It's usually best to trust your instincts. I've been a 911 call taker, and while I'd usually say that's not a 911 type situation, if you're in a smaller town where the non-emergency closes at night and it's your only option, if you find something suspicious, you very well could be right. Next time (if there is one) if possible try to get a plate though! Good to know if the vehicle is associated to people known to commit offences, and make a record of odd occurrences.

I haven't witnessed anything strange being up all night, but beind home in the day is a whole new perspective. I was taking LO out for a walk a few weeks ago, and three of my neighbours were down stairs of our apartment complex looking like they were looking for something. I asked what was up, and they said they'd all been called on the buzzer by someone claiming to be the police that needed to be let in. We have a policy that we're not to buzz in people that we don't know so they'd elected to come down to let them in, but when they got down, nobody was there. I called the non-emergency line to see if any officers were dispatched to our building and they said no, so I made a report of the suspicious circumstance and that there was potentially someone who was potentially claiming to be an officer for a nefarious purpose that had been allowed in by someone else who just buzzed him up no questions asked.

Totally understandable. I'm paranoid about every running vehicle. It drives me nuts if someone pulls up next to me to park when I'm walking my dog after dark without even considering why I would not appreciate that. And I'm hyper aware of any vehicle I don't recognize parked by my house. That said, if I called the cops about a suspicious vehicle I would be laughed at. I'm lucky to get one responding officer an hour after reporting shots fired. New Orleans.... ugh.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: My mom and I always call the non-emergency line for suspicious activities including, but not limited to, cars in the neighborhood that don't belong. I see no harm in calling the non-emergency line.

I think you were right to call the police...if anything seemed out of the ordinary at night I would trust my gut and not take chances. We've called the police for similar incidents and they have always come to check it out and told us we were right to call.

I agree with PP's, I don't see this as something worth calling the police over? Maybe keep the window to your nursery closed..

When I was a teenager and hanging out with friends and didn't want to be at anyones parents house, we would often park places just to hang out and talk.. The fact that they're not sneaking around quietly shows me they're not doing anything. People who are scoping out houses to rob, dealing drugs, whatever are NOT calling attention to themselves. Maybe they were waiting on a friend?

I would and I have done the same thing- I grew up in the boonies, anyone who is out and about near houses at that time of night was up to something. Being a rural area, we had the same setup not to even bother with the non-emergency number and go straight to 911 (it's definitely different here in the city!)

I live on a private road....it's not a cul de sac where you can turn around, they would have to do it in someone's driveway and there are only 3 other houses. The two cars both parked right in front of my house on the curb behind our cat. If the heater in the house had been on, I definitely would not be able to hear the doors slam, and if i was sleeping i woudnt notice. At 2am I know our non emergency number actually doesn't work (theyre closed) and the recording tells you to call 911.

Oh man. So much crap happens on our street in the middle of the night in the summers.

We called 911 once, a few years ago, when some dude came to our door in the middle of the night and kept ringing the doorbell and when DH answered he asked for drugs and then pulled a gun on my husband.

We also called the non-emergency line once when a truck was left in the alley turned on ALL night in -40 weather. We think someone stole it and abandoned it there. weeeeird!

don't know that I'd call 911 for a car sitting out front my house though...

I wouldn't call 911 (because it's not an emergency at all), but maybe the non-emergency line if I felt really threatened/unsafe. The way you describe these occurrences would make me feel annoyed, but not like my safety was at risk.

In the summer I get kids setting off fireworks, drinking and smashing bottles on the bike path directly behind our parking. I've called the non-emergency line before for them to send an officer down the path (they send a cruiser driving down it, lol).
I hate the fireworks waking up DS, but I might have some PTSD hearing that stuff in my neighborhood.

The way I see it -- logically, I shouldn't be scared in this scenario. As @OpinionsLikeKittens mentioned, it's not like they are trying to be covert about being out there and most likely they don't think anyone lives in the house. But in the heat of the moment when it's 2 AM and I'm nursing my baby, I would totally be freaked out.

@Mae: agree...I guess I don't really get what is so threatening? Unless your house is the ONLY thing on that road, in which case I guess I agree it's a bit weird that a car would drive there and stop.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: I've called the non emergency line on a neighbor before.
We've lived here almost 5 years and I have only seen a man (40s?) come out of the house diagonal from me. My next door neighbor is gossipy and once told me he's got a teenage son whose girlfriend once set something on fire on their doorstep. WTF?

Anyway, two summers ago I started seeing tbis teenage boy go in & out of the house a lot. They're across the street and one door up, but I could hear the music & bass from his car. He and a friend used to sit in the car and do who knows what, but it was so loud a picture fell off my wall. My windows would vibrate. My other neighbor has a girl the same age as Chloe & we'd both complain that this douche would wake the girls up.

Then they started sitting in his driveway behindthe house. And all these people would come and go, all hours of the night, only when the dad wasn't home. We started smelling weed & suspected other drug use. We live in an otherwise quiet, family friendly neighborhood. I've witnessed he and his girlfriend having major screaming matches in the middle of a rainstorm. This girl ran down the street in the pouring rain. They're.. Special.

So yeah, I called the non-emergency line and they did dispatch an officer. Everything stopped for awhile but we will see what this summer brings.

Ugh, I hope it never happens again. Sounds so scary! :(((( Have you talked to a neighbor you trust about this to see if they've heard anything too?

Scary! Maybe the police need to patrol the area more frequently at night. Glad everyone's OK!

So my daughter has an infamous 2am bedtime, and a 2 hour put to bed process that precedes it that involves rocking and bouncing in the dark.

Many months ago I saw headlights light up the room in the middle of the night when i was nursing and i could hear a car running outside the house. It was summer and the windows were open in the room. I heard doors slam several times. There was two guys smoking cigarettes and talking loudly inside and the headlights were still on. I called 911. At one point they shut off the car. The cop came and spoke with them, and after some questioning they both drove off.

Tonight it happened again, I saw headlights on the main roadm heard a car drive down my little road that doesn't have a turnaround. I heard doors slam at least four times. I looked out the window to see two guys get out of the car, slam them closed and walk off briskly in different directions. I scrambled through the house trying to find the phone ith out turning on the lights, I found it after a minute and called 911. This time I woke up my husband (I hadn't last time bc I wanted him to sleep for work) to identify the car for me. By the time he got to the window he saw two men get into the car and drive off. He went to bed. I had to go rescue my daughter from a 2 minute sleep in her crib as she woke up crying when I had handed my husband the phone. I bounced her in the living room again then heard a car approach from far away. I went to the window and saw a cop car fly down the road. A few minutes later the cop drove back.

I don't know if these people are scoping out houses to rob, or there are drug deals at the school at2am that is half a block away.

I had been very sore after 2 hours of bouncing and wearing my daughter and had been tempted to finally just put her in her bed and let her cry, but I decided not to, I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason and this sure reenforced that.

Does anyone else witness weird things in the middle of the night due to your baby's sleep habits or nursing?
