According to Dr. Google, two year olds need 12-14 hours of sleep. So if your son goes to sleep at 8 & is up at 6, he's getting 10 hours overnight plus two hours at nap, which means he's hitting his sleep needs. He just might not need as much sleep as he used to -- or as much as other kids.
My two have always been on the lowest end of the sleep spectrum for their age. 6/6:30 wake up sadly sounds normal to me! :silly: Just wanted to throw that out there in case, despite everything else, your son still wakes up early!
Good luck!

I think blackout curtains could be worth a try! I think his sleep schedule sounds pretty normal though. My 2 year daughter (turned 2 last month, so a young 2) goes to bed around 7:30 and it usually takes about 30 mins for her to fall asleep, sometimes longer. She wakes up around 7:30 - 8am. She also takes a 2ish hour nap after lunch when she's home (she won't nap at daycare).

We've never used a sleepsack and we have the AC on in her room all night. She goes to sleep with a blanket on, but its off her pretty quickly once she falls asleep.

We do have her room setup in a specific way at night as we learned this is what helps her sleep best and is probably why she won't nap at daycare. The curtains aren't blackout, but close and since there's a ledge under her window we use stuffed animals to hold them shut against the window. She also has a dim nightlight on and a white noise machine. All of this together works best for her.

My 2yo DS is similar to this. We put his sleep sack on backward so that he can't take it off. He played with it the first couple of nights trying to get it off but now leaves it alone.

He goes to bed anywhere between 7:45-8 p.m. and it really varies widely whether he is asleep fast or not. Some nights he lies awake until 9:15 rolling around, singing, etc.! It stresses me out, but I try to tell myself that he knows what to do and he will go to sleep when he's tired, that it's okay for him to be in his bed while we have adult time, and that I cannot force another human being to sleep. He will sleep until 6:45-7:15 a.m. most mornings. We went as far as to use painter's tape to tape his blackout curtains closed at the edges so that it stays DARK in his room.

When DS1 was that age, we had similar problems. We ended up cutting nap to 30 minutes max (and I was 8 months pregnant) and often skipping. If we didn’t, he was up for hours in the middle of the night (he was quiet, but I knew he wasn’t getting the sleep he needed.) Sometimes he was a bear in the afternoon, but he started to go to bed more easily and slept 11-12 hours at night.

He still has low sleep needs (he’s 8 and sleeps 9-10 hours a night). Probably not what you wanted to hear, but we actually all ended up happier when we dropped the nap.

I have an almost 2 year old and that’s about how much he sleeps, except he’s in bed around 9 and wakes up 7:30-8 usually. And about an hour and a half of napping. No sleep sack but his bedroom is on the warmer side. Black out curtains could help but some kids just have different sleep needs. His schedule sounds pretty normal to me, although unfortunately early for you!

Can you try blackout curtains and see if that helps? You don’t have to invest to start … can always tape up black trash bags and see how it works. My kids definitely respond to the lighter mornings and then it becomes a habit. Our blackout setup was so worth it.

I just posted about another sleep battle so I feel your pain! My daughter is closer to 3 but she doesn’t need a ton of sleep. 10 hours at night plus nap could be plenty. You could try shortening the nap a bit if you want more at night. My oldest slept more - each kid is different for sure so I’d follow behavior cues on whether he is getting enough. I’d guess part of it is developmental too, like ooh I learned a new skill to unzip this, let me stay up playing with it! :silly: So try attacking all fronts. Good luck!!

How long should my 2 year old be sleeping overnight? In average we put him in the crib at 7:30 and hes asleep by 8. In the winter when it was darker in the morning he was sleeping until 7:30, sometimes 8. Once summer hit its bright in the morning and hes up at 6-630 more often than not.

I thought it was the sun, but even on darker mornings he is up early.
we are moving him to a different room soon because I'm pregnant and we will use the nursery for the new baby. I fully plan on blackout curtains in there.

He has also in the last few days learned how to unzip his sleepsack. I wonder if he is getting cold...? Since I wake up 3 times in the night to pee right now I've been trying to cover him better but it's not easy because i dont want to wake him. We tried a blanket one night instead but he fell sleep on top of it instead.

Two nights in the last three he has not fallen asleep until after 9. He just talks to himself and tosses and turns. Doesnt cry. But he cant be getting enough sleep when this happens!! Last night it was around 9 he finally fell asleep and this morning he was up at 5:45.

Is this a phase or is a combination of sleep sack, bright room, etc?

Maybe we should turn off the AC so its warm in his room and he doesnt even need a blanket or sleepsack?

For his naps he is usually in there for 2 hours. It might take him a half hour (sometimes 15 min) to fall asleep so he is getting at least 1.5 hours there.

I'm just worried he isnt sleep enough...
