Sometimes if B doesn't want to hold hands I'll hold the collar of his shirt or jacket. As long as I've got a grip on him somewhere I think it's ok.

My LO usually won't hold my hand but she will touch my leg and stay very close to me instead. I trust her enough not to run off. It's so helpful because carrying my 18 month old is hard!

So far what works is telling her if she wants to walk she has to hold my hand and the alternative is going in the stroller or me carrying her. But my daughter loves to walk so that's enough of an incentive. I'll pick her up for a few seconds and she'll start promising to hold my hand.

@Madison43: I do the same- DD hates being up and restrained. I also let her carry a lovey if she walks but if I have to carry her, bag, and keys then my hands are too full to bring a friend for her, which is a big incentive. She is 3 and is mostly pretty good about holding hands now. Hopefully she doesn't regress when I am carrying the new baby around all the time.

DD is 26 months and is asserting her independence in this way as well (and many others). Like @Pumpkin Pie: suggested, I can usually get through to her with the cars explanation. It can be a little difficult in front of our house, though, where the cars are less frequent... She's given us some scares lately!

We went through this a couple of months ago and it led to some epic meltdowns. What ultimately worked, while excruciating, was to have a bunch of chats about it, we shopped her that cars couldn't see because she wasn't tall enough by measuring her next to cases etc and then taking practice walks where I let her just loose her marbles while I sat on the sidewalk next to her while restraining her as needed. It was no fun but she needed the prescribe and needed to see I wasn't giving in. It really helped that we have a playground 4 blocks from here so it's five street crossings to get there and once we got through them we got to the playground. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I used a carrier to wear her home though...

The majority of the time I have a stroller for my little one (1) and I carry my big one (3). If I don't have the stroller, I had been carrying them both. My newly 3 yo has just started getting walking privileges back after one too many instances of ripping her hand away from me. It was actually easier to carry both than to try and force a resistant 2 yo to hold my hand or worse, chase her when she pulled away.

Going through it now. I actually explained to her that there are lots of cars and if she didn't hold my hand the car might hit her and she'll get an ouchy. I made her stand behind me and watch the cars as they drove by and I explained. It's working for now.

DS1 is 26 months and more and more does not want to hold my hand in a parking lot or crossing the street. If it's me and DH, one of us can carry him but when it's just one of us and we also have DS2 who is 6 months it's a challenge.
Have you dealt with this before? Any recommendations?
