Assuming a 2 hour party, people will start leaving around 4:30. So you'd want to do the cake around 4? It would seem silly to have food out when they arrive at 2:30, set out more food at 3:30 and then do the cake at 4. I'm with you in that I can't do a party without lots of food but I probably wouldn't do a full dinner for an early afternoon party. I realize that a 2:30 party is past lunch, but before dinner, but I can't have a party without lots of food. So if I have appetizers out before it starts what time would you put out the rest of the food (presumably dinner)? I don't want people to be leaving before I put out everything... and I need time to put out the cake. Would you just serve all food together??? </p>
