I’m usually not too concerned about height/weight as both my kiddos are quite tiny, but I think it’s worth a second opinion if he’s that small and significantly smaller than his peers.

I give my nearly 3 year old love child shakes which are similar to pediasure and I have gieven her pediasure in the past. I know they’re not fabulous, but the quantity of food consumed is so little and if offered a “chocolate milk” it is usually happily chugged so I like them for days when there hasn’t been a lot of food eaten. I’m still not entirely convinced there isn’t a digestive problem of some sort because a few bites of anything will be consumed and I hear “my tummy hurts or my tummy can’t fit anymore”. In the past month or two I have noticed that she is finally starting to fill out and I’m feeling more relaxed about weight gain. I mix in butter with my kids’ pasta and avocado in smoothies and feed them 10% fat yoghurt and homo milk. I also do a lot of fake meat products as snacks. We’re vegetarian and they gobble up fake hotdogs and ham slices which have good protein levels and that helps with weight gain.

@tiramisu: They are hard to find! I ended up ordering through jet.com b/c they are in no physical stores near me and Amazon's prices are sky high. Ped said she doesn't really NEED it, but it helps us feel better that we're beefing her up as much as possible...

@snowjewelz: oooh I've never heard of ensure clear. I asked our ped about pediasure but he didn't think we needed it. I seriously think we need some kind of boost at this point though so I'll ask him about the clear version. I feel like hes almost losing weight. I'm glad your DD eats well and you didnt need more testing.

@jape14: he doesn't like bars but will eat belvita bites. Somehow with the bar he just crumbles it up and sprinkles it around lol. Maybe I'll try some different flavors. The kid is so picky maybe I just had bar flavors he didn't like.

@peaches1038: yeah the dr said hes moving around and is so active too that why hes not gaining. But his height is barely budging too. His drs said hes following his own little curve, but I'm still so worried that hes not getting nutrients or something that's why he's so small.

@Sweetpea87: how much olive oil do you add in? My son eats those apple sauce pouches so should I just add in a little and shake it up? For some reason I'm picturing a liquidy oily mess, but maybe I'm thinking of adding too much oil lol.

@jennlin821: he does not like avocados but hopefully I can mask it in a smoothie! Yep I'm still giving him whole milk yogurt (yobaby) and whole milk to drink. I havent tried looking up his numbers by his adjusted age recently. I guess I notice how tiny he is when he plays with friends who are a year younger and all about the same height. Plus he can still fit in his infant bucket seat. Maybe I'll make an appointment with the ped again or get another opinion, since hes not really growing taller either.

My guy is almost 3 and has barely gained any weight (mayyyybe 1-2 lbs) since he turned 2. He has grown taller though. I think it’s oretty normal for their weight gain to really slow down

Does he like bars at all? My 14mo is pretty picky but she randomly loves larabars and depending on the variety they can be calorically dense. (We found out she liked them bc she stole a bite from DH so maybe find a variety you like and see?)

My 20 month old has barely gained weight since she was 12 months old. At one point we were doing monthly weigh in's and ultimately decided she doesn't need additional testings done.

She drinks Ensure clear (we dilute it). She hated the shakes but our ped told us about the clear juice kind! We use avocado oil for cooking, whole milk yogurt, etc. She eats really well and I'm convinced she is just very slow growing so I stopped worrying AS much.

Does he like avocados? and are you giving him full fat yogurt?

But I think that if your pediatrician is not concerned, then you shouldn't be either. Could you compare his height and weight to his adjusted age? (I think I have the lingo right - his adjusted age would be from his due date? So how does he compare to 14-18 mo old?) that might make you see things from a different light.

Also, once toddlers reach 1 yr, they tend to stop gaining weight as fast. My did has been hovering around the same weight for the past year, but has grown about 6 inches taller.

If you are concerned that you pediatrician is not concerned, then get a second opinion!

ok. I think I've covered everything, haha!

@Sams Mom: thanks! I'll try some of those recipes. I totally forgot about adding avocado or sunbutter to his smoothies. Good idea! This is new territory for me.. my older LO eats almost everything and has always been fairly chunky.

Put whipping cream in his milk and olive oil in his applesauce. Mine doesn’t notice the olive oil at all. But buy an extra light tasting one, cuz it doesn’t have the strong flavor.

@tiramisu: Maybe you can sneak stuff into his smoothie? That seems to be the easiest thing he loves that could probably hide some serious calories.

My son is a little over 2 and has barely gained any weight in the last year. I've brought it up to our ped multiple times who isnt too concerned, but I'm still freaking out. He's so skinny and short! Granted he was a micro preemie, but he is currently less than 0% on the growth chart for height and barely there for weight.

Any magic fatty foods I can give him? Or sneaky feeding tips to get more calories in the little guy? Hes super picky so it doesn't help the situation. He'd live off icecream, yogurt, smoothies and fruits if he could. I'm so exhausted from meal times being such a battle.
