he started waking once a night 3-5 nights a week. Usually around 2/3am but as early as midnight and late as 4am.
Fortunately he only did it once a night (maybe a scant handful of times it was twice) and he always went back down quietly with a quick 2 min rock. Sometimes he did stay up but he was quiet. Mostly he went back to sleep.
It lasted for I want to say 2 months 😬 It wasn't nearly as bad as newborn days or the 4 month regression. But it was still hard because he'd been STTN 12 hours for over a year. So to go back was hard!

My advice is to stay as consistent as possible because it IS just a phase and you don't want to create new sleep habits. I always just walked in, didn't speak to him, didn't make eye contact. Just picked him up. Maybe shushed. Rocked. Put him back. I didn't want him to get too much out of the wakeups, if that makes sense. I wanted to make them super boring so he got over them. And he did! Your LO will too :-)

Is this a thing that your toddler went through? For the past 2 nights, DS (19 months) has woken up around 11pm/12am and been up for what I can only assume is hours. I'll go in when he cries out for me and pick up all his stuffed animals and wubbanub. He calms right down but usually fusses again as soon as I leave. He seems to be wide awake. I'll go back to sleep but he will wake me up again several more times.

He's not teething, not sick, and he naps just fine. He's been STTN and putting himself to sleep since 9 months. Once in a while he has one wake up and goes right back down. He wakes around 7:30 am, naps 2-3 hours in the afternoon, and goes to bed at 8 pm. I tried shortening his nap today but he was exhausted by bedtime from last night. Any thoughts?
