@maddyz: We got the Rubbermaid chip and dip platter from Walmart. Its like $4 but it has a lid, which is the gamechanger. I can load it up and then put it back in the fridge if they don't finish it. I use really easy food to put in the tray - baby carrots, Persian cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, string cheese or Babybels, turkey pepperoni, blueberries, apple slices, clementines - anything I can just huck in there usually is what wins out. I generally fill the center well with a carb or a crunchy thing (we've been transitioning to having all-natural pork rinds in there half the time over say, pretzels) to kinda lure them in. I find having lots of colors and textures really just makes them happy. I have also taken to just bringing the leftovers in the platter to the living room to nosh on during their little bit of TV time before bath and they have been finishing the dang thing off the last 3 nights!

@codeitall: YES! That was another gamechanger for DS1 - last year we planted a garden based on things he could pick and eat right away. So we planted super sweet cherry tomatoes, peas, green beans, cucumbers, and strawberries. He NEVER ate any of the veggies beforehand, but would stand there eating raw green beans and peas! He still doesn't like tomatoes (I think its just a personal preference), but he kept trying them over and over before spitting them out because he WANTED to like them, yanno? So we did the same this year and planted 3 raised beds of the same veggies hoping for DS2 to follow suit.

Oh! and two last ideas, I take my toddler shopping in the store and he gets to pick one produce item each time, usually it is apples, but he did pick bell peppers and actually try them! He also loved to pick food from the garden last year and I'm really expanding my garden this year to take advantage of that. He'd literally eat the zucchini like a large apple

Yep. My 3.5 yo still is like this. We did Early Intervention for sensory therapy to try to help with his diet. We met with limited success, he still won't combine textures (except syrup and pb) and refuses most wet things. He actually prefers veggies to fruit.

But carbs carbs carbs win the day for him, so we've transitioned to making whole wheat items and getting dried veggies he can snack on. Basically if he likes it, I try to find a way to make it healthier :silly:

Second others that if they're hungry and you leave fruit and veggies out they'll eat it eventually ;)

@Gingerbere I love the snack tray!! I find that if I put stuff like this out near them before dinner they will eat it and it helps them eat better at dinner. But as a working mom, it's almost impossible to get my act together to do this.

I also have found that moving dinner time 30 minutes earlier can help.

@gingerbebe: this is such a great idea! I’m going to try it!

My almost 3 year old also went through this phase. I’ve tried to just stick to offering healthy options and she is starting to come around. She will eat peas, green beans & broccoli now so I always keep some frozen vegs that I can microwave. She also stopped eating eggs. She has yogurt and fruit for breakfast, and a pb&j for lunch pretty much every day, and then eats with us for dinner.

Smoothies are a great idea. She loves them and I can sneak all kinds of greens and protein powder in there, she drinks it right up.

I have a 3.5 year old and a 2 year old. DS1 started rejecting foods he always ate about 6 months ago just like as part of being a threenager and DS2 went from eating everything to suddenly only wanting carbs around 18 months old. I was at my wits end because they were always howling about something at dinner time.

About a month ago I started filling a chip and dip bowl with different compartments with all sorts of different foods and slammed it down on the table. I served them whatever I decided to serve them for dinner and put a small portion on a plate, but otherwise the sides were whatever they chose to eat out of the platter. DH and I would also pick out of the platter and I swear something about the ability to choose made a HUGE HUGE difference for my kids and they started eating things and trying things again. I also just pack their lunches with what’s in the tray.

I try to always have at least one thing I know they like on the platter and DH and I make loud Mmmmmm noises while we eat. We have also tried to cut out snacking as much and have been trying to eat down our hoard of processed items in the fridge and freezer. We are not buying more of a lot of these things and without those around as options they are just having to eat the fruits and veggies.

DS2 literally did not eat any veggies a month ago and now eats raw carrots, tried salad and kale chips (before spitting them out but at least tried), and now regularly eats string cheese, steak, and hard boiled eggs. He also only ate like 3 kinds of fruit before (apples, oranges, bananas, sometimes blueberries) and now eats melons, pineapple, blackberries, and tried strawberries a few times.

DS1 now eats steamed broccoli, asparagus, kale chips, and cuts of meat which he never ate before. He also tried smoked salmon and liked it!

Maybe try making a smoothie and throw some veggies, fruit and protein powder in? My 2 year old loves quinoa, have you tried that? It has a decent amount of protein too.

This is my 2.5y DD. She’s so tiny to begin with and she is so picky, sometimes refusing things before she will even try them.
She likes: Cheerios (no milk), PB toast, Mac n cheese, carrots (sometimes), deli meat (sometimes), cottage cheese, rice, tortellini, other kinds of pasta. She loves carbs. I always offer her a bit of everything we’re eating but she will rarely eat it. I think it’s a phase!!

Wow I could have written this myself! My 2.5 year old is the SAME way! I’m able to get yogurt and a fruit in him for breakfast. But other meals he only wants applesauce and snacks ugh. Sometimes we get chicken nuggets, cheese sticks, PBJ, grilled cheese, ravioli, hot dogs with beans in him. Pouches are the only veggies I get in him these days. He will push everything away and cry he doesn’t want it. I’ve found sausages that have veggies in them and tell him they are hog dogs and sometimes that works lol.
Following in case anyone has solutions :meh:

My 2 y/o dd is about the same but to make matters worse she is allergic to peanuts so I can’t count on pbj as a source of her protein and she might have some other allergies that haven’t been confirmed yet.
She’s all about carbs and fruits but I try to shred up chicken as fine as I can with kitchen shears and stuff a little of it in quesadillas. If I put too much she will notice and say meat and not eat it. She will eat chicken nuggets and fish sticks but I feel terrible giving it to her but then again she needs some Protein.
The veggies we can rely on her eating are edamame beans and corn. Sometimes I can get away with putting peas in quesadillas too.
She will eat plain pasta that I dish out from chicken veggie noodle soup so I guess there’s some broth with a minuscule amount of nutrients.
And she also eats the Gerber baby raviolis maybe once a week or two weeks which I know is so processed but again where else will she get protein and iron.
Sometimes she’ll also eat smushed up very finely teriyaki salmon mixed in rice. And sometimes I can mix in some sunbutter in her oatmeal. I try to make her a healthier French toast at home so she gets some eggs in the bread but she won’t eat scrambled eggs but that might be due to her egg white allergy.

This sounds like my son, the majority of his dinner options are PB&J, pizza, grilled cheese, rigatoni and red sauce. I can sneak a chicken burger or some sliced turkey into the grilled cheese, and can feed him meat sauce instead of red sauce so that's where he gets protein. Also chicken sausage. Will yours eat hummus? That's a good one too.
Also, we moved dinner earlier to like 4:15 because he would start snacking and then not be hungry for dinner, and now he eats a lot better.

DS eats pretty much the same as yours, plus/minus a few things you listed. I feel like our saving grace is he will eat avocado toast! I have switched all of the carb things to whole grain when possible. We always put the meat and veg on his plate but he never eats it. And we always offer new things but he never eats it. He use to eat really well as a young toddler. Our Dr. at his 3yr check up just said keep offering and putting the stuff on his plate. She said if we can get some pouches in that have vegies that would be great. But she wasn't overly concerned and said its just part of their showing control. He seems to be adding a couple things in very slowly. Mostly green things cause that is his favorite color. So over the last 5 months we have added green apple, green grapes, and he has eaten a couple cuties thanks to the babysitter. These are still not something he will eat daily but maybe once a week. But protein forget it not happening.

Hi guys! Happy almost Mother's Day if I don't get the chance to post again before then.

I feel like I'm at my wits end with my 2.5yr old boy. He is beyond picky now and will only eat a handful things. He used to eat everything and now... not so much. He won't eat meat or chicken anymore or even veggie burgers. He used to love eggs two months ago and now stopped eating those too. He really only eats these things; PB&J on wheat, pancakes, fruit pouches, yogurt, crackers, pretzels, cheerios or cereal, cheese pizza, hash browns (French fries), goldfish, milk, bagels, and croissants. ALL BREAD related items besides the fruit pouches/yogurt. I am seriously embarrassed because I did not raise him to eat like this and we offer a ton of choices that he constantly refuses. Is this a phase? Any suggestions on how to get him to like more options again?
