We just did a 10-hour road trip to Michigan for my grandfather's funeral last weekend. D is 9 months old. We left at naptime, and he slept for the first 2 hours. He woke up and played pleasantly in the back by himself, then we stopped so he could eat and get a diaper change and a break from the car seat. I kept milk in bags and just ran them under hot water - bags heat up WAY faster than bottles - it took maybe 20 seconds. Back in the car, he did ok but then got kind of fussy so I climbed in the back and entertained him for another 2 hours or so until our next stop. This was a longer one, so Hubs and I could eat dinner. Then we changed him into his pjs, I nursed him in the car, and we put him back in his car seat. He fell asleep (for the night) in the car seat. He woke up a bit once we got to the hotel, but went back down pretty easily w/just his paci and the white noise machine.

We packed toys, his travel sleep sheep, books, and puffs. The books kept him occupied really well, though reading them to him made me a little car sick. We also put the 90s on 9 station on the Sirius, so he had fun watching me dance and sing along to all the goofy 90s tunes, ha ha.

ETA: I brought my manual pump and pumped in the car.

We've always left at nap time or bedtime. It's probably going to go a lot better than you think. 4 hours isn't that long. I didn't really pump on trips. Just nursed when necessary. LO sleeps in a PnP when we're away.

@butterbean: Tommee Tippee makes a travel bottle/food warmer which is great for bottles, especially wide bottles.

@butterbean: If you don't find a thermos, I've also just gone through a drive through and gotten a large cup of hot water. That works pretty well!

I did a 21 hour drive with a 6 month old this summer (ended up 27 hours with all the stops) and agree with the advice already given. We tried to drive at night mostly so she was asleep and we didn't have to stop as many times. When we drove through the day, we stopped every 2 hours for 20 minutes or so, and that really adds up!

@MaisyMay: yea that was my initial thought - to go during his bedtime, but it seems like sister in law will be driving up from NC and spending the night here (instead of driving straight to NY).

@Foodnerd81: i don't think they have a pnp....i love the idea of bringing a thermos with hot water (just gotta find a thermos!)

@MaisyMay: @Foodnerd81: did either of you pump while on your roadtrip?

C is way younger but for our one road trip we left at bedtime- fed her and did the usual routine then put her in the car seat instead if the crib. She fell asleep after about half an hour (she doesn't usually like the car at all). She even stayed asleep when we brought her inside.

Do your cousins have a pnp at their place that they could set up for you? For bottles what if your bring a thermos of hot water that a bottle will fit into to warm?

We did a 7 hour drive when LO was 8 months, and the best advice I have is drive when LO should sleep if at all possible. We made the drive starting at 7 p.m. and LO was awake only 30 minutes of it. Mind you, she wanted to play when we got in at 2 a.m., but the drive was so much easier since she slept.

it looks like we may have to go out of town this weekend to attend a funeral ( ) and i'm a bit nervous taking this roadtrip with our 10 month old LO...and since this is an unexpected trip, i think we are going to stay with my DH's cousins place...

we anticipate the drive will be 4 hours but i know it'll probably be a little bit longer if we factor in the time to stop, feed, change diaper, leg stretch...etc.

i don't even know where to begin in terms of logistics...like how would i warm up bottles to give him? should we bring our pack and play so he can sleep in there?

any tips on how to successfully tackle this 1st roadtrip would be greatly appreciated
