We don't have this situation but recently all stayed in one bedroom at my mom's house for over a week and it worked out great! DH was only there on the weekends but bedtime was easier than when he is not home because I was able to get them down at the same time. Our older DS slept sooo much better than at home even though he was just in the pnp. The younger one is only 10 weeks and mostly slept like crap but never woke up his brother. At home he normally wakes at least once a night nut he sttn every night except one. Makes me wonder if he just likes having someone in the room.

we are six in a two bedroom.
3.5 month in bassinet, 20 month in toddler bed with us in our king bed. 4 year old in a full and our aunt in a twin in the second bedroom. the second bedroom has a (full/twin bunk). Eventually, we'll set up the crib when the middle kid turns 2 and move him into the second room with his older brother in the full or move the 4 year old to the twin bunk and have the 2 year old with our aunt in the full. It's tight but it works for everyone and no one complains and everyone sleeps alright.

@AprilFool: for us, basically I just waited until the baby slept 11 hrs straight consistently. for his older brother, that was around 3 months old. for baby it was 6 months. :)
I know that's not the situation for everyone, but it was the simplest way I knew how! :)

eta: with regard to falling asleep at night, waking in the mornings, etc, I think it's gone smoothly largely in part of the fact that they are both in cribs.

@luckypenny: @tysonja: How does your older LO handle the younger LO's night wake ups? We are going to be doing the same thing when LO #2 comes along so just curious as to how it works.

We'll be in a 2/2 most likely if we have another. We still have LO in our master so... ? I might have everyone in our room- otherwise LO1 will be in her room and LO2 will be in ours. I can see us having both in our room though- I like having a room open for play. We'll see!

I feel I should point out that this isn't happening in the near future, in case I'm giving anyone ideas :)

But yeah, in general, I'm not opposed to kids sharing a room, I'm just really scared of messing up their sleep, when the time comes. But hey, maybe the second baby will be one of those magical sleeps all the time babies :)

Baby slept in our room until about 8 months. It took a week or two for them to stop waking each other up all night but they seem to really like it. When the baby would wake he would usually come to our room for the rest of the night. Honestly the hardest part is putting them to bed- we need to stagger otherwise they keep each other up. (They are 3 and 16 months).

We have one child, and a two bedroom place. DD just turned a year, and we are still bed sharing. I plan to do the same with the next kiddo, unless s/he absolutely hates it, and desires space, early on. This will result in DD1 having her own sleeping space, for a while.

My sister and I voluntarily shared a room until we were 8 and 5, despite additional bedrooms in our home. We loved being roomies. I have zero qualms with my kids sharing a room, and actually really prefer a cozy house/big yard set-up, anyway.

We aren't in this situation, but live in an area where it's super common. People typically either share the room with their child or their kids share from the start. People just adjust.

We are probably going to have 2 in a 2 bedroom. Right now I think we would just keep the baby in our room until s/he is sleeping a little bit better. No idea how old DS will be. He is 2 now so I am guessing around 4. I hated having DS in our room because he was so noisy but now that I know white noise machines exist I think we will be ok!

@Foodnerd81: I would think 3 would be young enough to be okay sharing a room! You might want to keep the baby in your room until they are sleeping a little better (not eating every 2 hours), but after that, I would think you'd be able to bunk 'em together! :D

I'm not in this situation, but my SIL is! She has the older in his own room and the youngest sharing their room at the moment. I think they intend to keep that arrangement until they move to a bigger place.

My parents also were in this situation for a while and they kept the baby in their room for a little bit, but then moved both kids into a room together.

I think age gap might play a role in this. For my SIL, the age difference is quite large (6 years), so the oldest has had his own room for a LONG time. It would probably be really hard on him if he had to start sharing with his baby sister. For my parents, my brother and I were only 16 months apart, so I think it was a lot easier for them to put us together.

If you have/had two kids in a two bedroom apartment, what were the sleeping arrangements like? Did you have the younger baby in your room longer than the older one was? When did they start sharing a room?

We are in a 2 bed now, hopefully we will be in a place to move to a 3 bed by the time we have another baby, but we could make do for a while if needed. I figure we'd probably keep the baby in our room longer to avoid sleep disruptions. Curious how other people do it.

My parents always planned for some of their kids to share a room growing up, but we all fought too much and they ended up building an addition on the house instead!
