At 12 months he was forced to go to one nap at daycare when he transitioned rooms. He still took 2 naps on the weekends for a month or two then we finally got him on the same schedule as daycare.

I'd say it was before 12 months that she would start fighting the second nap. She's not the best napper in the world to begin with, so I just went with it in hopes that the one nap would be longer than 40 min. Now at 16 mo she's finally at the point where her typical nap may last around 1.5 hrs.

it took about a month to transition (months 17-18).

Round around 12 months. It was a pretty easy transition. We didn't force it, it definitely happened naturally.

13-14 months old or so. It was a bit tough for awhile until we figured it out. Now, he stays up from his morning wakeup until about 12-1pm. After that, he naps. He's usually up about 4-5 hours before bedtime which is perfect timing. We've taken to scheduling events from before 12:30pm and after his nap time on the weekends.

Following...LO has been taking very long morning naps but shorter afternoon naps. We're still not sure if she is in the midst of the transition.

@shopaholic: I would always try anything to make that second nap happen (nap in stroller, rock to sleep, nap in carrier, car ride, etc...) even if it's only 30 minutes or so- enough to get her until bedtime at a normal hour. Also, my LO also got cranky in the mornings and it was hard to keep her up long enough to get to a normal 1 nap naptime, but going outside/getting out always helped, as well as snacks. I think most babies start taking longer naps once they transition to 1 nap, so that might help too.

Somewhere around 12 months we stopped being able to do 2 naps on the weekend. At 15 months she only does one nap 90% of the weekends (random days she needs 2), but she's still doing 2 at daycare. Daycare just brought up that she thinks L is ready for 1 nap at daycare. So, probably another month or two before she's exclusively on a one-nap schedule.

wow! Most of your LOs transistioned a lot earlier than the 15-18 months or 18-24 months I'd been reading about! I guess it's possible then that she is getting there?

I tried the earlier bedtime last night, but it translated into earlier wake-up! :bummed: Her nap(s) is already just barely over 1 hour, so I'm scared to shorten it AND not get a 2nd nap. But I will try 45 min. morning nap today and PRAY for a 2nd nap.

12.5 months she was solidly on 1 nap, but she went down easily for her morning nap so I had the same confusion you did. I had to really change my mindset about mornings and get her out and about first thing. It's hard at first but it gets better! Shortening her morning nap didn't work for us FWIW. That's why I fought the transition so hard! But now it really is better!

We pushed charlie to one nap at 15 months. He got more sleep that way. The transition took a month but it wasn't too bad. He was a very early riser (5-5:30am) so he had to stay awake a very long time before his nap. But once they're on one nap their sleep generally improves and adjusts and you get one long nap.

We tried to transition Olive at 16 months and she wasn't ready. She did it at 17 months in daycare where she was busier and it was easier to stay up.

I would try shortening the morning nap like mrs. yoyo said.

M started the 1 nap transition around 11 months, and was fully on 1 nap by 13ish months. She started fighting the afternoon nap a ton, but still went down fine for morning nap. What I did for awhile was limiting the morning nap to 30-45 minutes only, so she would be tired enough to take an afternoon nap. When that stopped working (she wasn't really getting tired for morning nap anymore, and even if she did only nap for 45 minutes she would still fight afternoon nap), we just went to 1 nap. It probably helped a little that she started at daycare at 11 months and would ONLY take 1 nap there no matter what our provider tried. I don't really think 14 months is too early for 1 nap, but I would try to keep doing 2 for as long as you can. I'd try all the things @hilsy85 suggested. DEF early bedtime if she skips 2nd nap and try stroller/ergo for 2nd nap.

DS1 started fighting his afternoon nap at 12 months. What worked for us for awhile was keeping the morning nap shorter than it had been. We started cutting him off at an hour, then 45 minutes. Then he was tired enough to sleep in the afternoon. When he started fighting the afternoon nap again, we went cold turkey to one nap at 15 months.

Both kids were on one nap by 14 months. The transition took about a month and was a nightmare. I try to do a really engaging activity in the morning and give extra snacks to get them to a later nap time.

LO dropped his right around 15.5 months. He would take his morning nap fine but fought his afternoon nap. It took about 1-1.5 months to really get settled in his new routine. He still can't go more than like 5, 5.5 hours in the morning before his nap, so instead of the typical 1pm nap, he naps at 11:30. He also only naps for about 1.5 hours, but generally wakes up happy so I go with it. Maybe try pushing it back little by little? Or let her nap when she's tired, but then do a really early bedtime--8-9 hours is waaay too long for her to be up! If she only takes the morning nap I would for sure put her to bed early that night.

That being said, I would also keep trying the 2nd nap for a while longer(maybe a stroller nap or ergo nap)--she seems really young to drop to 1 nap.

How old was your LO(s) when he/she transitioned to 1 nap? And how long did the transition take?

K has been fighting her 2nd nap most days for the past 2 weeks. She is almost 14 months. But she gets fussy and whiny after 3 hours on schedule. Her first nap is still pretty short 1hr - 1hr 20 min. She get really fussy if I try to push back the morning nap. So as of late she has been staying up 6-8hrs from her morning nap till bedtime. Yesterday she was up for over 9 hours before bedtime because of an early wake-up.

It seems like she still NEEDS 2 naps, but I don't know how to get her to sleep for the 2nd one? I keep reading toddlers drop the morning nap, so I'm not sure what to do. She's also teething and ends up chewing up her crib during 2nd nap time.

Does this sound like she's ready for 1 nap or still needs 2?
