I doubt many people go into it thinking "I want to show I have tons of money so I am going to have lots of kids" but I do think it sort of works out that way for some people in a backwards kind of way. A lot of people would have more kids if money was no object so it becomes the common thing in their social circle and next thing you know it's the popular choice and you're odd if you choose to have fewer kids.
