I think it all depends on your parenting style and support from your partner. We had kids 20 months apart and it was not any more overwhelming than having 1 child. I very, very rarely, had to do bedtime alone though and my husband starting doing bedtime with #1 months before #2 was born. I feel so blessed and my kids are best friends. Literally run into each other's room first thing in the morning.

My two will be 19 months apart, and I would have had them closer if possible. It might be exhausting, but I'm kind of in the 'get it over with' camp. It has bad connotations, but I don't really think it's so bad to think of it that way. I don't love diapers, I don't love the under 2 stage, I don't love sacrificing so much of my body. But, I want a lot of kids, so I just want to have them all and start enjoying the older years.
If I had 3 kids and spaced them out so they were 2+ years apart, I would be doing diapers forever! I would be glued to naptimes forever! Etc etc.

DD and DS are 29m apart. I was hoping for a 2.5-3 year gap so we started trying after DD turned 18m and got pregnant fairly soon but that isn't always the case. By the end of my pregnancy when mobility became difficulty DD was old enough to climb into her carseat by herself so I wasn't having to lift her all the time; however that is when she started showing interest in the potty so I had to be lifting her for that.

We went for it hoping for a 2.5 year age gap and they will be 31 months apart. The first trimester with a toddler is pretty awful but now that that is over I'm psyched about the age difference. My son is now 26 months and can communicate his needs and is getting old enough to understand having a sibling, etc. I can't imagine having 2 super close in age so this age difference seems ideal.

Thank you so much for weighing in, ladies! This was so helpful and maybe the most helpful thing is that I found myself "rooting for" replies advocating the closer gap - so I guess I know what I want to do now! Thanks for sharing, and helping me get some clarity on what I want to do.

My kids are 26 months apart, so DD was 16 months when we got pregnant with #2. Exactly where you're at right now!

I love the age gap, and she wasn't too terrible as a 2 year old, so it wasn't too bad having a newborn when she was in her 2's. She's even more strong willed now at 3, but she is also more independent. So I see pros/cons regardless what you decide. I do like closer age gaps though. They can do more things together sooner, and it's been so fun for our family and keeps getting better by the day.

@Running Elley: lol ME.

Mine are 19m apart. 21m (on 20th) and 2m tomorrow.

DD cracked 7 teeth in 6w of DSs first six weeks. I also have another curveball I wasn't planning on, but I still think I would do that gap. The tantrums and foolishness of the older one right now are crazy, thankfully her cute moments make up for it!

I'm glad both are in dipes, getting out and then starting again would do a number on my head!

That being said all age gaps have been done a zillion times before us! Everyone makes it, very individual on what works for each family :)

We are shooting for 2.5-3 years so that ds is more independent and hopefully potty trained by the time we have a nb. We started a few mths early tho. He is currently almost 20 months. We wanted to build in time since I have long cycles and it may take a while before getring pregnant again.

Mine are 1 day shy of 22 months apart. I got pregnant when DD1 was 13 months old. I was extremely ill while pregnant (needed IVs, on zofran, sick all 9 months), and it was HARD taking care of a just 1 year old like that. It's also been really hard having a 2 year old and a baby, but my sister and I are 21 months apart and just love each other so much, so while it's hard, I know the relationship my girls will hopefully have, and I'm glad I did it this way.

@vinomama: everyone said not to plan around first possible due date because it wouldn't happen right away. But it did. And my LOs will be 2y3m apart! I'm nervous but for other reasons we had to crunch our timeline. My ideal would've been 3 years.

LO will be 28 months old when #2 arrives in September. I really think it will be perfect for our family. Old enough that LO will understand some but not old enough that it will take a long time to get used to having a sibling. She won't really remember life before. Also, it helps that LO is extremely verbal and about 90% potty trained. Again, it's great for our family, but that doesn't make it great for yours.

I LOVE having my 2 under 2. They're 13.5 months apart and I honestly think DD came at the perfect age for DS. He was walking and independent but he hadn't hit the crazy tantrum stage yet. Now at 21 months and 8 months it's become A LOT harder...mainly because DS has become a lot more opinionated and he's just all over the place. I can't imagine having a newborn right now.

Sooo since your DS is already 16 months old I'd vote for 2 under 3.

I love having two under two. It's crazy how much I love it. They are 17 months apart. In my head, I was freaking out because I thought it would be so hard, but it has been great. My oldest didn't sttn until he was 1 y/o, I had tons of bf'ing struggles and was so worried the same would happen with dd. Nope...she's sttn consistently since about 3 months or so, no bf'ing issues. The hardest thing is probably financial-two in diapers and two in daycare is a doozie!

I also vote for 2 under 3 but I have absolutely nothing to go on! I am planning for 2 under 4 so I am a proponent of the larger gap. For us, I want more time with LO one-on-one and also I would like him to be a little more independent before we think about bringing another LO into the picture and think that this spacing will make the transition esier for everyone. Just my two cents though!

Honestly? This is just my experience:
We've been ttc 15m. It has been a blessing in disguise because I CANNOT imagine if I had baby number 2 when LO was only 17m, or even now at 21m. I am STOKED that he will be at least 2.5 by the time we have another. I plan on begining potty training and also putting him in pre-school a few days a week so I can have an adjustment period with the new baby. Also, by then, lo#1 will be FF in his car seat, which will free up a TON on space in my car (important with 2 LOs!)
So, basically: I vote 2 under 3.

I need to make a decision in the next couple of months whether to ttc for #2 this year or next year. Reason being that we aim to have baby in any months other than Feb, Mar and April due to extremeley busy work season for me (accountant).

LO #1 is 16 months old and we adore him, are ready for another one, etc. But I also know it will be really, really hard to have a newborn with a 28month old. (yes we may not get pregnant right away but if we do, that would be the age range).

I don't really want to wait to ttc, but I do think it would be easier to have LO #1 be three years old, probably potty trained, etc.

What would you do? Do you have a 2 year or 3 year gap between babies? Pros/cons??
