@SweetiePie: I agree with a lot of this!

What worked for us was allowing 1.5yo daughter to go naked outside and letting her wee on the lawn so she could see how toileting worked and one day I could see that she'd worked out how to control her wee (this all happened by accident, it was summer and we were just mucking around outside before bath time!). We then bought her a potty and once it got too cold to pee outside she started peeing on the potty at before bath time.

About nine months later (just after Christmas) Miss A decided she really wanted to wear the undies my Mum had given her for Christmas so I explained that if she wore undies she would have to use the toilet and away we went! At first we only wore undies at home and I bought some "special" pull-ups just for wearing if we went out but after a week we did a couple of practice play dates at a friend's house then just went for it.

Unfortunately for us it took another nine months before Miss A was confidently dry all day but this was mainly due to the arrival of her baby brother and the fact that toileting was the thing that regressed and she just didn't want to do it! Alexis is also the kind of child that if she doesn't want to do something then she'll absolutely dig her heels in and not do it until she wanted to!

@ineebee: I was the same. Didn't mind diapers at all! But now that he can hold his pee for a while and goes all by himself it's really easy.

@SweetiePie: I agree sometimes a diaper is easier haha. We still put on on our son for long car trips. I don't want to stop every hour to pee. Haha. So lazy 😂

@Mrs. Champagne: Very enlightening! Thanks! Way to hold out on the naps! That must've been a tough call, but it worked!

I am dreading this so much. I really don't mind the diapers at all! But I know we're gonna have to do it soon. Sigh!

@ineebee: just no pants. Naked. Then when we got more serious (trying a morning instead of just a short time) we did pants and no underwear. Pull ups are dumb. He treated them just like a diaper!

The only issue with the no underwear method is that now he's been trained for 6 months and just finally will wear underwear. Preferred going commando until this week, lol.

Pooping was dramatic just because he didn't ant to. So he would hold it until nap time when he had a diaper. So finally we just didn't let him nap until he went. He hated it and cried every time but then it clicked after about a week or two.

@Mrs. Champagne: I hadn't thought of doing it this way before! I really like it! So many people who decide not to go the 3-day route say they did something "gradual," but it's hard to know what that means (Are they in a diaper? Underwear? Pull-up?).

When you did the no-diaper time, did you have him in underwear/underwear+pants...? I feel like my son (26m) is ready to try, but I don't think he has the dexterity to pull up and down underwear or pants.

And what was dramatic about the pooping?

@Mrs. J: yeah for sure every kid is different! Mine shows tons of signs but he doesn't WANT to do it yet. So that's what I'm waiting for. If it doesn't happen by 3 I'll probably ask at his well visit what my options are. I know it's just her opinion, though, so I may still decide to do it at some point.
(Again, it's largely because I'm not that excited about it, lol).

@SweetiePie: see my kid was totally ready at 25 months, so it worked for us, no forcing, no bribing.

@macintosh: yes, you have to be home. My niece will be 3 in September and is still solidly in diapers, so no, I don't think it's weird. She's just not ready. My 21.5 month old is showing signs of readiness, so we might tackle it before the baby comes in July.

I'm just doing gradual. My son is 2.75 and he just peed on the potty about a month ago for the first time. Now he does it very occasionally and only with bribery.
It's slow going, but my Ped thinks that 3 day/Oh Crap is kind of a racket. I still get tempted to do it but she thinks it forces them into something they aren't necessarily ready for, which means more regressions and accidents. She waited till about 3 with her kids and she said once they stopped diapers they had zero accidents or regressions (daytime). That sound a lot more appealing to me.
She prefers patients to wait till they are clearly ready and showing their own interest, usually closer to 3. I still ask him all the time and try to bribe. Eventually I will do a reward chart (prob pretty soon). But I don't force it at all and I think I would only do 3 day method if he's a lot older and weren't getting anywhere.

Admittedly I'm not in a rush for it so it was kind of a relief when I heard her say to wait and let him take the lead. He only poops once a day or every other day. So one poopy diaper a day is nbd to me. And the idea of being out and about in the stroller or car and having to quickly find a bathroom sounds way worse than a diaper. 😂 So I'm half being lazy, half respecting my peds opinion.

ETA: want to further explain why she said it's a "racket". She thinks it works but only has long lasting effects if they are truly ready. She called it a racket because they don't really "market" it that way. They make it seem like a magic bullet for every kid at any time, so then parents do it when THEY are ready, not necessarily when the kid is ready. And that's why the kid ends up regressing.
I have no first hand experience but that reasoning makes sense to me. Plus, I don't wanna. 😬

We did gradual! It worked really well. I would do like 30 mins of no diaper time. Then maybe a morning. Starting last summer. He had accidents and was 2.25. Then at Christmas got more serious and had him without a diaper unless we went out. Then by January just completely went diaper free and he never had accidents. Pooping was dramatic at first but he got over it. It was quite gradual but really worked well in the end, in my opinion.

Following for others advice, but also to share our experience so far. My kiddo is 21 months, and we started very gradually introducing the potty about a month ago. So far, she hasn't actually gone in the potty, but she does sit on it every day. We've had several near misses this week. I'm pregnant and tired, so not pushing it at all. But I think she's very close to getting it.

I suggest just gradually introducing the potty, especially at times you notice he's dry. And if you can do naked time when you are home with the little potty right there, so if you notice him peeing you can quickly whisk him onto the toilet. I think gradual can work too if you aren't stressed about it. I think undies are hard so I wouldn't suggest that to start, but that's just my limited experience.

@macintosh: I never read the oh crap book, just what I've read online. We did one day naked at home but my husband didn't like the nakedness so we put her in undies and it was fine. We made sure to put her on potty first thing in morning, then she would go every hour for a total of 3 times. Ie up at 6, potty and 7 and 8 then she'd be good until after nap. We only stayed home one day then we just continued our regular days. I would say the biggest thing is just being on top of how long it's been and take them before you leave and when you get somewhere

@Mrs. J: I liked the idea of it, but don't you have to stay home for a few days while they go naked? That I can't commit to, I always have errands on weekends and DH can't help him physically if I'm out.

I was thinking that he won't be going into the older 2's room a daycare for a few months, and his current room doesn't have a bathroom in it. I think all of those kids are still in diapers, even though some are closer to 2.5. Is that weird? I know they work on training in the older 2s room, but there hasn't been space for the other kids to move up yet.

We did Oh Crap Potty Training and liked it. I think her advice of no underwear, just commando after some naked time made sense because underwear is like a diaper to their muscles.

I know the 3 day potty training method is popular around here, but after looking into it I don't think I can commit the right amount of time to it.

I'm thinking of trying a more gradual approach, maybe get some reusable training pants or just undies and start trying? DS is 24 months, smart but physically and emotionally pretty typical. He stays dry sometimes longer than I expect him to and he usually tells us right before or after a poop. He's in size 6 diapers already and he hates being changed most of the time, so I'm kind of over it.
