Why not just find something on there that has a "Buy it now" option? Then you don't have to deal with bidding and competing with people. eBay has everything, there has to be something you would like!

I agree with Smurfette. You could save them to buy Christmas presents. I know that doesn't help you at the moment, but it will in the long run.

I've bought a lot of stuff on Ebay and don't think i've every bought something "auction" style. Ebay is just another way for companies to host a online storefront - it doesn't have to be an auction.

I bought home renovation stuff there, there are lots of practical things... like, if your husband's car needs parts because of his commute, you can buy all sorts of car parts there (I just bought a headlight for my car)

Ebay, like amazon, also has a large food selection. You could buy some of your pantry staples to help keep your grocery bill down (cereal, pasta, etc)

Also - i'm not sure how ebay gift cards work, but is there any chance you can load the balance on your paypal account? (you may have to create one anyway when you sign up for ebay) You can use paypal to pay for almost anything online, sometimes including bills if your area does online bill pay. And i bet you can buy gift cards with paypal money. But again, i'm not sure if ebay gift cards can be paypal money...

There are a lot of things on ebay now that aren't auction style and are more of just a store front. I think the last thing I bought on ebay was undershirts for DH. There are "useful" items that you may actually need if you need anything material at all.

You could see if a friend or co-worker would be interested in buying the gift cards from you. I feel like if you sell them elsewhere, you won't get as much money for them. Alternatively, you can actually buy gift cards on ebay itself, so maybe find one you'd use for everyday things (like Target or something) and basically trade them that way.

Maybe use the cards to buy something off eBay for cheap and resell for profit locally? For example, once I bought a ring for $500 off eBay. I had it professionally appraised and the value was over $5,000.

Does half.com take eBay gift cards? I know they used to be owned by eBay. It's not an auction site so you might be more comfortable using it. I have relatives who specifically want me to use gift $$ on stuff for me (not bills), so it could be she was just trying to be "nice" and make sure you got stuff for yourself.

@Skadi: lots of stores are now on eBay. Babies R Us is just one of them. We bought some of J's gear with PayPal funds on their eBay store.

eBay started to lure retailers to compete with amazon. So there are a ton on there, drugstores, etc.

That's annoying, as much as the thought counts. U specifically said money is tight and she give u eBay cards? I agree w above, visa or cash would have been more convenient. Or Amazon for me! Next time, I'd specify cash! Lol.

I agree; you may be pleasantly surprised by what you can find on Ebay. However, I too, would have preferred a Visa gift card or cash! I'm not sure if you're interested, but I'd look into selling clothes, books, home goods, electronics, etc on Ebay and using the gift card to pay for the seller fees. It's an "easy" way to make some pocket change.

@Skadi: I like to look there before anywhere else first to price compare. I bought our duvet covers and my diaper bag from eBay. I've bought kids clothes and Halloween costumes from there too. Hopefully you'll be able to find something you need with your giftcards! eBay has a huge range of things.

I guess it's just that I can't think of many material things we need--we are just overwhelmed with bills (electric, rent, cost of gas on DH's commute, etc.). It feels almost like I told someone our basement was flooding and they bought me a really expensive umbrella.

I guess you're right that I could hold onto them so we when we do need something material we could use them...although I am terrified we will lose them and DH thinks we should sell them so we can use the money for more pressing matters.

You can find plenty of things on eBay. If you don't need them now, I would save them for when you need something. They have lots of fixed price auctions (eg. Not an auction) so you don't need to participate in the competitive part if you don't want to.

My MIL asked what I wanted for my 30th birthday and I said, "Money! We're pinching pennies since they cut back DH's hours, and our apartment is too small to add much more to it."

When I opened my birthday card, I found two $100 eBay Gift Cards. I thanked her, because that's the way I was raised, and my DH said, "You don't have an eBay account, do you?" and I stammered, "Uh, no...I've never shopped on eBay." My MIL then exclaimed that I'd find all sorts of things on there that I'd like. It's the thought that counts, right?

So, the bottom line is that the gift cards are non-refundable. And to be honest, I don't like eBay. I just don't like the competitive nature of it. And as I said...and MIL should know...our finances are way too tight to spend $200 on random things on eBay.

The problem with selling them is, it seems like people would assume it was a scam of some sort. Maybe Craig's List? Any other ideas? Should I just swallow hard and try to find something on there to spend it on? What would you do?
