I wouldn't say that we have a bedtime "routine," but we try to do things to differentiate daytime from night time, and I think that helps. For example, we only swaddle at night, only use white noise at night, only try to enforce general quiet at night, and only have darkness at night. During the day, LO will nap in the carseat if we go somewhere (like pickup and dropoff for daycare for my older son), and he'll take short naps here and there at other times, but it's always in the context of light and noise and a generally sleep-unfriendly environment. Then, when it's time for bed at night, we try to make the environment as sleep-friendly as possible. Our nurse practitioner/lactation consultant is big on this, and urged us to start making the distinction between daytime sleep conditions and nighttime sleep conditions as early as possible. I think that has helped.
On the other hand, we did the same thing with my older son, and he never slept more than 3 hours at a time till he was 7 months old, so a lot of it depends on the kid.
I will say that we've seen a big change in LO's sleep in the last week or so- my LO is almost 12 weeks, and up until last week I was pretty happy if we got a 4 hour chunk of sleep from him at night, and he's been consistently sleeping 5-6 hours before his first waking the last few nights, so part of it may also be age!

I don't think you can go "wrong" here. We notice at about 2.5 months that F had gone from waking up & needing us to put him back to bed at 9pm, to us having to wake him up at 9 to put him in jammies for the night. We naturally found his "bedtime" was around 7ish, so we started a bath time, book, boob, routine then. He still uses that same basic routine at 15 months. It never did make him sleep longer stretches, but he falls asleep like a champ!

Also, tell people (politely) to back the eff off about sleep!! It took me forever to get up the courage to ask people to stop asking us about sleep. It was driving me batty! I felt okay about his sleep, F was happy, but everyone asking all the time made me feel like I was doing it "wrong". Do whatever works, mama!

We picked bedtime based on when we wanted to go to bed. So when she was a few weeks old, we started our routine before her 10pm feeding, even though she would still be up at 1 to eat again. She started giving us longer stretches after a while and we have inched her bedtime up. I think nighttime rituals help them learn to STTN.

We started doing a bedtime routine when she started having a 5-6 hour stretch at beginning of her nighttime sleep. I think that was about 5 weeks for us and she was going to bed around 9pm. Our routine is just pjs, books and nurse. Now at 4 months she goes to sleep around anywhere between 7-8, depending on when her last nap ended. I'd keep doing a routine if I were you!

Just checking in as we're in the same boat. LO is 8 weeks today and we're doing the same, "feed when hungry, put down when tired" shtick. I feel like we should have a routine, but I'm not quite sure where to start! Let me know if you implement anything and how it goes! I know for a fact bathtime won't be a part of it anytime soon, she allllways gets way too worked up during the getting out part!

I think y'all are right, I just need to stick with a routine and it will probably be beneficial to me and him in the end. Thanks for the advice! :)

My daughter is 12 weeks old and we've been setting a bedtime routine from the very beginning. Unfortunately, I haven't seen much a difference in her sleep but feels beneficial to me to wind down the day.

Another downside is that her falling-asleep-for-the-"night" time is still around 10pm. That means even if I try to give her a bath and nursing session at 7:30pm, she will fuss or be wide away for a few hours before she even thinks about sleeping.

We started a routine around that age and it actually helped her sleep longer, so don't get discouraged! You might as well pick whatever time works for you, and as you go forward, tweak it as needed. LO used to go to bed at 8, but over the last 4 months has shoved her bedtime back to 7, if not 6:30 most nights.

6:30 (6:15 if really tired) - bathtime
6:45 (or 6:30) - sleep sack + bottle
6:45- 7pm - down for sleep

@Muggle Born: we just picked a time arbitrarily and adjusted as he got older and slept longer stretches! Sounds totally normal to me, tell people to buzz off :)

So I'm no expert, but this is what we've been trying to do with our 6 week old:

6pm - feed
7:30 - bath
8:00 - swaddle, feed, put in pack n play in our room
10/10:30ish - dream feed

I admit that right now I nurse to sleep. I'm hoping after 8 weeks to work on putting down while drowsy. Right now he's just not having it, I think he's too young.

Routine is good. Put him in pj's for the night, do bath and night time rituals. Sure, he'll wake up, but doing the routine things will help get him accustomed to nighttime activities and maybe even help him sleep better.

Definitely don't feel discouraged!! Your little guy is so young still. I think you can do it either way--either pick a bedtime and go with that, or see if there's a time that he naturally gives you longer stretches. You can try starting a bedtime routine and who knows, maybe that will help him start to differentiate day and night and he will start sleeping longer!

We picked LO's bedtime based on that fact that he fell asleep at 6:30 once and slept til midnight at about 7/8 weeks. So his bedtime was around 630/7 for a while.

My LO is 9 weeks old, and continues to sleep for about 2-3 hours at a time, day and night. We don't really have a nighttime routine and I'm so confused about how to start one, because right now our schedule is so variable - we just nurse when he's hungry and he sleeps when he is sleepy.

I could do a bedtime routine at 6pm or 8pm or 10pm or anytime in between, but the thing is, he's just going to sleep 2 or maybe 3 hours whenever we do that routine, just like any other time. It's not really "bedtime," you know what I mean? Will he eventually start sleeping longer, or should I wait to start the bedtime routine when he does begin to sleep longer? Since all his naps are about the same length, should I just pick what time I want for his routine and "bedtime" to start?

I feel like there's something really obvious that I'm not doing right. I'm feeling so discouraged, especially because everyone keeps asking if he's sleeping through the night yet. Thanks in advance!
