@MenagerieMama: I hadn't thought of it in terms of avoiding the power struggle at this stage too. That's a definite perk!

@KNS: Thanks for the advice on using the little potty. We were able to pretty much skip it all around with my older one, and I was hoping to do the same this time through if we were able to wait until she was older. But I think the small potty seems pretty necessary when they're this little. Now if only I can keep my four year old away from the little potty...she has been begging for that thing back since we packed it up over a year ago!

@MenagerieMama: I agree that earlier potty training can avoid some of the power struggles you might get as they get older. I can't even imagine how hard it might have been if we waited until my older was 3!

@caitcat: I will say that we used a small potty and I think that if you potty train younger when the kids are smaller that is probably helpful so they don't get freaked out over the big potty. Our daughter was pretty ok with the big potty when we were out but at home it gave her a lot of autonomy to be able to go by herself a bit more on the little potty.

My oldest pottied trained by 23 mo, mostly self directed! She was randomly really into it and we just went with it. We never had constipation issues at all because she was so enthusiastic about getting her poop in the potty - to this day (4.5 yo) we call her a "super pooper" because she poops several times a day in unbelievably vast quantities for such a little person  Her little sister is 21 mo old and has super sensitive skin, she gets a rash really easily and we actually have to restrict some of her fav fruits because she will instant rash. So we're trying to potty train early too (also I'm due with #3 this summer and don't want 2 in diapers!). We've been having her sit on the little potty when big sister does and she's peed in it a couple times! So we will see how it goes. I think earlier potty training actually helps avoid some of the power struggle aspect that is more present with later toddlerhood.

@thepaperbutterfly: This is so helpful - thank you! I think one of our biggest problems with my older daughter was not addressing constipation before or early on in the potty training process. We don't have the same struggles with my younger one, so we're at least starting in a more stable place.

I hear you on taking her out in public! I think that's a big part of what's stressing me about this. My older daughter skipped the little potty entirely (and could hold pee all day long because she was that stubborn about it!) so I never really stressed about taking her out and about because chances are, she'd never even ask to go! But it's a different ballgame with my younger one.

Thanks for sharing your experience so far. It's encouraging to hear, and I hope it continues to go well for you!

I just potty trained my 25 month old, and it went much better than expected. I was going to potty train her sooner but I had a baby a few months ago, and my mom told me that it would be wise to wait until the baby was a few months old. I followed the, "Oh Crap," method. I think potty-training is different for every kid, but it worked really well for my daughter. She says that the golden age to train kids is 20-30 months, so that's why I decided to start when my daughter was 25 months. My mom said I was potty trained at 15 months, so I figured I was a bit late to the game. . .

On the first day she had several accidents, but was already self-initiating by the end of the day. On the second day she was really upset and wanted her diapers back.. Poor thing was scooting around the house on her butt because she had to pee so bad but didn't want to use the potty :( She finally did, and things got better from there. We started her naked, and after a full day without accidents we put her in pants for half a day. When she had an accident in pants, she was half naked again and then when we tried the pants again she had no problems with it.

I took her to daycare a week later (kept her home for a week since I'm on maternity leave) and she had no accidents on her very first day! She hasn't had any pee accidents for a long time. She is pretty good about pooping on the potty. Part of her problem is related to past constipation issues (it would get so bad the poop was stuck in her anus and we had to use a suppository), so she has a hard time knowing when she is about to poop. She's on Miralax now and a high fiber diet. She sits on the toilet for every toot though because she doesn't want to have an accident. Also, she has about 5-10 seconds to get to a potty once she says poop. I'd say she has about an 80% success rate for pooping in the potty, but the times she doesn't it's because she can't make it to the potty in time. Poor thing gets really upset about it too and starts crying. But it's only been a week and a half so far, so she's doing pretty good :)

I'm scared to take her out in public though. She's only used the little potty so far. I got a toilet insert with steps, but we haven't set it up yet. They have like foldable plastic inserts for public toilets, and I got her one of those, but she didn't want to sit on it yet.

I'd say it's worth a try. My recommendation though would be to fully commit to potty training if that's what you decide to do. My daughter goes to daycare Mon, Wed, and Friday, but I kept her home so we had 6 days straight of potty training practice. We never rewarded peeing in the potty, but when she poops in the potty she gets a small sucker because pooping is kind of traumatic for her. I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, so I've dealt with a plethora of constipation and diarrhea issues, so I know how much poop issues can suck.

It seems like the posters who all had kids with medical reactions or issues that might be helped by potty training had success. Maybe the discomfort of the repeated infections will give your LO different motivation than your older child tompotty train and they’ll have a totally different experience.
Hope they get relief soon either way!

@caitcat: I am going through the reverse as DD was trained by 24-1/2 months but DS has maintained wearing diapers or pull-ups until 4! Everytime he becomes 85-95% potty trained , we have company (or travel) and all bathrooms are occupied when nature calls. He reverts back to "specialized undergarments" and refuses to use the potty. I am grateful that his system is not as sensitive to infection as his sister's (* probably the long urethra helps) and that he has not gone through the discomfort of a UTI or recurrent staph infection. I just remind myself that girls are easier to train and we were UBER-lucky DD was so receptive.
Best of luck and I am certain once your DD is fully trained, her issues will resolve. 🤞 :goodluck: 🙂

@Becky: I'm so glad to hear potty training cleared it up for your daughter - poor thing, that sounds so painful for her while in diapers.

And that actually sounds a lot shorter than how potty training my older one went, so it gives me such hope! :)

@peaches1038: They've swabbed it a few times along the way, all came back as MSSA. We've done neosporin in her nostrils (and all of ours) during a few rounds of trying to treat it, but we're doing batroban in her nostrils now. We've used it topically before, but maybe it'll make a difference this way.

@Kaohinani: Aww, poor kid! I'm glad potty training took care of the UTIs. And you give me some hope that it can be done at this age. Potty training was so, so awful with my first that I think I almost don't believe it can go okay!! It's encouraging to hear success stories.

@KNS: Thanks! It's encouraging to hear that it worked out - and that you'd do it again. I have a copy of that book around here somewhere...we ended up taking such a different approach with my older one that I never ended up reading it at he time. I could see it working with my younger one though. She's such a different kid!

Yes! DD1 was potty trained just shy of 24 months. I chalked it up to luck and figured with DD2 we’d wait until she seemed ready. However she had horrendous diaper rashes that would bleed. They required antibiotics and we even had to do cloth wipes because she reacted to literally every brand of natural or water wipes. She was 20 months when we started and it went really well. She basically self trained. She had a regression about a month in which I attribute to my mom insisting she wear training pants at her house every Thursday. We started in January and she was accident free in June (February and March she would have a few a week; June was when she would go a week without an accident; we haven’t night trained yet and don’t plan to soon; she will be 3 in April). We gave her fruit snacks every time she went potty and when she had regressions those first few months we would reintroduce them for a day or two. I feel like it sounds so long and drawn out but it didn’t feel like it when we were in it to me. It helps that we have old rugs and an old couch.

ETA it immediately put an end to the rashes.

I work with wounds and infections and am just curious if they have tested her for MRSA or have prescribed a cream (usually bactroban) to be used in her nostrils, rather than or in addition to a local cream or oral antibiotic?

@caitcat: While similar (but in no way the same), my DD suffered through repeated UTIs and bladder infections (* note - at the time she could only say, "Pee-pee hot" or "Pee makes me ouch!", so we only knew when it was too far along) while potty training at 23 mos. Our pediatrician put her on daily antibiotics (which upset me at first bc I feared she would grow a tolerance to them) and pressed for "active potty training" immediately. Within a month, we had her 90% trained (with occasional accidents AND no night training). Her symptoms cleared up. It was also noted that she had a minor allergy to both Pampers and Huggies which exacerbated her infection so we went organic and "allergen free" before moving on to panties with inserts.
Good luck :goodluck: with your LO and I hope you both find relief with this issue soon.

We potty trained my older daughter at around 22 months, used the oh crap method and it worked really well. We had tried around 18/19 months and that was too early but it was a breeze. I am hoping to do the same with our younger one at around the same age in a few months. We still had diapers at night/nap for awhile after that but I would take the plunge and try!

My 22 month old has struggled with recurrent staph infections in her diaper area for months. We've done a few courses of oral antibiotics when it's really flared up and became more widespread. We've also tried topical antibiotics, regular bleach baths, and tried a few other homeopathic remedies. But the infection just keeps coming back and has started spreading to her legs and torso when it flares up at this point. Our pediatrician told us today that he thinks we won't really be able to knock it until she is out of diapers at least in the daytime, and encouraged us to start potty training ASAP.

I'm so conflicted, because trying to potty train at 22 months feels like it goes against everything that I learned with my older daughter. We tried to start potty training with her sooner than she was ready around two and a half years old, and ended up with a host of problems until we backed off and let her take the lead (closer to age 3 1/2 or even a little after). Potty training wasn't on my radar with my younger one for at least another year, unless she gave me some big sign otherwise.

Does anyone have encouraging stories of potty training before 2, either out of necessity or because your kid was ready? Or, has anyone seen that potty training put an end to persistent diaper area staph infections? (That one is probably more of a long shot!) For what it's worth, she's a pretty cooperative kid, asks for a new diaper often and is very communicative in general...but ugh, I'm just not feeling ready for this. But on the flip side, I'm also anxious to stop the steady stream of antibiotics and manage her recurring breakouts better, if this would make a difference. Sorry this got rambly - thanks for any advice! :)
