I think a lot has to do with this age, dreams are more vivid, imaginations run wild, ect. DD still struggles with this, we have included a nightlight & a princess hologram that goes up on the ceiling that "watch over her" and "keep her safe." that that seems to have helped She also has her bed full of blankets, stuffed animals, dolls, ect.

@Giulia1977: Aww, I'm glad you were able to figure it out! DS is sticking to his cryptic "fuzz"... he's been better the last couple nights, but still woke up crying last night a few times around 1am and needed some cuddles. He asked for a second lovey (he has his normal dinosaur Angel Dear, and a robot one that we sometimes travel with), so I gave that to him and he seemed to like that.

my son just went through this at 22 months! he already talks pretty well so when I asked him he said he was scared of animals ?!!! i kept thinking how that would be and realized he was scared of the shadows of the stuffed animals!! so before putting him to bed we put them away and now we use a little night light!

Thanks guys! I think you're right, he may be ready for a night light (and @looch: he may be ready for a big bed, but I'm not!). He keeps talking about how he's scared of the "fuzz", and I think he means the fluffy stuff rather than the police... we'll see what happens tonight. Amazing the different issues that come up at each age... @sleepymonkey: J would *love* your sleeping situation (and actually it seems pretty nice... I don't think I'd mind it either!). His floor is not nearly as comfy!

in addition to looch's suggestion about maybe him being ready for a crib, does he have anything like a nightlight or twilight turtle that may help if he's scared of the dark? hope he gets back to feeling comfortable again soon!

So, when this happened with my son, around 20 months of age, I tried everything...including CIO, sitting right next to the crib, etc. It escalated into my son vaulting himself out of the crib one night and sure enough, the next day, I announced that it was time to sleep (nap) and he walked himself to the futon we kept in the room and he fell asleep right there.

It could be that he's just ready to move out of the crib.

DS has always been a great sleeper, but just recently he's started acting like he's scared in his crib. If DH or I go in to his room, he calms down, and he's able to fall asleep if we're next to him on the floor beside his crib. Nothing in his room has changed, and he hasn't watched anything scary that would cause this.

I'm wondering what anyone who has been in this situation has done - last night, each time he woke up in the middle of the night, rather than fall back asleep like he normally does, he got scared again and started crying.

Any amazing secrets to solving this one? Thanks!!
