I think my son is pretty verbal at school but my sister is dealing with this now with her son. She thinks he is just quiet at school and it's just his personality. I feel like that makes a lot of sense.

I know when I was in my early school years, I was very quiet and I was put into the slow reading group. My mom was concerned but once I got going a little bit, I ended up being one of the strongest readers in the class. I guess I knew what was going on but I wasn't comfortable speaking in a new situation right away.

My daughter barely spoke at school last year. They wanted her speech evaluated because she hardly spoke - but she was a full-on chatterbox at home. At the beginning of this year she was still very quiet in class but then something clicked, or she got more comfortable, mature, what have you, but now she doesn't stop talking! She loves to sing at school too and she pretty much will tell anyone anything at any time ;). So to me it sounds like a shyness/comfort level situation but obviously every child is different. My daughter is 4 now.

@MrsADS: DD is a wild one, too! Very extroverted, which is why I was surprised about the shyness/not talking.

@mrswin: she's verbal with close friends and family, but nonverbal with people she doesn't know as well. I thought maybe it was shyness in those situations, but she's been at this new daycare for a month so I thought she'd be talking to them by now! And she sings all of the songs they sing there, so I thought she was singing them there...but she's not!

Same here, although my son is 19 months. He has a lot of words at home and learns new ones all the time. At daycare, apparently they have only heard him say "mama" and "dada". We have observed him there and his teachers also say he is a bit more cautious/reserved and is somewhat of an observer as well. Which is interesting because he's a wild man at home. I am not worried about it since he talks so much at home.

My son didn't have all those changes - he had been attending the same daycare since 12 months - and at around 2 his daycare said to me "Our goal for him for the next month is to start putting words together. We want to see him saying more than one word at a time." At home he talked in full sentences! He's just very shy and tends to withdraw in the company of people he doesn't know very well (basically everybody except my immediate family). He's 3 now and has finally warmed up.

@GreeneB2: is she non-verbal in other situations that would concern you? We have a friend who's daughter has selective mutism and she would become non-verbal in situations like this but also in organized activities or other group situations, etc.

@GreeneB2: For my DD it's just her personality. I don't think she's that shy; she encounters a LOT of people in her life (church, we have people come over a lot, etc) and she warms up to everyone after some time. I think when she's out, she just takes on the observer role more.

@bhbee: @Mamaof2: @snowjewelz: thank you! This makes me feel better. Is it because of shyness? Or just overall not wanting to talk?

DD1 is 28 months and has been in daycare since 10 months. She def talks way more at home... Teachers mostly knows that she knows everything since she follows all directions, and if you ask her something she will answer. Her personality is just more of an observer in public settings. I hope she can build trust with her teacher and at least respond! I

I'd say give it time. My 2yo was extremely verbal at home and with me, but also shy. They barely knew she could talk at daycare! (She was there from 18m to about 26m before we moved.) The next year she did 2 day preschool and I remember them saying "she never says much but boy does she like to talk if we ask about her new baby brother" 😀😀 and by 3.5 she was taking way more at school. I think she's the extreme you probably just need time!

I will start this off by saying we've had a lot of changes in our family, we changed from a nanny share to a daycare, we moved, and I'm due with baby #2 in June, and I know that's a lot for anyone, let alone a toddler.

But at home, our daughter is a chatter box. She speaks in sentences. She tells us what she wants to eat. She sings, she counts, she tells us when she has to potty, etc.

I just found out at daycare today that she's completely nonverbal. Hasn't said a single word. Doesn't tell them anything, doesn't sing, doesn't talk to the other kids, doesn't tell them when she has to potty, nothing. She's been there for a little over a month.

Should we be concerned? Is she just being shy? Stubborn? Give her some more time? Is there anything we can do to encourage her to speak more in school?
