@winniebee: I agree! I gave up on it. If he doesn’t want to sleep I don’t force the issue. Yesterday he had one nap and bedtime was a breeze.

@MsBAM: We are right there with you! My 10 month old took a 2 hour morning nap yesterday after waking for the day earlier than usual (830-1030) and then flat out refused an afternoon nap. Left him in his crib from 2-330 and he did not nap! Only so much you can do. I think he will be on one nap easily in 2 months.

@MsBAM: ugh it’s so frustrating! I guess if it works with your schedule you could try to keep waking him up really early. I gave in since having her on one nap did work better for my schedule with her older sister. He will go to one nap eventually and then this will feel like a blurry, tired, memory.

@Foodnerd81: I’ve tried pretty much everything! Shortening his wake time in the morning doesn’t work. He ends up taking a long morning nap (1-1.5hrs) then refuses the second nap, as you said you LO did too. Today, I accidentally woke him up after 30mins during his morning nap. So he was definitely tired enough for a second nap in the afternoon. It made bedtime so much easier. This is the only thing that has worked so far, so I don’t know if I should keep shortening his morning nap as I hate to wake him, or try switching to a one nap schedule. I feel like he still needs 2 naps but fights the second nap.

@jape14: @MsBAM: this is an identical schedule for my 10 month old. If he needs a third nap I will throw a cat nap in there but he’s basically on two naps and will stay on that until after 1/14 months!

So first of all, both my kids had a sleep regression right in the 9-10 month period, then again at around 12-13 months. So if he's fighting PM naps, that could be associated with it.

Definitely agree its way too young to move to 1 nap right now. Also, the 2-3-4 never worked for my kids - we did more like 2.5/2.5/3.

So they would be up around 7-730am, and first nap would be at 10am. Then they would get up around 1130am-12pm.

Second nap would be 230pm-4pmish (or whenever they woke up, but we'd wake them by 430pm).

Then bedtime was 730pm.

Neither child transitioned to 1 nap until around 14 months. The transition period itself took a long time - like 6 weeks maybe - so that will begin right around 1 year old, at the earliest.

The first nap of the day is the one you want to nail. They usually go down for it the easiest, they want to sleep well for it, and it will set you up for success the rest of the day. Don't be out and about and then be late for that nap - get it on time and try to make it happen at home in the crib as much as possible.

One thing that always ruined the PM nap with my kids was poop. So I'd try to get the kids to run around after lunch and get a poop in before nap.

Also, I believe in nap time whether they are sleeping or not. If you wake up 30 minutes into nap time, guess what? Its still nap time. I may have to go in and change a diaper, do a check, make sure they're not sick, whatever, but I still make them stay in their crib, in a dark room, for at least 90 minutes. It sucks if they are awake and yelling, but I believe in reinforcing that its rest time. Usually this helps our regressions ride out faster because once that developmental phase is over, they go back to sleeping full length naps because that's what their bodies are used to.

@MsBAM: yeah, same. I can't quite remember how we handled that... sometimes we tried putting him down for the 2nd nap regardless, or cutting the nap off my 4pm, but really.... he had a really late bedtime, like 9pm, for awhile :-/
It worked for us though because we have in-home care, I don't have to drop off for daycare.

Every baby is different. My oldest went to 1 nap at 14 months. My second went to 1 nap at 18 months. My third only takes once good nap a day and he is 10 months. Often just a cat nap in the morning and then a longer one in the afternoon. We were just on vacation and he only would take one nap a day. Bedtime was early, but he was fine. I can see him being solidly on one nap by 12 months.

Right now I aim for 2-3-4 schedule, but it's often 2.5-3.5-4. Bed time is always no later than 8. He often sleeps 8-630 or so. Nap 1 is 9-945 and then nap 2 like 115-330, bedtime 8.

@DesertDreams88: That’s how my LO is. Won’t sleep prior to 3hrs wake time, and for second nap won’t sleep until he has 4 hours wake time. That schedule had been working out very well. The last few weeks he absolutely fights that last nap and by the time he’s ready for sleep it’s way too late and screws up bedtime. Did you experience this? I’m wondering if him fighting his second nap is part of the 10month sleep regression. We can’t keep going on like this. Looks like I have to cut the nap, and make bedtime earlier? I know if I do that, he’ll be up after half hour of putting him to bed 🤷🏻‍♀️

At that age we did 3-3-4. My kid wasn't tired after just 2 hours in the morning. Then again, he didn't wake up until 7am and it was bright sunlight.

I'd try to go back to 2-3-4 too, and/or shorten a nap. At 10 months I also agree that it may be too soon to drop to 1 nap.

Agree with shortening awake time in the morning.

If it helps, I remember DD1 going through a nap-fighting stage around that time but she adjusted after a couple weeks and started napping even better.

I think she started sometimes dropping the 2nd nap around 14 months.

I think the awake time between the first and second naps is too long - he may be fighting that nap bc he is overtired. I would probably do first nap at 9:30 then if awake by 11, second nap by 2:30 at the latest, then that nap should end by 4 anyway.

ETA: my 9 month old's schedule generally looks like:
6am - awake
8:15-10am - nap 1
1:30-2:45pm - nap 2
6:45/7 - bedtime

I agree that it’s way too early to go to one nap. I would try moving both naps forward - the 10am one ideally to 9 (maybe start by going to 9:30) and keeping it to one hour, and then the moving the second nap up to 1 or 1:30, and not letting him sleep past 4, for a 7:30 bedtime.

You could try shortening the morning nap, so he can have a little more wake time before the afternoon nap. But of course you run the risk that you are shortening the only nap he will take that day...

My younger daughter did drop the second nap before one. I tried to fight it but she would take a good morning nap and just refuse the afternoon one. She did much better once we adjusted to the one afternoon nap schedule.

Hi all,

My 10mo is currently on two naps a day. I’ve been following a 3/4/4 schedule and it has been working well except as of recently, the second nap has been more difficult. Usually LO has a morning and afternoon nap.

Example schedule:

Wake up: 7:00am

Nap 1: 10:00 (I’ve been pushing it to 3.25 to 3.5 hrs wake time and nap 1 is usually 1-1.5hrs).

Awake 1130ish

Nap 2: I attempt nap at 315-330 and usually he fights it and wants to stay awake and play. He doesn’t end up asleep till after 4 and sleeps about half hour. This effects bedtime bc it seems he needs at least 4 hours awake after nap 2 and he’ll wake up between 430-5 from nap 2.

What do I do so bedtime isn’t so late since nap 2 ends up so late? Drop nap 2 and stretch wake time in the morning? If I drop nap 2 and opt for an earlier bedtime he’ll be way too tired by the time dinner rolls around.
