I was just saying that DS2 (born in Sept) has had a runny nose everyday of his life. Poor guy. We also went to the ER for a fever at 10 days old. That was super stressful but passed quickly (DS1 also had a fever that lasted less then 24 hours). DS1 has had a fever one other time and DS2 managed not to get it. I nurse, but dont trust that to protect him from everything, it's not magic. DS2 is out and about with DS1 and the nanny so it's bound to happen....

We just had our third in August right as everyone was going back to school (I missed my daughters first day of K). The baby started daycare January 4th (she was 15w) right after the new year.

The baby hasn't been sick at all.

My 2nd and 3rd were born end of October. 2nd just got by with colds, 3rd had a high fever at a few weeks so we were in the hospital a couple days (he's fine) and then had a bunch of colds. He's breastfed.

I have a December baby and an older one in preschool. We've kept DS1 in school full time while I'm on maternity leave and DS2 already has his first cold. It's been pretty mild though. We just make sure we wash hands often.

DD#3 was born in mid-October and has been sick (mostly just nasty colds, but one hospitalization in November due to suspected pneumonia) on and off all winter; her pediatrician basically just told me to expect the colds as par for the course with two older sisters (2.5 and 4.5) in school. I breastfeed, and she still gets sick. I wouldn't necessarily not TTC though - DD#2 has a May birthday and caught a nasty nasty virus that originally looked like meningitis (but thankfully wasn't) and required a week long hospital stay at two months old....in July! So babies can get sick anytime, or they can not get sick at all!

I'm definitely freaking about this. My lo1 who was born early September was sick sooooo much more often than my lo2 who was born end of February. Lo3 is due end of sept and at the peak of cold/flu! Ugh!!! I nursed both for well over a year and a half and still had tons of illness in my older one.

I guess I keep having babies at maybe the end of flu season? I had 2 marchies and then a baby 2 weeks ago. I always go out right after I give birth and haven't had any sicknesses yet knock on wood! But then again I find that my kids mostly get sick in October/November/December. So maybe I would avoid that chunk of time! Holidays do it for us!

@yerpie110: You did well then!! Nice! Trying to keep the older one quarantined was basically impossible for us, but I also was unable to nurse my son since I had other health issues going on at the same time. But will definitely make all efforts to nurse if we have a third.

My second came in January and honestly it's not something I'd recommend. DD1 has been sick with high fevers almost the whole time and it's been super stressful. Despite my best efforts and extreme germ paranoia DD2 caught a cold. Fortunately no fever, but I'm counting down the days until we don't have to worry about that dreaded 100.4 mark.

DD2 was born in December and she has only been sick once with norovirus (currently 14.5 months). DD1 has been sick a few times since DD2's birth (as have I, DH, and our nanny), but I'm just vigilant with hand washing, disinfecting, quarantining as necessary, and I'm still nursing. I think we've been lucky!

My third for sick as a NB and it sucked but was doable. What was really hard was sickness that we all had before her birth.
Though I have three January babies and it obviously didn't bother me enough to do it differently.

I would try to avoid it, but not go to great lengths to do so. I breastfed, and my second was still hospitalized for RSV at 4 weeks old (he was a January baby). At the hospital, almost everyone I encountered mentioned how common this was for second + babies. He does not seem to have any lasting effects, though.

I really worry about this after my experiences at work seeing so many seriously ill newborns from their preschool aged siblings shared germs. But, we are still TTC and if I get pregnant in the next few months, which I HOPE FOR SO MUCH, it'll be a winter baby :)

Battling this right now! LO2 brings home everything from preschool and is all over the baby regardless of how hard I try to keep them separated. Baby has been sick 3 or 4 times in 5 months despite breastfeeding! LO2 was born in the spring and LO1 was not in preschool and he was barely sick his first two years.

@Truth Bombs: not sure. With my last I ended up on meds and just not very healthy by the end of my pregnancy so I couldn't/chose not to with the advice of my doctors. But I'd like to. I still think the illnesses will be a factor though!

@winniebee: my second was born in 2015! :silly:

@bhbee: I think it may have been that it was dd's first time in childcare and she hadn't been sick much before that. I bubble wrapped her as a baby!

@travellingbee: Glad you didn't all get the flu. It's so hard not being able to tend to the sick one as normal but I guess that's part of being a growing family.

With three January babies I can say that it sucks but it's not a deal breaker. My second got her first runny nose at 5 days old and the twins are currently battling their first runny noses at about a month old. No fevers though. I really think nursing and frequent hand washing really helps.

Probably not the norm because I feel like we somehow have just been crazy lucky. But...
My husband works in a pediatric office, my daughter started a preschool two days a week (previously was in a small in home, this is her first time in a setting with that many kids), and our baby was born in August- he's had one bad cold and one mild cold. And that's it.

We didn't try for any specific timing, but I'm happy that #3 will be here in June/July. DS2 got quite sick his first winter - bronchiolitis at 11 weeks old. That's actually the last time that I remember DS1 being very very ill (he was then 2.5). I got a sinus infection and it was so difficult to care for a very sick young baby! He had other colds and virsuses that winter. I do remember 2015 was a really bad year for cold and flu season!

Do you intend to nurse? That would make a difference to me because it will help with protection since he'll get antibodies through your milk to germs you are exposed to. Both of my babies were late Nov babies. When my son was 3 months old, my daughter tested positive for the flu. It was certainly scary but we got her on Tamiflu immediately and my husband took care of her while I sequestered myself with the baby and nursed him like crazy and he was totally fine. He definitely got little colds sooner than my first did because he was exposed to the germs she brought home from daycare, but he didn't catch anything serious.

If it sticks we are having #3 in October. I'll have one in kinder and a 2yo. It definitely worries me, but since we haven't always had easy ttc we basicslly just started trying when we were ready. Maybe try for a different starting month but if it ends up being a winter baby just don't worry about it? My second was born in January while sister was in preschool and he didn't get very sick until past 6 months anyway.

Would you avoid this?

I kind of want to if we have a third, after having had an October baby (RIGHT after DD started preschool/childcare for the first time) as my second child. But then I kind of like that my kids will be older in their grade, I like that our whole family has birthdays near each other, and we had a relatively difficult time ttc#2 so I don't really want to worry about the timing so much. It's just that newborn part when they can't have a flu shot and they are so vulnerable that kind of bums me out. DS did have a short hospital stay for fever as a newborn (but he was fine.)

Not sure where to put this so I'm sticking it under TTC but it might belong somewhere else!!
