Thank you everyone for the encouragement. Luckily, tonight was a lot easier. He was placed in his crib, cried for 10 min, slept for 40 min, woke up and cried for 7 min and has now been sleeping for almost an hour!! I think the most important thing I got out of this is CONSISTENCY IS KEY. The 5 min check ins were making him cry harder so hubs and I decided to gradually increase them but to not eliminate them. Hopefully that works. I can't wait to make it through tonight and see how tomorrow goes.

That sucks I'm so sorry! It's so excruciating isn't it? I have heard that for some babies sleep training just doesn't seem to work. However the first night is always the worst, the most crying and the most heart wrenching for parents. Ours cried on and off for 2+ hours. But by night 3 she Slept from 8:30 pm to 7 am without waking. Hang in there a couple more nights. The thing that struck me about reading your summary was 5 min checks. Depending on the baby that can be counterproductive. Some babies do better with more graduated checks, further apart than 5 min. For us I felt like it would make her more upset to do frequent checks so we did total extinction after a few checks. I would also not put baby back in the RNP as part of the process tho I know you were desperate at that point. Besides that hang in there! If it doesn't work now you could try again later! I know, it sucks tho....

I'm sorry that sounds like an awful night :( I totally for CIO and have tried at various points with my DDs but I also believe that CIO isn't a one size fits all and isn't necessarily this magical solution for everyone. Our DD2 is the type of baby who has never tired herself out with crying. In her worst nights of CIO she has cried hysterically for three hours. Weeks into CIO she would cry for an hour every night until after about 3 weeks of trying we pulled the plug. I just don't think she is the type of kid that CIO works for :-/ I hope things get better with your little one but know whatever you do or whatever your LO does, sleep will get better in time and just like other milestones they will sleep through the night and put themselves to sleep at some juncture!

you didn't "mess up," but he may have not learned anything though. So first, I'd ask yourself if you really want to go through with it. Sleep training is so, so hard! If anything, one thing that everyone will likely agree on is that consistency is key, whatever you choose to do.
Once you've decided to continue, have a game plan. And stick to it for at lease two weeks. Again, consistency is so important. Lots of parents have said that checks made their LOs more upset, and I've also read that checks are actually more for the parents than they are for the baby! (Personally I can say that was the case for us- I was all hardcore extinction in theory, but in actuality I couldn't do it and we ended up doing checks!).
Good luck. It was hard for us to do it but it made a world of difference!

I am by no means an expert, but I found that checks made it way worse for both of us. She would cry harder and longer each time we went in. When we didn't go in, she cried for 10 min, and was out the rest of the night. After the first night, she either doesn't cry, or only cries for a minute or two. We've been doing it for about 4 weeks.

Don't worry, you didn't fail! The first night is hard! For me, I asked what was harder - hearing him cry for a few nights or continuing to be exhausted to the point of cracking! (We did CIO for sttn). For me, my mental and physical health was dwindling, so as hard as CIO was, the alternative was harder.

I would agree that it might help to first focus on getting back in the crib. Then falling asleep on his own.
If you're already rocking him to sleep, you're not going to "undo" anything. So might as well continue with the rocking (I know, it probably isn't what you want to hear) until he is comfortable in the crib. THEN you should 100% do CIO to get him to fall asleep on his own in the crib.
Then you can tackle the naps in the swing.

I'm not a pro, just did a lot of reading on sleep and I'm borderline obsessed with the topic. I am normally a "let's just rip off the bandaid and do it all at once" kind of girl. But after talking to my ped about a few topics (sleep included) I've realized that changing only one variable at a time is important. If he's screaming and you changed both rock n play AND rocking him to sleep, it's hard to tell what the bigger issue is. and it can be overwhelming for him.

One thing is for sure - I've never heard anyone say that CIO was easy, but the ones who have stuck to their guns have all said that it was worth it and it was shorter lived than they expected. (Meaning the first couple of nights seem fruitless but suddenly the 3rd, 4th, 5th night, the crying decreases and suddenly it's worked :-) )

Anyway, take my advice with a grain of salt, you know your son best! Good luck and keep us updated :-)

@golizzzard: I am so sorry! Sounds hard, I say take what you can handle in the crying department, you know your LO best! Maybe try to get him.back in crib first then, falling asleep on his own?!
IDK this stuff stinks!

We're trying to get him to fall asleep on his own and in the crib. He had been out of the RnP for two months but with the regression it was the only place he would sleep. And all his naps are in the swing; which is a whole other mess, but we're trying.

I don't think you failed! It's a process. You don't need to get him sleeping in crib, on his own, all in one night.

We decided to take the plunge and sleep train out 5 month old son.

We placed him in his crib at 7pm. The crying started at 7:08pm, and was constant. There were no breaks and we did 5 minute check-ins the whole time. At 8:08pm, I decided to go pick him up because the crying was not letting up and I noticed he was soaking in sweat. I changed his Pjs, put him back in the crib, and he miraculously fell asleep at 8:15pm for 20 minutes. At 8:36pm he woke up and started crying. We continued the 5 minute checks and he fell asleep at 9:45 after over an hour of straight crying. This time he slept for 25 minutes. After this second wake up he cried for another hour straight, that's 3 hour total, and I couldn't take it anymore so we reverted back and put him in the RnP. He fell asleep immediately and only had one wake up, nursed, and woke up this morning at 6:30am. I know we messed up but 3 hours of crying was hard.

Please help. Did I totally mess up by not completing the training last night? Do we try again tonight? Do I wait a few days, a week? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
