@JJ2626: So at about 11 months everytime we would change her diaper she was dry. And she would pee/poop only during the diaper change. So her pediatrician recommended quickly putting her on the potty as soon as we took the diaper off and I guess it just clicked for her. She wasn't fully potty trained til after she was over 2 because she couldn't always ask to go at first ans then couldn't get the timing right. But she started the process early

Thank you everyone for your stories and info. I am going to do my best to stay relaxed and let him lead on this (but potty training stresses me out big time so that may be easier said than done). It’s hard not to get excited, ya know? Hopefully I’ll be back in a few months posting an update!

My first was almost potty trained at 18.5 months but then I had DS2 and backed off. He was still using the potty consistently at home which he started doing around 13 months. DS1 had a really bad diaper rash that was a constant fight and I found the only real way to handle it was not diapers at home so we figured out how to deal with it. He potty trained super easily at a little over 2. DS2 just woke up a on Dec 24th and told me he was done with diapers and that was it, no more diapers (night and naps too). DS2 was 27 months when this happened. So both about the same time, but in VERY different ways. I would roll with it. Think of how much money you could save....

@purplelilac: My daughter was going on the potty around 12 months. I think different kids are ready at different points so definitely follow his lead at this point. If he you keep regularly putting him on the potty without any pressure he will get better at it and may basically self potty train himself

I've potty trained both my boys early (20 months and 21 months) both with no desire to actually do it on their own. It's definitely a longer process but one I was/am willing to invest in. If they had been asking and interested I would have definitely gone with it even earlier.

My daughter potty trained herself when she was about 18 months. She was out of diapers during the day before she was 2 and overnight just a few months later.
I’m glad I didn’t take any credit for it because now my son is 30 months old and has accidentally peed in the potty once, and only recently was able to accurately report if he’d pooped or not.

ETA: the only thing we did to help my daughter was bring her to sit at regular times, and read books on the potty. So after breakfast, before snack, before leaving the house, that kind of thing. She started with poop, and she always pooped after breakfast so that happened first and was easiest. I used the gerber cotton trainers for awhile- they have a thick padded crotch so she still gets wet but it doesn’t go everywhere

We did it with DD2 when she was 19.5 months. We had potty trained DD1 at 23 months and it was super easy, but I thought it was just luck and didn’t plan to try the same thing again. However DD2 got such awful diaper rashes that I just wanted her out of diapers. She pretty much trained herself, and would go in the little potty and dump it without us knowing until we heard a flush. We just always did pants down at home, training pants only at naps and bedtime (my mom refused to have her go without training pants at her house and because she was there once a week it dragged the accident stage out for like 3-4 months). Every time she peed or pooped on the potty she got fruit snacks. She had a few small regressions in those first 3-4 months (she got sick a few times) and we reinstituted fruit snacks each time to get her back on track.

My daughter was very interested in potty training at 18 mos. I didn't pressure her, just provided opportunities to go on the potty frequently. She poop trained long before pee training, but didn't fully potty train (daytime) until 3yo. We traveled several times in the 1.5 yr she potty trained & we didn't push, so I believe she could've trained sooner, but a lot of that time it simply was easier to have her still in diapers/pull ups.

The book "Oh Crap Potty Training" says it's possible as early as 18-20 months, I think. Anecdotally, I know 2 girls who learned at 18-20 months, but due to significant reasons - one was moving to a developing country where diapers are $$$$$ and the other was having a baby brother ASAP and mom was an early childhood educator (so, somewhat familiar with the process.)

So definitely rare but possible. I wouldn't hinder the child.

Our daughter was like this. Super interested and very consistent very early. We agreed to put zero pressure on her and at the time had two toddlers, so really weren't that eager to do public restrooms with both, one in diapers and one using the potty. So we didn't actually take away diapers until maybe 26 months? She just used the potty a lot, even most of the time, I'd say, between about 19 and 26 months, but still wore diapers. Finally we went on a road trip and I realized she hadn't gone in her diaper the entire trip, including a 5 hour drive each way. So we just switched to underwear. She had some accidents at first but basically has been trained ever since.

My kiddo was 95% poop trained by 20 months. It was amazing! I put him on the potty as soon as he woke up, after breakfast (poop time), and before bath (poop time). He potty trained really easily at 25 months.

First off I can’t believe I am writing this post. This is my 3rd child and my first two could not have been more different when it came to potty training so it’s a surprise to me that #3 has his own ideas too.
Starting last week my 19-month old has decided he wants to use the potty (Mostly to poop, but he will pee in there sometimes too). He has been telling us when he poops for a while, but now he will shout “go potty!” too. It’s wild.

So now tell me has anyone else experienced this? It seems crazy young to “potty train” but he is also very, very interested. Neither of my girls was ever this self motivated to use the toilet (they potty trained at 2.11 and 3 respectively). I’ll take any advice suggestions this hive can give me. How do I both keep encouraging him but also keep my own expectations really low? Is it even possible for a 1.5 year to do this?
