@catgirl suggested the Graco Nautilus to me a while ago for my 3 year old; it is forward only so I didn't put DD1 in till she was closer to 3. I like it and most important, she likes it!

@Silva: this is not what you actually asked, but we switched DD (now 6) to a high back booster from a convertible before she turned 5 and she did really well. The high back boosters that convert to the regular boosters are significantly cheaper than the 5 point ones. If you don’t see something you love of the 3-in-1s, then maybe it is easier to get a high back booster/booster instead?

@MrsADS: at this point that 4ever price has dropped a bit (and it's constantly on sale) so the price difference isn't as big as it once was. And the nautilus has a slightly higher harness and belt guide height (though only by a tiny bit). It just would be silly to buy a rear facing seat for an already forward facing kid. Though will be great for a future LO!

And as I said I have and love our 4evers for DD. But she is so tall we will almost definitely need to purchase a britax combination seat for her, so we will most likely never use the booster portion of our 4ever.

@catgirl @silva is the Nautilus a lot cheaper since it's just a FF seat and doesn't RF?

We had a Chicco Keyfit infant seat, but switched DS to the 4ever around 8 months (he was much more comfy). He was RF in the 4ever until just very recently (he's 2y4m - would have preferred longer but he was getting carsick!).

We loved the ease of the chicco Keyfit and *almost* got the Nextfit as the convertible seat, but I really didn't like the high sides of the Nextfit. it would have made it nearly impossible to get him in and out of our small cars RF, plus it would have made him much hotter RF in the car. We are pleased with the 4ever and find it pretty easy to use/install. We'll see what happens when we get to the booster stage, but that's a long way away. Honestly, even if we just use it as a harnessed seat, I think we will be fine with the value we've gotten out of it!

I have two Britax Frontiers and one Graco Nautilus. We needed a lower seat for the sedan, but other than that, I like them equally. We have installed using the seat belt because my son is over the weight limit for LATCH now, but he's still got a long time to go in the Britax seats in terms of being harnessed, he's a bit over 50 pounds now.

It's really important for my son to be in harness mode, even though he is 7, he still moves around too much in the seat for my liking and fidgets with the seat belt. He does complain that none of his friends are in a harness, but he deals with it and buckles himself in and out. I see a lot of kids in backless boosters already, but honestly, think in general people move kids to belted boosters well before they should...at least that's what I have noticed in my circle.

@Silva: no advice as my DD isn't there yet, but I'll join you in the Maxi Cosi burning party. I have two Britax Advocate Clicktights and the Maxi Cosi I have is the devil compared to those. I hate it.

@Silva: that's definitely an option. Some very mature kids can handle a booster right after turning 5 but a lot of kids need a bit more time. Especially for long rides or when they are tired. But obviously you will know her best and what she is capable of!

@catgirl: my daughter turns 5 in april and is pretty good at following rules/chill in the car. I wonder if I should stick it out with this maxi cosi and just get her a kidfit in 6 months or so. I'm a little nervous about her not being in a 5 point, but I do actually think she could handle it. And we could always put her back for a little while if she didn't...

@Silva: the britax clicktight is different than the chicco SuperCinch though they do accomplish the same thing in the end. I would see if you could test a britax with clicktight, it's awesome.

But it sounds like you just really like chicco, so I would wait to see their new seat. It's on their website to look at, just not available to order yet.

Oh, then the 4ever would be great for a new LO. It has a pretty reliable fit for newborns. Though most kids will still need a booster after the 4ever - due to expiration dates but also the 4ever booster is higher up so kids tend to be uncomfortable/outgrow it before being ready for just a seatbelt.

@catgirl: Yeah I looked into and 3 across won't work in the corolla at all. Guess we can strap one of them to the roof
the britax we have was just a basic one, we used it in our second car. definitely not click tight. but my chicco next fit has that and I adore it. I just love that seat in general.

@Silva: I believe the chicco will start at $199, at least that's what has been said. I think it goes to 65 pounds in harness mode but has a relatively tall harness height - taller than graco but a little shorter than britax.

The graco nautilus is a great solid seat. Have the britax seats you had trouble with been clicktights? I find the clicktight seats to be really easy.

For narrow in your Corolla I would look at the at harmony defender or graco tranzitions/wayz - though three across in a corolla would be super challenging.

Also, I would only consider a graco 4ever for a kid that is still rear facing. It would be a waste to get one for a forward facing kid - the nautilus makes way more sense. (I own a 4ever and love it but my DD is still rear facing).

@MrsADS: I hadn't looked at this one- but its pretty cool it can manage all those stages. I don't like bucket seats- we went with a chicco nextfit for my second baby and I LOVE it- but one that goes to a booster might be nice. Although my daughter's maxi cosi is looking pretty rough after 4 years of use...

@catgirl: ooh, maybe i will wait. but i bet it will be pricy. I think that the graco nautilus is top of my list based on some reviews, but then customer reviews on amazon aren't as high as i'd like.
we've had a very frustrating experience with our maxi cosi- in that its hard to tighten/loosen the straps. and I found our britax to be very challenging to install. The chicco's I've had have been SO easy. I just want easy. My kid is pretty average in height/weight, so I'm fairly confident she won't outgrow anything too rapidly.

Well chicco is actually set to come out with a combination seat sometime this month, called the chicco MyFit. Not many people have seen it but everything I have heard about it so far sounds really good. So if you are not in a rush, it could be worth waiting for.

What seats have you considered? What haven't you liked about the ones you have looked at?

Do you love your 3 in 1 car seat? Looking for one that goes from 5-point harness to high back booster to booster (although it seems no-back boosters are pretty cheap, so I guess the back coming off isn't a necessity)

I usually look at Lucie's List and Car Seats for Littles and then Amazon reviews, and I"m not super thrilled with any of the options. Until now we've used and loved Chicco so I have to find a new brand.

we have a mini van so space isn't a concern for the primary seat.
we will also need a more narrow one for our secondary car, a corolla, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that car yet (we are planning for a third, not sure if we will try to get three across or not).
