Well this morning she started sobbing when we went to get out of her night nappy and commando/with undies - said she just wanted her nappy. I don't want her being distressed by it, so I think we're going to just leave it a few weeks, keep giving her the option of weeing in the toilet, and try again later.

Thanks for all the advice. x

Similar to others, although my guy is only 22 months, we've had more success when we just tell him to go during certain times in the day. We're having a harder time with poop accidents but hoping that he will start to be more consistent on his own over time.

@jaguar: oh yeah, you can't go out bottomless :silly: I'd just do a bottomless boot camp for a day or 2 and stay at home to see if it helps her. If not, maybe go back to diapers for a little bit to give her a break?

We went through this. Once the novelty and excitement wore off she regressed. I had to rephrase it a bit....instead of asking "do you have to go potty?" (The answer was always "no") ...I now say: "It's lunch time, time to go potty" or "we are heading outside to play, time to go potty". Much less resistance from her.

I personally would take her out of undies and do bare bottom for a while. DS had a little more trouble with undies and we had to back up a step to no pants and he got the hang of it again. He also did well with pants but no undies.

So if she keeps asking for undies, do I keep her in them?

Or alternatively, if she asks for nappies, do I go backwards and put them on her?

I just can't figure her out. We're all a bit exhausted!

Potty training is just a bit of a rocky road in general. I wouldn't call it a regression. Just keep at it! Consistency is the most important thing.

Our pediatrician said that for a lot of kids, pottying is a control issue. It's one of the few things they have total control over, so it takes them a while to relearn their habits.

We've got toys and books and everything in reach of the potty! Gah.

I think that's the problem, the urge thing.. she just doesn't seem to get that part yet.

@jaguar: damn! Do you think it's s control thing? My only other thought is that we put looks of books next to the potty and I let her take whatever toys she wants so that even if nothing comes right away, she's ok sitting there for 5 minutes or so.

@jaguar: it might just take a while for her to develop new "habits" around toileting and to coordinate the urge with actually going to the toilet. Would it help to have a toileting schedule like going before mealtimes, before outings and before bed etc?

@Madison43: Oh, that's good to know! It feels like a regression, only in that she was making it to the potty, telling us when she needed to go.. and then stopping cold turkey, back in undies. I will try being a little more firm about activity changes - that sounds like something good to try. Thanks!

I wouldn't say it's a regression at all - just still part of early potty training. My LO is a bit younger at 2 years, 3 months but she went through a few days where she acted like the potty was torture and was definitely holding her poop. No accidents, but wouldn't go at all and was obviously holding it. We did two things - first, before she wanted to move to the next activity (reading, taking out dress up clothes, etc...) she had to sit on the potty. I didn't force her to go to the potty, but was firm that we couldn't start the next thing until she did. Second, we went completely bottomless for a morning. It kind of forced the issue because she didn't want to have an accident in the open (I guess it's not as embarrassing to have an accident in your undies) and I just watched her like a hawk and at the first sign she needed to go, I ran her to the potty. Now, she's back to doing great. I still prompt her every hour or so to be safe, but she's on track and self initiating 90 percent of the time, so I'm happy.

My son kind of lost interest after the novelty of the situation wore off. He goes to daycare and one of the big there was that he didn't want to leave his toys to go to the bathroom, he preferred peeing in his pants when faced with the prospect of losing his toy to a classmate.

At home, it's been hit or miss. We're still doing a lot of prompting. I'm hoping that the more he's around kids at daycare who are potty trained, the better he'll do overall.

Miss G will be 3 in March, and we've just started toilet training with her, as she was showing signs of being dry and a general interest in the whole thing.

We went cold turkey into underwear (trying a rough version of the 3-day, knowing it may take a little longer) - day 1, accidents, as expected. day 2, one in potty, some accidents. day 3, all in potty! We thought that was awesome, and just continued on as normal.

Except... day 4 came and she regressed. All accidents, all in pants. Same for day 5 and day 6. We managed one yesterday, but the rest of the time, she is just refusing to go... outright refusing. She's still dry for long periods of time (as in, her regular nappy/wee is every few hours) - but I don't want her to be holding, and she swears she's not, she's just dry.

Any ideas on why she would regress this early? We considered just going back to nappies and trying again later, but she's telling us she likes undies - so I'm a bit puzzled about what's going on.

We have a sticker chart incentive, and little treats as well - but even those don't seem to be helping.
