From what I've heard, there is a phase somewhere in the 2's for most children where the kiddos fight naps but if you push through and keep putting them down consistently and impose the rest time, they will revert to taking naps. Lots of people quit naps in the 2's I think for this reason, but I think having a nap or quiet rest period built into their day makes rest time easier to swallow when they're older and dealing with the exhaustion of things like preschool, pre-K or kinder.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. My three year old doesn't nap every day. We keep the same routine. If he doesn't sleep after an hour or two, I get him up. He needs the down time and most days he still naps.

@winniebee: Ha! I read your comment yesterday and T went without a nap but today he went down for a nap a whole hour earlier than he usually would. He was desperate for one. Maybe a nap every other day is what will work for us!

We had this exact situation a few weeks ago (2.5) and we ditched naps. She goes to bed 40mins earlier and goes straight to sleep now.

Could you try naps every other day? I found when my son was transitioning out of naps he would nap every other day. Or nap two days Nd then skip nap.

@artsyfartsy: can you just do a period of quiet time in the afternoon? My girl started dropping her nap at just over two so I would put her on to her bed with some books and told her she didn't need to sleep but did need to play quietly until I came and got her.

@erinbaderin: He's manageable. Maybe a little bit more cranky. Although I've noticed he's SUPER cranky after waking up from naps (but recovers by dinner time) when he used to be happy after waking.

@Foodnerd81: We roll with the punches! Lol

@erinpye: I wouldn't mind going napless! He was kind of the same way when he dropped from 2 naps to 1.

My oldest stopped napping around 2.5. Youngest is T's age and doesn't always nap. It's not unusual to stop around 2!

We have phases where she will fight the nap (sometimes crying and carrying on, sometimes just happily playing or singing in her crib for an hour or more). Then she goes back to napping. Personally I've just kept trying and if she doesn't nap but still stays in her crib for an hour, then that's the best I can do. She can skip a nap here and there and be ok but she's definitely crankier by bed time. Then she will take 2+ hour naps so I think she needs t still. So I guess my advice is keep trying but try not to stress. (So easy to say, so hard to do!)

He's not necessarily too young to not need a nap, I think - my two Goddaughters both gave up napping at 2. Does he meltdown at dinnertime when he doesn't have a nap, or is he more or less ok until bedtime? It's probably a phase and you could either fight through it (that would probably be my choice, because I'm pretty attached to my midday break) or give in.

Not as in, he fights me. He's just not wanting or needing a nap anymore. He usually goes down at 12 and naps for about 1.5 hours.

It's 3pm now and he's acting a little tired, but it's too late. If he fell asleep now we would never get him to bed. And actually, when he doesn't nap he goes to bed MUCH easier. Lately it's been a fight to get him to bed on a regular day.

He's still too young to not need a nap (and I want my break! Lol) but our day flows better without one and bedtime is easier. What would you do?
