Earlier naptime? I would try like 11-11:30. Also bedtime as early as possible. My 2.5 yo is often in bed by 6:30 on daycare days, which people think is crazy, but he needs it.

@bees_knees: Ahhh I see, that makes sense, hopefully he will lengthen the nap so that you still have a bunch of overlap.

@Foodnerd81: I’m just thankful he sttn! Someday I’ll prob be dragging him out of bed as a teenager

@mrswin: maybe we’ll try that! I sah...also have a 3 year old so I was trying to coincide naptimes so I got some down time too! Also 37 weeks pregnant, so our schedule will likely be all over the place soon. 😆

@bees_knees: At 19 months 6 hours may be too long of a wake time before the nap which means that he is overtired and then is taking a short nap. When we first switched my DD to one nap it was starting at 11:30am and eventually she lengthened it to 3 hours, then we were doing a 7pm bedtime and she would wake up around 6:30.

It took us until probably around 30 months before we pushed the nap back to start at 1pm. For along time our sweet spot was 12:30pm after waking at 7am.

I would try shifting the nap forward, maybe 5 hours of wake time and then sticking with that for a while to see if the nap lengthens. While the adjustment is taking place you will likely need to move bedtime earlier as well between 6 and 6:30. Do you work out of the home?

@bees_knees: sigh. He sounds more like my first daughter. Once she was up, she’s up. There’s hope- she’s four now and if she wakes up in the morning before her clock lights up she actually does play quietly in her room. It just took a few years to get here!

@Foodnerd81: yeah he never falls back asleep. I used to leave books in the crib for DS1 and he would read them and sometimes fall back asleep, but DS2 pitches them out of the crib immediately. Even if I try to sneak them back in there after he’s asleep, he’ll wake up at like 1 am, see the books, and throw them on the floor :silly:

@mrswin: nap begins anywhere from 12-1, depending on our day. Usually around 12:30.

@bees_knees: have you tried just leaving him in the crib when he wakes up too early? My 2 year old somewhat frequently wakes up early, cries for a couple of minutes, then goes back to sleep- both after a short nap or in the morning. Either way she wakes up from naps soooo grumpy. But in the morning I’ve seen her wake up, make some noise, play with the baby dolls in her crib, then go back to sleep for another half hour.

We also dropped to one nap pretty early and it was tough. She probably sleeps more now at 2 than she did at 1.5, but it just happened. Nothing I did helped it.

@looch: @gotkimchi: I tried going back to two naps but he would just nap’1.5 hours in the AM and then nothing at all in the afternoon

@iluvboba637: I’m counting my blessings that at least he sttn and isn’t up before 6. I am NOT a morning person ha ha

The only thing that worked for my early riser son was to keep him on two naps. I tried an earlier bedtime, but it didn't work, he needed more daytime sleep.

No tips just commiseration. My DD is 20 months and we dropped her to one nap in Dec. She sleeps 7:15 or 7:30 til 5:30 or 6:00. But she's happy in the morning. She still wakes up once a night. She naps ~11-12:30 sometimes until 1 or 1:30 if we're very lucky. But on the days she wakes up from her nap ~12:30 she screams and is clearly still tired but won't go back to sleep. I'm waiting for her nap to get longer too. I think my older DS didn't extend his nap to 2.5-3 hrs until he was ~2.5 y/o.

DS2 is almost 19 months. He has STTN (7:15-6:30ish) since he turned one. He dropped to one nap in November and we are still struggling with him getting enough sleep. His dropping to one nap didn’t lengthen the nap at all (it’s about 1.5 hours, when before he was taking two 1.5 hour naps). Now I realize that 6:30 is a completely acceptable wake up time, and 1.5 hours is an acceptable amount of time to nap—but it is CLEARLY not enough rest for him. He wakes up so so so grouchy (both in the mornings and after his nap) screaming at the top of his lungs and half the time almost falls back asleep on the changing table while I change his diaper. I keep waiting for either a) longer nap or b) later wake up to happen, but so far nothing. Tips? Commiseration? An earlier bedtime crossed my mind, but logistically 7:00 is the earliest we can do.
