The pediatrician heard a murmur at 9m in D. A week later we were at the cardiologist for an Echo and he did have an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). Normally these close on their own, so he was monitored, getting an Echo every 6 months till he was 2. At that appointment, the holes hadn't closed, so he was scheduled for a closure. He had it closed by catheterization at CHOP and went home the next day. He had an Echo in January (about a year after surgery) and everything looks great!

All this to try to calm your concerns that even if they do find something, it can be a pretty "simple" fix. It's still surgery, so it's a little scary, of course, but it was quick and D recovered amazingly well!!

My DD also has an innocent heart murmur - she had an echocardiogram just to make sure it wasn't anything serious. It was picked up during her 4 year old wellness visit (the ped didn't even pick it up on her previous visits).

They detected one in my son around 6-8 months I believe. We went for an echo and it turned out to be an innocent murmur. The echo was super quick and easy. They still hear it when we go to the dr at 21 months but it shouldn't cause any issues.

@Banana330: We recently took our 16 month old in to see the ped when he had Hand Foot and Mouth. He had a 103 degree fever and the on call pediatrician looked at me and said "So he's always had this heart mumur?". We have been to a million doctor appointments in my son's life and we had never heard a murmur before. They got us in to see a cardiologist the next week (I'm surprised you're having to wait SO long for appointments!) and the echo showed that my son's heart anatomy was completely perfect. The cardiologist told us that some children as their hearts grow get what's called an "innocent murmur" and it's likely caused by vibration in one of the tendons that hold that heart valves in place and needed no follow up at all. He did say he could still hear the murmur but mentioned if my son had a 103 degree fever when the pediatrician listened to him that the murmur likely sounded really scary.

At my daughters 2.5 year appointment the dr detected a slight one. Didn't refer us to a specialist though, just said they'd keep an eye on it at subsequent visits. I wish I'd asked more questions and maybe pushed for sooner follow up.

@Banana330: ours wasn't noticed till 3 either, but the dr explained that it might only be noticeable when they're sick and their heart might be beating faster.

Our daughter was born with a slight murmur. She went for echo at around 3 mo. Cardiologist was not concerned in the slightest, esp given the fact that both my father and I also have murmurs.

To be honest, whenever she goes for check ups, the Dr's dont even notice it (she is now 1.5yrs). She is a happy healthy and thriving little girl!

LO had one around 2.5 or 3, and we had an echo (and seriously he was the best doc we've ever had - so good with kids). She did fine and it was deemed to be the type of murmur that a lot of kids have that generally disappear in childhood. Good luck with your appointments!

So DH took DD to her 2 yr appointment this week and the doc detected a heart murmur. She's got an echo (in june) and cardiologist appointment (aug) but i'm just wondering if this an issue or generally turns out routine? I'm kicking myself for not being there cause DH isn't great at asking follow up questions.

I have a vague recollection of the midwife thinking she had one after she was born but they couldn't hear it on subsequent visits.
