I would buy a new crib for sure!! If your toddler is sleeping well in the crib then don’t mess with it!! That’s the last thing you will want to deal with when you have a newborn. We bought a second crib (used on kijiji) for my second baby and then sold it soon as we were ready for what we paid for it.

I agree with 2 cribs. Mine are 2.5 years apart and DD1 never made any moves to climb out of her crib so we kept her in it even though she was potty trained right at 2. We transitioned her crib to toddler bed with rail a few months after DD2 was born so she could use the potty. DD2 was in a packnplay with us for a few months then we found a free crib on craigslist and she's still in it. I also obsessed about this but what we did worked out great.

Second crib! Or maybe wait to purchase depending on how/where baby will sleep
We have our three year old still in a crib. Her baby bro arrived and we had him in an arms reach co sleeper. And then we bought a babyletto mini crib. We figure that his sister will be out of the crib and we’ll transition that to a toddler bed. Baby can stay in mini crib up until a year. At that point we will reassess our needs. There is a huge demand for mini cribs since we live in an urban area so I’ll just sell it when the time comes.
dont mess with a happily sleeping toddler before BIG changes are about to happen!!!

I had Irish twins and didn't need a second crib.

The youngest always stayed next to me in a bassinet/cosleeper until four months. Mine have all climbed out of the crib pretty early.

Similar age gap (#2 born 3 weeks before #1’s 2nd bday) and we transitioned to a toddler bed at 21 months old. Granted #1 had always been an awful sleeper, we hadn’t nothing to lose. The toddler bed actually helped with naps and bedtime. We did it 2 months before baby got here so we had plenty of time to change our minds if it wasn’t working.

My youngest is now older than when we transitioned #1 and I cannot imagine putting him in toddler bed (but he’s still a baby in my head) 😂

Mine are 19 months apart and we did two cribs for about 8 months. They share a room and it felt like the best way to do it. LO2 was in a mini crib until resently. I am not sure what our next step is... their room is so tinny.

we got a second mini crib so that I didn't have to worry about it. My babies never sleep in the crib to start, but I am always optimistic and like to try for naps, etc. We have a side-car cosleeper thing for early on.

Mini cribs are awesome options- cheaper, don't take up a lot of space. I don't have particularly tall children, but the size has never been an issue for us.

we transitioned my DD1 22months, 2 months before DD2 was born. i was super nervous about it and went back and forth on crib vs twin bed for a long time. turned out to be the easiest transition ever. She never tries to get out of bed. Her sleep has stayed exactly the same. We got her the Ikea daybed with the bedrail. I wonder if she still feels 'secure' since its enclosed on 3 sides?

We had a 20 month age gap between our two and decided to have 2 cribs. My first didn't try to climb out of his crib so we only transitioned him to a toddler bed after he turned 3.

Transitioned our 19 month old to a big twin bed and have zero regrets. Baby came when she turned 22 months. We had one rough day for a nap and that was it. So if it was me I would say just go with a regular bed or toddler bed, but if your kid was younger i’d Keep the crib and get a second or put the new baby in a pack and play.

A concern I would have with not buying a second crib is that your current kid would be jealous or sad/mad that her bed is basically being stolen by the baby if you wait until the baby is born. Don’t know how valid of a concern that is, but maybe something to think about.

Team 2 cribs!
A) I didn’t want to rush a transition if she wasn’t totally ready
B) if you end up moving them close to baby being born, they already have such an adjustment with a baby. You don’t need to start playing with sleeping arrangement as well.
C) you can buy new and sell, or buy used and still sell. Cribs are so easy to get cheap.

Dd1 was 17 months when dd2 was born so we bought a second crib.
Dd1 was 3.5 when dd3 was born, so we converted her toddler bed back to the crib and got her a queen bed. It worked well for everyone. Dd2 stayed in a crib until she was 3. She started climbing out so that’s when we got her a bed.

We bought a second crib! Totally wasn’t interested in switching DS early- he loved his crib. Then eventually we switched him but hiscrib converted to a little toddler bed which was a super smooth transition, so I’m really glad we had a second crib. He stayed in the toddler bed for quite a few months.

Now we are having baby 3 and DD will stay in her crib and DS2 will have DS1’s old crib. So all works out!

@Ms. RV: We are! But I’m not sure how long. #1 was in our room for almost 3 months, but it just depends on what kind of sleeper #2 is.
@justjules: I can see #1 being in the crib until around 3 as well. She’s almost 17 months and we’re not even at the lowest setting, she’s never tried to get out of her crib. She genuinely enjoys being in there.

@erinbaderin: That sounds like the best option. There are so many nice barely used cribs around here. I could easily pick one up.
That way when we do transition #1 we’ll most likely just convert her crib into a toddler bed. She really does love it... lol.

We did two cribs - B was 26 months when W was born and I’d planned to transition him into a toddler bed but we tried for a few naps and he just wasn’t ready. He ended up being in the crib for another 6 months after W was born. We bought a used crib on kijiji, used it for a few months until everybody was ready for the transition, and then put the nice crib into W’s room.

I agree with @birdofafeather:. I'd just let it simmer and keep an eye on it. My DD was out of her crib fairly early because she was climbing out of it, even with a sleep sack on. It simply wasn't safe to keep her in it. She was right around 2. That being said, your DD might not be a stunt double and you may decide you want to keep things "normal" for her as long as possible. Can you just keep baby #2 in a bassinet for a while to buy you some time to decide?

Our transition to a bed was not difficult at all, but I know it is for many. You may decide when baby is ready to move from bassinet to crib might be a good time to "promote" big sister and get her a big sister bed.

@pinkb: I’m thinking 2 Is the way to go, even though we will have #2 in our room, who knows how long it’ll be. #1 was a great sleeper and moved to her crib relatively quickly too.

And the idea of transitioning a toddler into a toddler bed and baby into a crib at the same time sounds like a nightmare! Lol.

We did 2 cribs. DD was 27 months old when DS was as born. And she stayed in her crib until just after she turned 3. DS was only in our room for a week or so in a pack play. No regrets DD slept really well and I don't want to mess with it. Transition was when she initiated she wanted a big girl bed. And she never tried to climb out so we never had an issue.

I wouldn’t transition the toddler but I would wait on getting another crib for the baby right now. We keep our newborns/infants in room for a bit so I’d use the bassinet for a while and see how the toddler does. When I’m ready to move the baby into its own room, I’d assess the crib at that point. DD1 transitioned on her own a little after 2 and it was a nightmare. DD2 is 2.5, moved easily to a twin bunk with DD1, but also happily slept in her crib last night (DD3 is 1 month old and in our room).

Hi all, I’m very newly pregnant with my second babe due 2 weeks after #1 turns 2 years old.
We’ve started thinking about sleeping arrangements, the original plan to transition #1 to a toddler bed to free up the crib for #2, but now I’m thinking that might not be the best idea.
#1 loooooooves her sleep and her bed. I’m apprehensive about taking that away, as well as taking a method of containing her away! Plus, she’ll JUST be 2, seems so little to me.

What did you all do? 2 cribs or early transition? Regrets? Experiences?
Thanks!
