@banana: Thanks! That is fairly similar to my current diet except for the snacks. I tend to snack on fruit or crackers with no protein and unfortunately, I have been drinking a bit of juice. I'll try to build more protein into my snacks and watch my "extra" carbs. Thanks again!!

@chrispygal: I'll speak from my experience because maybe @nskillet has a slightly different version of the same diet?

So basically I always pair up carbs with proteins and I follow this:

Breakfast: 30g carbs + 15g proteins
Lunch: 45g carbs + 21g proteins
Dinner: 45g carbs + 21g proteins

I also eat snacks in between every meal (bw bfast/lunch, lunch/dinner, and bedtime snack) and follow the same thing carb/protein pairing (15g carb/7g protein).

I check all of my food packages to see how many carbs and proteins each item has and eat accordingly. If the item doesn't have enough proteins, I'll eat a stick cheese, handful of nuts or 1 tablespoon of peanut butter with the carb.

So a typical breakfast will be 2 slices of toast + 2 eggs (or 2 tortillas + 2 oz of cheese). Lunch can be a chicken salad sandwich, or tuna sandwich + small salad. Dinner is usually chicken or steak or fish plus small amounts of rice/pasta/potatoes. Snacks are usually fruit + cheese/nuts, or crackers + cheese, popcorn + nuts ,etc.

And I always include veggies with all of my main meals.

I'm never hungry cause i'm always snacking but I seem to not be gaining much weight! So far I've gained 11 lbs and I'm 25 weeks. My husband lost almost 10 lbs now without changing his exercise and just following a similar diet (his isn't as stringent as mine but it still works). I think the main thing is not pigging out on carbs and always always pairing a protein with your carb.

And avoid all juices. Way too much sugar!

@banana: RIGHT?! I've learned a lot and am happy things are the way they are for us! Especially since my husband has diabetes too. It was important and easy for us to do together :)

@chrispygal: Congrats on passing!

@nskillet: Aw, you're welcome! I agree with you 100% that it's been a blessing in disguise. My family has completely changed that way we eat now and it'll be a forever lifestyle change. And it's so awesome to hear that you've been maintaining a good weight growth! I swear that my hips are smaller than they were before being pregnant, if that's even possible! lol. I love the education that I received about sugars and our bodies and I will definitely pass it down to my children too. :) Hope you're doing well!!

@chrispygal: aww thanks! Another Mom
here on hellobee Banana made me feel so much better. Thanks Banana! Once you get over the initial sadness/anger everything falls into place. It is so easy to do when it means creating a healthy environment for your baby to develop.

Also, tons of women fail th 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. If you are diagnosed though, it's ok to feel sad about. I know that feeling all too well!

@Nskillet: Your last paragraph is so true, and I know it's nothing I "did" but moreso how my body is reacting to pregnancy. I'm also 38, which puts me at a much higher risk for GD and other pregnancy related complications too. I feel strongly that I will do whatever I need to do if/once diagnosed - I actually dread the test more than the aftermath. lol. You are an inspiration though, so thank you! And P.S. I have totally craved sugar and juice, and at my last appt measured a couple weeks ahead. Gah!

@chrispygal: I too had a large weight gain and then was measuring ahead. It was the symptoms of the GD showing up. I was also craving sugar sugar sugar! All I wanted was cake and juice lol now that didn't give me diabetes but I know it probabky couldn't have helped me.

I will 100% follow this diet once the baby is here because my husband is diabetic as well. Additionally, I truly feel great on it. A diabetic diet is how all people should eat because all its about is portions and moderation. Its all about understanding what foods do what to affects your sugars. Everyone is different! And you can still eat whatever you want so don't listen to people who say you can't if you're diagnosed. You may just need to have a smaller piece of cake and have wheat products instead of white.. This diet stopped my pregnancy weight gain and actually will result in me losing weight once my baby is born. I will weigh less once she's born than I did when I conceived. I also feel so much more energetic!

It's awesome you love exercise it is a diabetics best friend! Exercise naturally lowers your blood sugar so maybe you decide to have pizza for lunch but then go for a nice 30 minute walk afterwards. Youll most likely be required to eat every two hours with 3 main meals and 2 snacks and checking your blood sugar 4 times a day. 1 fasting and 3 following your meals (after 2 hours). Once diagnosed I had a day at my hospital to meet with a dietician, learn how to use my glucometer, and get some fetal testing for my baby. With the diet I can truthfully say I never felt hungry and when I did I'd snack on cucumbers instead of chips.

GD isn't something you did wrong, it is your body responding to the sugars your placenta makes while pregnant. Some women can handle it but 30-40% of us can't so we are diet or insulin controlled. The best thing you can do if diagnosed is take it seriously. If you do, you can have a very successful and healthy pregnancy. Ask away! I'm pretty passionate about the subject now! :)

Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement! I have my kindle to bring and will have my phone and blackberry handy so hopefully thatwill help with some of the boredom.

@Nskillet: Thank you for your post. I am nervous to be positive, and feel disapointed in myself too. I am overweight, but have been working out consistently for 2 1/2 years and fairly healthy. I have continued exercising through pregnancy, which has been tough, and just this week alone have done pre-natal yoga, spin class, the elliptical machine, and a total body conditioning class. I have gained quite a bit of weight though, which is disheartening too. I appreciate the offer for questions, which I may have if I screen positive. I'm sure a healthier diet would benefit DH as well. Do you think you will stick to that way of eating after LO is born?

I failed my first too, I was stupid and ate a bagel before. It helps me to talk to the person while getting the shots- the guy was very nice and would ask me all about my baby. He even gave me a Minnie Mouse sticker to give to her when she gets older. My only tips are bring something to do, it's very boring waiting there. And bring a snack that you can eat when you're finished and walking out of the place because you'll be starving.

I failed th 1 hour considerably 176 and then failed my 3 hour and was diagnosed with GD at 28-29 weeks pregnant.

Intially, I was really mad/sad. I'm plus sized and blamed myself for not being more proactive losing weight before pregnancy. I also was deathly afraid of finger sticks and having to watch everything I ate. However, GD really has been a blessing in disguise for me. A week after I tested positive my husband also tested positive for type 2 diabetes. It's really made us change our entire mentality about food and health. Since being diagnosed and eating a diabetic diet (which is really just eating healthy and carbs/sugar in moderation) my husband has lost 16 lbs and I have only gained 7 my entire pregnancy. I feel better than I have in ages and checking blood sugars isnt as painful/annoying as I thought it would be.

I've gotten more ultrasounds, have had more appts and regular NOnstress tests for the baby but I've enjoyed hearing her heartbeat weekly and seeing her grow with growth scans. I was fortunate to be entirely diet controlled. No insulin needed.

I know it's scary, and if you have questions or need support let me know!

I failed my 1 hour and took the 3 hour as well. It's twice as much sugar as the 1 hour, but I brought my computer and they had wifi so the waiting wasn't too bad. You won't be allowed to walk around or do anything other than sit quietly. There's no getting around having to be stuck four times unfortunately, but drink as much water as you can the evening before/overnight so at least your veins are easier to find if that's a problem for you - I got stuck extra times because my veins were hiding. I passed my 3 hour as well, hope yours goes well!

It wasn't too bad, I was just really bored. It wasn't fun having my blood drawn 3x either! I would take some reading material or an ipad or something to keep you busy.
I ended up passing my 3 hour. Hope you pass yours too!

So I failed my 1 hour test and have my 3 hour test scheduled for tomorrow morning. I don't do well with needles and am a bit nervous. Anyone else have to do the 3 hour test? If so, can you let me know what it was like? If anyone failed, what has life with Gestational Diabetes been like? I'm trying not to panic knowing that if I do have it, it's not the end of the world but I am still a bit nervous. Any feedback on experiences would be helpful. Thanks!
