@Mrs. Lion: I'm glad to hear you say that, because my kid has gotten an ear infection (not always needing antibiotics, but always noticeable at the dr) with her molars and the 2 canines she has so far. I thought I was nuts thinking there was a relation!

@Meridian: Luckily, both my kids have been pretty willing to let me look. If you're able to get a look, if the teeth are close to erupting the gums can be red and swollen and you might be able to see the white peaks of the tooth just under the gum. But I also think the teeth moving up can be painful, not just the "cutting" part. Sorry if that's not helpful at all!

2 year molars were off and on for months for us - we'd have 2-3 days of crankiness, drooling, low grade fever, and disrupted sleep.

BUT if Motrin isn't helping I'd take her to the ped. One or two times it was an ear infection and another time it was terrible ulcers on his tonsils from hand foot mouth disease.

@Meridian: I think my DD's teeth are super slow moving, but each molar would take up to 2 weeks to fully come through. :bummed: Literally, one little corner would come through, then another a few days later and so on. It is miserable.

And to add icing to the cake, she only gets one in at a time so far... It's so bad now she thinks getting ibuprofen at night is just part of her bedtime routine, which honestly it basically is. We have two more to go still...

@MrsSRS: super late to this post, but how long did molars teething hell last for your LO? We're in the thick of it, he has been screaming most of the night for the last 3 nights. We are exhausted, but I have a feeling this is just the start! And during the day he is a clingy, fussy, drools mess!

We were also lucky with the 2 year molars, I just noticed them for the first time the other day when brushing his teeth - he hadn't let on at all. Shocking considering the fuss caused by the first set of molars!

We were an exception and her 2 year molars popped in without us even noticing they were coming in. Now, the other teeth? Yeah, different story.

My son is just getting his 2 year molars now (he turns 3 in Aug). Luckily it hasn't disrupted his sleep, but he is drooling like a madman and his appetite has decreased. One of the four has broken through... Only 3 more to go!

My two were also late teethers. My son didn't get his 2 year molars until after just after 2.5. They didn't cause any problems. My daughter is almost 2.5 now, and there is no sign of them. I hope they are as easy as they were for my son.

My LO had zero teething issues and was a super chill baby and champion sleeper but the 2 year molars definitely bothered her. She would wake up randomly in the middle of the night crying and while she always just put herself back to sleep but there were many nights that she would cry out in pain while they were coming in. And I guess bc the 2 year molars are big in surface area it takes awhile for them to completely break through the gums which is why they can be such a pain for a long time.

DD just got her one year molars around 2 but I think she's getting her 2 years now at 27 months. She's been extremely challenging to say the least and keeps complaining her teeth hurt, so I definitely think the out of character miserable behavior is a result. She takes foreverrrrr to teethe, so it's going to be fun here for a while. Perfect timing to be bringing home a newborn lol. Hope it passes quickly for you!

My kids get their teeth late, so DS is getting his 2yo molars now at 2 years 11 months. (DD is 11 months and has 2 teeth, for comparison)
He didn't have a particularly hard time with any of his teeth, but either these are really bad or he's sick with something mysterious. He's woken every hour or two sobbing the last three nights. He's not eating much. He can't tell me what/if something hurts but he's just off his game and super weepy. Anyone else have really, really bad 2yo molars? Otherwise we're going to end up at the ped...
