We did not need a double stroller since we mostly drive everywhere. We do have a double jogging stroller with a fixed front wheel so I would use that when I was in a pinch, but it's definitely not for every day use. And that's only when my husband is away and I need to walk the dog with both kids and the weather doesn't permit us to use the wagon. When LO2 was younger, I would just wear her. What we do have in the summer for going to the park is a wagon. They love being able to climb in and out of the wagon as they please. We use the wagon when we go on excursions like the zoo, apple picking, etc, too.

i don't think it's very necessary, especially in the burbs. even if they stroller nap, how often will you be out and about all day with two little ones? you could still get the baby used to napping while babywearing.

we did have a double stroller in the city, but that's different. even then, usually one still wanted to walk/be carried and i just used the empty seat for pushing grocery bags or our necessities! and i do have one now too (my area is still city-ish somewhat and suburb-ish a little too), but mainly for jogging since there's no other way i'd get exercise in when i have two kids with me at home.

It really depends. I'm a big walker especially when I feel like I need to get out of the house to clear my mind with two LO's. DD was content being worn so I could have had her in the carrier at all times and just pushed DS in the stroller (he was 3 when I had her but his legs would still get tired if we walked a long way or if he needed a nap I would put him in the stroller). But that got bulky and uncomfortable after awhile.

Also, by the time DD was 9 months - I really wanted to start running again so a double running stroller was necessary.

I bought a used Baby Jogger City double and used it 2 times - then sold it (bought and sold on CL)

I found that I wore DD a lot in the beginning - DS was 2.5 when DD came along.

A few times when DS didn't want to walk he would sit on the foot area of the city mini single we had.

I hope not! Mine will be the same amount apart as yours, and I'm hoping to avoid buying yet another stroller.

I'm planning to baby wear #2 a lot more now that I have an Ergo (didn't get one until #1 was almost a year last time) and hopefully if we are doing anything that really needs a stroller, I'll have another person with me so I can just take two singles.

When I found out I was pregnant with #2, I started having C walk more at the zoo, so we don't even need a stroller at the zoo anymore. I'm also looking at getting one of these, but need to figure out if it will fit one of our strollers: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AQLGO2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=27ZEVLGN7XPTX&coliid=I23Q0DTPH3YJJZ

@locavore_mama: We use our double stroller a lot! It really depends on the type of kids you have I think. DD still likes being strolled around, and DS was never a huge fan of being in baby carriers, but can lounge around forever in the stroller. They really like sitting side by side.

I say wait til your baby comes to decide. You can baby carry for the first couple months when he/she is still a newborn and push your older one in a single stroller until you figure it out. :)

I say I can't live without mine, but only because I walk a lot, and neither can walk (we live in a weird city/suburbia hybrid). I think that if one was older and the other a baby, you could totally get away with a single stroller.

I don't think we'' need one in the future unless future LOs 2 & 3 happen to be back to back.

We only use DS' stroller 1-2? a month during the winter if we happen to make it to the mall. He sits in carts in all the other places... and LOVEs walking around by himself alreayd (and he's only 13 months) so i can't imagine he'll be a happy stroller toddler in the future.

we'll probably invest in a good single stroller (the graco set we had we're giving to my parents as a spare) and a good umbrella single as well for future babes

@locavore_mama: for us, yes, sort of haha. DS was only 15 months old when DD was born, and does his own thing when walking. Haha. I used a carrier a lot early on when DD was born and the first few months. But even now, when I want to get out, just the 3 of us, the stroller is so handy! I would have a harder time chasing DS while pushing a stroller.

My only thought is what happens if your toddler wants to run off or something - you might want to secure option of a second seat for the older child.

If it is at all possible to buy it used for cheap or even to borrow from someone local who has older kids now, I would try for that.

With #2 on the way, I don't plan on buying a double stroller. I figure I can Ergo baby while toddler sits in shopping cart or stroller when we're out. LO usually walks and only uses the stroller if he needs a nap right now.

I think in the 'burbs you can live without one since generally there is more driving than walking. When DH and I are together we actually prefer taking two single strollers over the double. (But we live in the city and I have to take the two kiddos by myself a lot and therefore I do need a double stroller because my back starts hurting if I have to babywear and push the older one for more than a short bit).

ETA: My answer is based off of having spent a month in the 'burbs with my in-laws.

when we have 2, I am buying one.
We travel a LOT so, for us it will be necessary. I don't even see myself using it all all at home. If we go on walks in our neighborhood, LO #1 can walk or bike or hold my hand. Or I can babywear.
But, on vacations when we go to zoos, and shopping, and all that jazz, we will need to keep both kiddos contained.

My first wasn't a fan of baby wearing - I'm hoping that getting an Ergo for #2 (due in March about 21 months apart) might help. My plan is to keep both our single strollers (travel system/umbrella) as well as add one double. I live outside the city and walk to get the mail everyday but its on a busy road so we take the stroller and then walk to the park where DS can play and then get back into the stroller for the walk home. With 2 kids I want to have my bases covered. My double stroller budget is $300 or less and considering we don't need much else this time I'm ok with it. Even if its only used once a week for a year that's ok.

I don't think it's a necessity! We aren't baby wearers so we have several double stroller options, but usually Wagon Jr. likes to stand (but won't walk for long distances when he sees the baby riding in the stroller) so we have a buggyboard type thing on our stroller.

The only time I think it's an absolute necessity is for the airport if you don't babywear. When you've got so many other things to juggle it's very nice to have both kids buckled in and sitting comfortably (and eating a snack, usually!) when you're checking in, checking baggage, waiting in line for security, etc. But you could always borrow one for trips if you have to fly.

Oh, if you're going to a big mall you could always get one of those rental ones that look like firetrucks. I always regret unpacking the stroller from the car for quick trips when I see those!

They want to walk when they're young, but then they realize they can just sit when it's no longer a novelty. Charlie always wants to sit while olive wants to walk.

I don't think it's a day to day necessity, but I would still get one for trips to the zoo, amusement park, etc. a double stroller also lets them both nap when you're out and about all day.

But get one used since you won't use it often.

I'm on the fence. I wanted to get a Joovy Caboose (sit n stand style) but DH nixed it. There are definitely times when I could have really used it. It depends on your kids. My DD is old enough to walk, but she gets tired and wants to fight my DS for the stroller. At this point I don't want to buy one since she's practically 5 but if I had to do it again, I would have vetoed my DH and gotten it. I see them on Craigslist all the time (presumably because some people buy them and then find them to be useless).

I don't forsee us ever getting a double. Probably the most I'd ever do is get the running board for our City Mini so C can stand and ride on it.

If not that, then I'd probably let C ride and one of us wear the baby.

We don't have a double stroller and we haven't even missed having one. I can't really think of a time where we would have used it. The girls are 21 months apart and our usual plan was to baby wear one and use the stroller for the other.

I don't have a second but I LOVE the sit and stand strollers. They allow the older kid to get on if they get tired. Inevitably at disneyland or the zoo, they will and I don't want to carry a 5 year old.

We also baby wear so that may help.
