@mrs. tictactoe: her bedtime was about 8, though we've been doing more like 7:30 (which means Dh gets home after she's goes to bed more). Wakes up between 6 and 7.

@Beehive: interesting- that kind of what we've been doing, since she's been skipping the pm nap. She does ok until bedtime but she is clearly tired, so I was hoping for the nap to be more mid day.

I should add I do know the transition will be a little difficult. Just trying to make it as painless as it came be, for both of us :)

We had a rough couple of months, where the transition to 1 nap really meant less total nap time, and she was always a short napper to begin with. It probably took 2-3 months before we were finally catching up on the sleep with the 1 nap. I find the sweet spot to be 5 hours after she wakes up.

@Foodnerd81: Our situation is a little different because DS is in an afternoon preschool, but we kept his morning nap and eliminated his afternoon one. So now he naps from 9:30-11:30 or so, and is pretty much fine until he goes to bed at 8. He's nearly 2. Just wanted to mention our schedule, as it may just be the case that it's easier not to move your LO's nap later in the day.

@Mrs. Lion: I'm afraid that if I let her sleep in the morning she just won't sleep in the afternoon, no matter how short I keep it. I could be wrong but the morning nap has always been her good one.

Sometimes it feels like a choose your own adventure when you mess with their schedules.

@californiadreams: she hasn't taken a stroller nap in a while, so I'd rather her just be in the crib so I can be home.

Could you keep the morning nap at the same time and shorten it to 30 minutes, and then have a normal naptime later?

Usually the short car naps are ok for us, but the last few days he has fallen asleep in the car late (like 10:30 instead of 9) and then fights his afternoon nap even though he is exhausted. If he gets a cat nap earlier he is fine until 12:30 and sleeps 2.5ish hours. The last two days i have had to drive him around the nrighborhood to get him to fall asleep for his afternoon nap....i thought those days were behind me!!

@Foodnerd81: yup. well. it was more like we had an early afternoon nap and skipped the morning one. because he was having a hard time going to sleep for morning nap and sometimes not sleeping at all, so we stopped trying. i can't remember exactly how the transition went but it wasn't always pleasant and he didn't always sleep for as long as we thought he should.

and yes, if i am out in the morning and don't get back in time for nap, he is at risk of a short car nap. it has happened. another option is to get him to sleep in the stroller and then i can stay out for the day. but he always has short naps in the stroller, i am lucky to get an hour.

the transition is rough. we just had to ride it out. took about 1-2 months to stabilize until we could push it back enough to be at a normal time. we settled on around 1230 and she takes anywhere from a 2-3 hour nap.

@californiadreams: so you gradually transitioned pushing it back and they were all over during that time? I'm thinking pushin it back to 12 is the goal but wondering how long it will take. Also, selfishly, wondering if we will ever be able to have lunch plans again. I'm afraid to drive anywhere if she could fall asleep in the cr and have her one and only nap be 20 minutes, you know?

yes. LO's nap lengths were all the over the place. once we got it t around 12pm, he went through a phase where he had like 3 - 3.5 hour naps!

I am finally accepting that C (14 months) is moving to one nap. Her morning nap, starting at 9:30, was getting nice and long, and most days she was skipping the afternoon nap. So, I did my reading and set about pushing the morning nap to start later, hopefully making it longer and ending later in the day so she wasn't awake from 11 to 7:30 (yikes).

It seems like the later I push it, the shorter it's getting. I'm basically pushing it by about 15 minutes a day (she went down at 9:50, slept 2.5 ours. 10, slept 2 hours. 10:15, slept only 1.5 hours).

I realize this is a transition but I'm wondering if other people experienced this? Am I pushing them back too quickly-- those were three days in a row. Basically I have been keeping her up until she seems like she really needs to sleep, and she falls asleep right away.

Anyone else? I've got a long afternoon ahead of me!
