There are awesome hotels with nice spas at both and good food and shops to visit. I'm from the South, so both cities are close to me. Not sure what region you're looking at. I'm trying to imagine reading a book by a Vegas pool and dudes are so freaking obnoxious when they see a woman traveling alone that it's hard to imagine having any peace. So I'd vote for somewhere without a lot of single people :) Or do it anyway but come prepared with your best "GO AWAY!" smile. I live in northern VA and work in DC, and it's definitely a great spot for a getaway. Depending on what you are drawn to, we've got a little bit of everything. Fine dining is awesome - I highly recommend checking out Rose's Luxury (which involves waiting in line but everyone who's been has said it's worth the wait) and Metier. Compass Rose is a great spot for international food. Tons of museums and outdoor spaces for sure. Georgetown is a great spot to wander around, shop, eat. Dumbarton Oaks is beautiful, Hillwood Museum/Estate. The options are endless. Let me know if you want more specific recommendations for what you want to do. I went to Maine for a solo trip last August and loved it. I love to drive and read, so I got a B&B on the coast, spent a day wandering around that small town, drove to another small town up the coast another day, did a drive to and from Acadia one day (~2 hours from where my B&B was). Subways are very easy. Newseum is a paid museum but sooo good. And I went to a popular, yummy pie place. Mostly savory. I'd have to look up the name. (*Dangerously Delicious Pies). It's apparently really interesting and not appropriate for littler kids. I love Jose Andres restaurants- Jaleo is my fave (tapas!). There are also a ton of cute little shops and restaurants in Alexandria (accessible by Metro). Basically I'd LOVE to do NYC for all the reasons everyone suggested, but I have family in the city who I couldn't not visit if I was there, and though it sounds selfish I want be totally on MY time ha. DC flights are super cheap and quick and there is so much to do and see I definitely won't get bored on my own! Any recommendations on where to stay/must-see's let me know, I'm going to do 2 nights 3 days (taking an early flight the first day so I get there by 9 or 10am).....now to decide when to go is the biggest question! I would probably go to a place that had some nice scenery/park areas to explore, but also had some museums. I really liked the Outer Banks when we went a few years ago. You have some history, with the Wright Brothers Memorial, Roanoke, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and other things like shopping, a wonderful little aquarium, and of course, the beaches. I would also love to go back to Acadia National Park at some point. That's a neat area too.
