I was about to write this exact post, but saw yours instead! I'm not glad that anyone has to go through this, but I'm glad I'm not alone. LO has be really tough with his naps for the last month. He's 20 months and I don't know what's up with him. He will scream bloody murder the second we put him down for his nap no matter who puts him down. Some days, he's fine and will stop crying within 5 minutes and go down shortly after that, but yesterday, he cried for 30 minutes, then played until 3pm (put him down at 1) and THEN he fell asleep. He then slept for an hour and a half when we had to drag him out of bed.

I'm at a loss as he was always such a great afternoon napper once we dropped his morning nap. He still goes down ok for us at night...but there are also days where he's rolling around until 10pm.

I have no advice...just commiseration!

We had a major sleep issue last month at 21 months. My son also has pretty low sleep needs - 10.5/11 hours at night and about a 1.5 hr nap, give or take. I was terrified he was trying to drop the nap!

I ended up rubbing his back and staying in his room til he fell asleep at both naps and bedtime - he was throwing such a fit that there was no way he was going to put himself to sleep otherwise. It was a huge time suck, but I lived through it for 2-3 weeks. I slowly started cutting back the back rub time to 2 songs on his aquarium, and then I'd slowly back out of the room. After 3 weeks, we were back to normal. We still had a week or so of early wakeups (6/6:30 vs his usual 7:30) but he stopped waking up sobbing, so that was a win.

I still dont know what the issue was....molars, growth spurt, etc.

@KayKay: oh gosh. Glad to hear we are not alone but sorry you are struggling too.

@BananaPancakes: 4:15?!?!? Holy smokes. I'm sorry. I don't get it either. Yesterday a 45 minute nap and last night we tried an early bed time but he fell asleep at normal time and woke up 20 mins earlier for a grand total of less than 10 hours of sleep. Today is going to be awesome.

Oh man, I feel like I could write a book on all the toddler sleep dilemmas we've had since he turned 2. I keep trying to pin it down to illness or molars or learning new skills, but who knows. He woke up ready to party on Sunday morning at 4:15 am. 4:15 am!! He fights bedtime some nights, then fights naptime some days. We've had a handful of no nap days since his birthday, and he suddenly switched from consistant 7:30 am wakeups to anything from 5-6:15am wakeups. I have no clue. I think toddlers are just wacko. :)

@winniebee I may have recently been googling the same question! We have definitely been struggling more often at nap time (generally better if we push it out til 130) and some night times too. Ours seems to be less tantrum-y and more stalling, although often with tears mixed in.

@Sammyfab: I feel like everytime I complain on HB about naps or something it gets better. I'm trying to remember everything is a phase but I'm petrified he is trying to drop his nap!!

I've read that there is a 2-year regression - often in the form of nap strikes. Honestly, I just think it's developmental and you have to push through. Unless you think he is ready to drop the nap, keep putting him down for quiet time and stick to your schedule. Hopefully it will pass in a couple of weeks. Show him who's boss! :silly:

Is there one?

I'm trying to figure out WTF is wrong with my son. He has been a near perfect night sleeper since 9 months old. Now, he's never had high sleep needs, but what's happening lately is downright absurd. For the past 9 months he has slept 10.5-11 hours overnight with a 1.5 hour nap. For the past month he has refused naps on some days (we leave him in his crib 2 hours and he doesn't sleep but then falls asleep the second we leave the house in a stroller or carseat). He has cut night sleep to 10 hours as well. Nothing has changed except I'm more flexible on bedtime (sometimes will push by 15 mins). He takes longer to fall asleep for night sleep and cries before bed now.

He is utterly exhausted after barely napping all weekend. We tried an early bedtime last night (7:15) and he cried until 7:45 and then slept all night until 6:30. But then I put him down for a nap at 12:30 and he didn't nap until 1:20 and woke at 2 screeeeeaming bloody murder and I left him crying for 30 mins hoping he will go back to sleep but he didn't. Started shouting no sleep and threw everything out of crib. Now he's up but yawning. He was acting super cranky last Friday so I tried an early nap putting him down at 12 and he didn't nap for 2 hours just screamed. Is this behavioral? WHY?

He doesn't have 2 year molars but I don't see them coming in. HELP. Mama is 11 weeks pregnant and cannot handle a toddler who sleeps so very little.
