@BananaPancakes: exactly this for my 3-year old.

admittedly after the completely lack of interest he showed the few times i brought out the blocks during the first 2 years of his life, i keep them in a closet now. maybe he would show interest now, i don't know. anyway the main point being that there's nothing wrong with his gross motor skills.

i think i asked myself the same question in your situation around that age!

@Orchid: We just got a little 8 piece set of Tegu blocks for my 13 month old. At first, he was VERY confused as to why the blocks just stuck together, but now he enjoys breaking them up and throwing each block away (so that I have to go find them all and put them all back together).

@Jass: no worries! i'm a ftm too, but i just am really interested in child development ;) other fine motor activities besides blocks are things like drawing/painting, stickers, puzzles, bead mazes, mr. potato head, taking on/off doll clothes, things with knobs or gears, etc. basically anything that requires precise hand movements. I talked to my lo's daycare teachers recently about her not playing with blocks very often, and they weren't concerned at all since she's busy doing other fine motor activities

Block play is so beneficial, I try to encourage it even though my 22 month old is not very interested. The variety of blocks available is staggering so I experiment with finding the most interesting blocks for my son. I love the Guidecraft blocks that have sparkly water or sand or mirrors built in. I'm excited to get Tegu blocks as well.

My daughter is almost 21 months and just started showing a bit of an interest in blocks, and really what she likes now is only for us to build a tower or other structure, and then she knocks it down ;) I don't worry though because she can stack blocks, she's just more interested in sensory materials, art, and pretend play. she gets more excited about blocks when I incorporate some of her other toys in with them, like cars or dolls.

Block play also isn't gross motor, btw--gross motor is stuff like running, climbing, jumping, etc. Blocks use more fine motor skills and also develop some basic math and physics principles

Kids definitely play favorites with toys. I couldn't (and still can't) tear my son away from his blocks! But he also has zero interest in puzzles and books so that makes some things difficult.

I wouldn't worry too much! Just find something else she likes to get those fine motor skills going.

@Jass: My 3.5 year old boy has almost never shown interest in building blocks. I think his ped asked if he "could" stack 3 blocks on top of each other at one of his well-checks (maybe 2 year?)but I don't think interest in them means anything. Maybe she just finds them as boring as DS. :)

I know it probably sounds a silly question but my 19 months old dd is not at all interested in building blocks and playing with them. We have been on few play dates and similar age kids play with blocks and she doesn't care at all. Should I be concerned about her gross motor skills?
