@looch: That's correct, you have to reinstall with the belt when you exceed the latch weight limit for your vehicle (which may be less than the new max limits). Once you reach them I personally would move to just the seatbelt as there's no way to ensure the weight distribution between the belt & latch wouldn't exceed the latch limits. Idk much about the new seat design but I'd definitely talk to a tech (or a couple since not all techs are as up to date or informed as others) before installing it that way.

@mrs. bird: At the same time. Britax redesigned the Frontier to be able to use both LATCH and the seat belt.

Apparently, the seat was redesigned because parents were having issues with the seat belt position, so it was redesigned to be able to leave the child in a 5 point harness longer.

@looch: just to clarify, when you say, 'uses both LATCH and the seat belt in order to provide the maximum weight usage on the seat', do you mean at the same time or that is has the ability do be installed with a seat belt or with latch?

most convertible seats with higher weight limits have the option to use LATCH or seatbelt to install, but then are installed with the seatbelt once they reach the LATCH limit (check your car manuel, depending on the year it could have a different limit, my old volvo had LATCH before it was required, but it had a lower limit than the mandatory LATCH that came out right after). some newer boosters use latch to secure the booster to the car, but then use the seatbelt to restrain the child. you should be able to use your seat until LO reaches the height limit (will probably outgrow it before 70lbs though), you'll just install it with the seatbelt instead of LATCH. LATCH isn't any safer or better, it is there to make it easier, but the seat will be as safe when installed correctly using the seatbelt.

@kiddosc: Ok great! I had told my husband last night that the seat in our car was good up to 70 pounds, and it is, but just not in it's current installed method.

We are getting the new Britax Frontier for my mom's car, that installs with both LATCH and the seat belt, so that's what brought this all up. In that seat, you can use both.

@looch: Most seats do not allow for them to be used together because it makes the seat too rigid, and the seat is designed to flex and move just a bit in a crash. ETA: seats that specifically say that you can use both are OK to use both.

You can use JUST the seat belt, without LATCH once you've surpassed the weight limit though.

Yes, I think you can then use the seat belt, but I can't find the manual on line to see if you can use a combined LATCH and belt install like you can on the new Britax Frontier.

I have heard this too. But can't you just install with the seat belt then?

@runsyellowlites: So let me understand the math, if you don't mind....

Seat weighs 19.5 pounds
Kid weighs 32 pounds
Combined weight is 51.5 pounds
Seat is installed front facing, with LATCH and the top tether
This combination is okay, up until my son reaches 45.5 pounds, NOT 70 pounds.

The new limits across the board is max 65 combined pounds. Where it used to be all cars were different, some having been more & I think some advised less.

I went to a carseat demo a few months ago, and they did mention that LATCH regulations have changed recently (though I don't know if it was for 2014). The tech I talked to there said that if you're unsure about the weight limit to install with a seatbelt.

I was in BRU the other day, looking for a new car seat for my son. The woman was showing me the latest Britax Frontier, which uses both LATCH and the seat belt in order to provide the maximum weight usage on the seat.

From what I understood, LATCH alone is only effective up to a certain weight (seat and child combined), so that means high weight limit seats without the LATCH/belt combo are effectively worthless...this worries me because while my Britax is good until 70 pounds, accouting for the weight of my son and the seat, we're probably already butting up to the edge of being able to use the seat! I thought I could use that seat until he was 70 pounds.

I realize this sounds completely disjointed, but I am trying to get some information on the current weight limit for LATCH. I think it might be around 60 pounds.

Anyone?
