Old Navy Maternity (online), Macy's clearance, and a giant consignment sale I stumbled on in my city when I was 5 months seriously saved me.

Sometimes you don't need maternity specific clothes. I find anything stretchy is basically good for maternity, even if you need one size up. I also got a belly band on ebay for pretty cheap. It allows me to continue wearing my normal jeans and tops so I think it was totally worth it. Ebay in general has been a good place to buy cheap maternity wear.

My maternity clothes are almost all from Old Navy. I stocked up on 4 short sleeve t shirts, and 3 tanks early on and have pretty much only worn those. I did 2 long sleeve shirts to help with the cold weather too. I wore boyfriend style cardigans in past winter seasons and so I just wore those over my t shirts I bought. I have only bought 2 pairs if maternity jeans...I basically wore out the old pair (like they fell apart) and then bought my current pair. I think all my t shirts were less than $10 because of big sales at Old Navy (like 30% off combined with a buy 2 shirts get them cheaper deal).

@Smurfette: Unfortunately, honestly the styles don't work layered well. It's not a huge deal right now, because I don't need to dress nice or anything, but all my clothes in general are very fitted. I'll at least need tops I can put stuff over.

@redsmarties: I'm in TN, and around a 4-6? I appreciate the offer. :)

I think with these tips I can make a good go of at least coming up with some basics I'll need, and what is less important. Thanks!

Also, DH asked the other day "didn't you buy a bunch of maternity stuff before?" He meant when I bought some stuff back during my first pregnancy. Firstly, I got some maternity jeans (hopefully all I'll need), but the rest was stuff to get me through early pregnancy, like some looser shirts. And more importantly, that was in MAY. So I got a bunch of sleeveless stuff and that sort of thing, to get me through what was supposed to be a very hot early pregnancy. This is January. I don't think the sleeveless stuff will cut it now!

@Torchwood: I will be pregnant during different seasons this time, but I found some great deals on eBay. Jeans are probably among the more expensive stuff you will buy, but I was able to fine one pair of ON jeans on eBay for a couple of bucks.

For basic tees, I got the plain ON ones for a couple of bucks in the next size.

Check JCPenney and Kohls clearance - I got some work pants for $8 and a bunch of inexpensive shirts. Also, as far as DH is concerned break down the cost per day worn (aka you will wear items 1-2 times per week x 30 weeks) and maybe he will feel better about it?

ETA: not to mention you will likely wear them for 2 or so months pp too.

Lots of good advice! Also, depending on your body type and how/where you gain, you may be able to get by with regular clothes that are just a size or two up. Non maternity knit dresses worked well for me.

Echoing what others have said, keep checking websites like Old Navy, Gap and Target for sales. Last week I got bunch of stuff from Gap when everything was 40% off the already reduced sale prices. Sign up for the email alerts if you can stand it.

The Target clearance rack is good but obv you have to check often because they run out of sizes. I recently got a nice work dress for $17.

Also H&M has some cheap stuff especially if they are having a sale. I got my one and only pair of maternity jeans there during a post-christmas sale, for like $12.

I was at my largest in the heat of the summer and I found that I didn't even need real 'maternity' clothes until amost my 3rd trimester, so I was able to get away with very little. It also helped that my Mom was crazy about buying me nice work clothes, but honestly some of them I only wore once or twice since they can be so hit and miss.

The things I wore constantly were:
Motherhood dark full panel jeans (in a petite size so I could wear flats with them)
Two black pencil skirts from Motherhood (started out with an XS and graduated to a M towards the end)
Full panel denim skirt from Old Navy (wore this every day the second my belly started growing, even wore it to the hospital when I was in labor)
Three wrap dresses from Pea in the Pod (bought on sale)
Two black work dresses from Gap
Ruched t-shirts from Gap and Old Navy

Clearly the majority of my wardrobe was for work, if I didn't work outside of the home I could have gotten away with very little.

I bought very few things and managed fine in a professional setting. Any elastic skirts I already had lasted the whole time, I bought one multi purpose black dress on clearance from Old Navy, and bought maybe three plain maternity tees from Target. I also invested in a belly band, which made wearing about half my old tops possible. I also bought one nice maternity dress from Motherhood for all photos and special events. Overall, I'd say I spent about $100. Sure, I repeated outfits and did a lot of laundry, but dressing for cheap is totally possible!

Your husband definitely needs to realize that you will have to spend a little bit of money. Just break down the costs for him and show him how economical you plan on being!

Stay on top of sales. I was on the motherhood maternity email list and only bought things on sale or clearance. I started early so that I had time to do so. I bought two pairs of jeans when they had they BOGO 50%, so I paid about $40 total for two pairs and they were the only jeans I wore while pregnant. I wore a lot of my old yoga/sweatpants if I was just going to be at home.

There were a few times that instead of buying maternity items, I bought clearance items in a bigger size that had empire waists or a fit that would work with pregnancy. some of my favorite items ended up being non-maternity, but they were stretchy!

I second target, and they send out coupons for maternity clothes if you get on their list, or check target.com coupon section. Old navy as well sounds out coupons and has tons of sales.

I checked consignment stores. The closest maternity ones were a ways away (about an hour) so when we were down in the cities for something else we swung by and I found a few things for cheap.

And layer. I got gap maternity tanks that I loved and layered open cardigans over them, it make it so that I didn't have to buy as many maternity tops.

I spent less than $200 total for maternity clothes when I was pregnant.

Oh and maxis were a huge favorite, even in the winter.

Just a warning about Target Maternity. not sure what your sizing is like but even their XS is swimming on me.

Gap just had a stupid crazy sale yesterday. 50% additional off sale/clearance. Dresses for $7, tshirts for $3-4 etc. Of course I forgot to check out last night. :(

Target & Old Navy are great place to look for cheap maternity clothes. i did a mix of non-maternity (empire waisted) with maternity tops. I didn't want to stretch my normal clothes so I did buy stuff that would fit over the bumps (all 3) comfortably. I think it's part of pregnancy & you just have to suck it up & get enough to get you through. it sucks, but it's part of the process! good luck!

@Torchwood: My tips for making the best out of maternity items is to buy a couple t-shirts or camis because you can always wear your old cardigans on top without buttoning it up. Also, if you get one pair of jeans, just make sure they are a cut that you can wear with pretty much everything. Walmart actually sells maternity clothing and they look cute and affordable!
here are some examples of $7 items:

First, I'd take a look at the clothes you have, and see if anything will work. My wardrobe wasn't maternity friendly at all, so I needed to buy some new things.

I really hope you can convince your DH that you need new clothes...not because you "want" them, but because you actually won't fit into anything else.

Consignment stores, HB/FB resale groups, and shopping the sales racks are what worked for me. All told, I probably spent around $200 on maternity clothes, but that included a bunch of nursing-friendly tops/bras that I can still wear now. I think the most I paid for one item was $20 (work pants).

Also...where are you located? What size are you? I might be able to part with some of my maternity clothes, if you're really needing them!

I'm 17w and so far the only things I've bought are a new sports bra, a pair of maternity jeans from Old Navy and a belly band at Target. Otherwise I've been able to pretty much wear my normal wardrobe -- dresses, leggings, tops, etc.
