@Kemma: she's usually flailing her arms and kicking. When I try to hold her she pushes me away. When I ignore her she screams louder. Redirecting worked when she was younger but not so much anymore. She's become more stubborn and defiant!

What does she do if you scoop her up in a big hug and hold her tight? Or can you redirect her?

Can you give her something safe to scratch or hit - like a pillow with scratchy fabric on it? As long as she's just getting her legs red and not drawing blood or something, I wouldn't worry. A lot of toddlers go through a mild self-injury phase like banging their heads or hair pulling during tantrums.

DD threw an epic tantrum last night. Screaming on the floor and profusely scratching her legs until they were all red. I'm really not sure how to best handle these high emotion tantrums. When she was younger, distraction or letting her cry a bit would work. But now, the tantrums are so much more intense and lasts longer. And the scratching it entirely new. How do you handle tantrums? Does your LO scratch themselves when they are going nutty? How would you stop it if they were? I tell her to stop or I grab on to her hands but that just pisses her off more!
