Yes, nap transition can definitely affect nighttime sleeping. My DD transitioned from 2 naps, at 10 and 3, at about 9mo. She dropped her afternoon naps first - she just became impossible to put down. We just did quiet activities, rocked in the glider while reading or singing, and got her to bed earlier. At the same time we moved her morning nap gradually later until she was napping at about 12:30. Because we were letting her take the lead it was a slooooow transition - it took about a month.

She would nap around 10:30 and 2, but eventually she just dropped her second nap and refused to sleep. So I moved her one nap to 1:30.

We've been going back and forth with this for weeks now. She was napping at 9 and 1 with bedtime at 8. Then she started refusing the morning nap for a couple of weeks, so we did one nap at 12:30. Then, she went back to two naps for a while at 10 and 2. Now she's definitely not sleepy enough for two naps anymore, so we're just going to stick with one from here one out. Right now she goes down at 12-12:30. We'll slowly try to push that back, but it's working now.

How old is M now?

DD officially transitioned to a 1-nap schedule when she started daycare at 20-months, but she was ready to drop her 2nd nap around 16-17 months (I was just resisting it because I selfishly liked having 2 breaks in my day).

With her 2-nap schedule, she took a morning nap from 10-11:30 am. Then an afternoon nap from 2-3:30 pm.

After she dropped to 1-nap, we had her napping from 1-4 pm on weekdays, but at daycare her naptime is 12-2:30 pm. I found that it was easy to be flexible with her naptime once she dropped to 1-nap.

We would start her nap anytime from 12:30-2pm... and never let her nap past 4pm. Her one nap was usually 3-hours long.

She was still able to go down by 7-7:30 pm.

LO was pretty much forced to move to 1 nap because of daycare. Before daycare, she was sleeping around 10:30am and 3:30pm. At daycare, she naps from 12-2pm. While she was transitioning (there were some days where she was only sleeping for 40 minutes) we moved her bedtime to 6:30. Now she sleeps at around 6:45pm.

We switched DS over right before 12 months. His previous schedule was :

5:00/6:00 am - wakeup
9:00-10:00 am - first nap
1:00-3:00 pm - second nap
7:00/7:30 pm - bedtime

At around 10/10.5 months he started really fighting his second nap of the day. It would take me hours to put him to sleep, and then he'd only sleep for 45 minutes to an hour. So at about 11.5 months, I stopped putting him down for his first nap of the day. At first, I was putting him down around 11:00/11:30. It took about a week, before he fully switched over, and there have been a few days since there when he takes 2 naps because he's sick and cranky. I've also been pushing back his naptime (mostly to extend how long we can be out in the morning). Nowadays, his schedule looks like:

7:00/7:30 - wakeup
12:00/12:30 - 3:00/3:30 - nap
7:00 pm - bedtime

I'm home with the kids full-time now, but when DD switched from 2 to 1 naps, daycare would just ask her if she was tired and wanted to take a nap. If she wanted a nap, they'd limit it to 1 hour, and she'd go back to sleep in the afternoons. DD's transition took a lot longer (15 - 21 months) but I think that was the right approach for her. DS adapts a lot more quickly, so going cold turkey with him was the best approach.

I think M is transitioning to 1 naps and it's wrecking havoc on her night time sleep.

What time is LO's nap time if they are down to 1 nap. What time was it at 2 naps? How did you transition? Did you enlist the help of daycare?

Her 2 naps are roughly 930 and 200ish.
