For us, these things have always been phased and the bad habits we start do not stick around. We have a bed in the nursery so when she goes through sleep regressions, one of us usually ends up going in and sleeping in the bed with her through the morning. Then she goes back to normal after a few days. I try not to worry too much about setting up a bad habit (but that may come back to bite me still!)

@blackbird: we tried CIO for bedtime a couple nights ago and it was awful. 40 min of absolute uncontrollable hysterics for "mama". I sobbed in the other room the whole time and he still woke up at, like, 5am. We did a little CIO at 9 mo old, but this time was so much worse. Just not sure if I have the heart... Or if it'll work. :-/

We are going through similar issues right now at 17.5 months. He has never been a great sleeper but currently we are getting an extra wakeup each night and he isn't falling back asleep easily anymore. Hoping it's a phase that ends quickly!

Ummm.....it went to total shit for about 6 weeks. And it just...stopped and went back to normal.

For this situation, it sounds more like a habit was developed than anything. You started holding his hand, it worked, you kept doing it, now he wants it all the time. I would just stop going in for a few days, which will suck, but he'll realize he doesn't get that anymore. That's what I'd do, though.

At a loss here on the right thing to do...

LO is 19 months old. He's been sleeping through the night since 9 months old. Was able to put himself to sleep for night and naps since about 12 months old. For the last ~2-3 months, he needs one of us there to hold his hand to fall asleep - but still slept through. The last week, he's been up very early (3:51am today!) persistently calling for us. If we leave him alone and don't do anything, he cries for us for 30 min, sleeps for 30 min, and then repeats that cycle until ~6am when he's up for good. Brutal. If we go to him and hold his hand, he will go back to sleep - but then we're stuck sleeping on the floor by his crib.

If I knew things would magically go back to normal, I wouldn't mind going in there for a period of time. But I worry we're setting up more bad expectations and habits.

Thoughts? Advice? What did you do when your toddler's sleep went to crap at this age???
