@Silva: I went through this exact thing at almost the exact same age. What I found is that the rocking chair just wasn't working for him anymore. I don't know why, it was perfect! Not sure this will work for you but the only place he will sleep is in my queen bed. So we do a book and I lay with him, which is nice because I get a little 15-minute nap, and eventually he falls asleep. We stopped the bottle and actually cut it out completely a little after he turned two. That was actually kind of a difficult transition. But my son really sleeps well in my bed. Actually it's the only place he will nap, and took me 18 months to realize it (guess it wasn't safe before that).

@wrkbrk: he’s home full time so it’s up to me.... at this age daycare could always get my daughter to nap but I had to lie wth her, if I remember correctly

@Silva: Probably but like nap train lite haha. I’d stick him in his crib with a book and a toy and just leave. No bottle, no sitting with him. He’ll probably cry for a bit at first then just accept it. Does he nap at school? That’s the only tricky part bc if you only get to enforce your new routine on weekends it will take longer...

Agree with suggestions of trying to ditch the bottle. We used to do milk in a 360 cup in bed, but now just water, and making it smaller and smaller amounts so he wakes up dry.

Other part I think is getting yourself out of there ASAP. Up until about 18 months, our presence calmed LO at bedtime and naptime, but now it keeps him up longer because he wants to "play" with us. If we are there, he will NOT fall asleep.

@Silva: we also just welcomed number 3, and I’m all for keeping my 2 year old confined during nap!!

She still has her bedtime and morning bottle, but drinks it on her own/not in her room.

@looch: we’ve considered that, but Id rather see if a new routine will do the trick first. Without a place for him to be contained, it could be pretty challenging for me to manage naps/quiet time/bedtime for three kids when I’m on my own 😬

@Silva: My son had a bottle at that age, I don't worry too much about it.

As for the crib, this was around the time when we stopped using the crib and began using a full sized bed for all naps and overnight sleep, which I wasn't prepared for but made all the difference in terms of my son settling.

@LBee: yes, I agree- I really don't think its appropriate to drop the nap. I think I need so structure the next couple weeks to allow for a strict nap schedule and go for it.

@looch: yes, afternoon nap- he typically goes right after lunch. its way past time to drop the bottle but I've been lazy about it....

@Mrs. Champagne: @kiddosc: might be a good time to drop the nighttime bottle too. we have another baby coming in October and its obviously not going to be feasible to carry on with the routine as it is.

Is this with an afternoon nap? I am wondering if you cut the bottle and put him down right after lunch?

This is a tough nap age. It seems a lot of people drop naps at this point and don't realize it's just a weird point in time developmentally and that the child probably isn't really ready to drop nap. I have multiple friends who attempted to drop nap then turned around and added it back once things flushed out.

I would nap train - cut the bottle and the sleep crutches. Might as well work on some good sleep habits while he's trapped in the crib. During this stage we gave books in the crib and set a time we would get him (dropped him in the crib and walked out) - meaning if we put him down at 1 PM, nap was over at 3 PM.... even if he eventually fell asleep at 2:30 PM. Everything flushed out pretty quickly and he was back sleeping 1-3 PM.

I would be committed to ditching the bottle and figuring out an easier nap routine. We do the same routine at naptime as we do at bedtime. Read a book, rock and sing, lay down, cover up, say goodnight, out the door. The book and songs give her a few minutes to wind down and now the songs are a sleep cue and she's yawning through them. I would really try not to go back in, even if he is re-enacting wrestle-mania.

I've also experienced a bit of a nap regression around 2-2.5 with both kids but committed to pushing through it and my oldest still napped until 4.5.

I also agree a two year old needs a nap! I’d switch the routine so he has milk with lunch, a book not in his room. And then put him in his crib and leave. That’s what we’ve always done.. sometimes it takes longer to wind down but they always end up passing out for a good nap.

Alright, we've created a bit of a monster with my son for naps. We do a bottle, rock and sing, and then sit in a chair near his crib until he falls asleep. Its been like this for months (he used to fall asleep while drinking the bottle so this is a transition from that bad habit).
Lately it is taking longer and longer to get him to fall asleep. Today I left after 50 minutes and he still wasn't asleep. I ended up going back up to give him some books to look at because he had stacked all the buddies and stuff in his crib and was jumping onto it. Now he is at least sitting quietly and looking at books.

I am committed to continuing to push naps, even though he certainly tries to skip them whenever he can. When he doesn't nap he's a mess from about 3:30/4:00 on. Yesterday he didn't nap because we were out and about, and he fell asleep at 5:40 for bed, the second I set him down in his crib. I also just think a 2 year old needs naps.

So. I should nap train? Like completely change the routine, get rid of the bottle, and just commit to doing it for a few weeks? How do you nap train a toddler? He was trying to climb out of his crib, but I flipped it around so the short end is up against the wall and that has stopped for now.

The other issue is that he does seem to take awhile to wind down, naturally. Like at bedtime he will just talk to himself and sing for 30 minutes to an hour.
