Couldn't say it better myself. Exactly what @mae: said. If that happens again with LO2, I wonder if I might sleep train earlier (I waited until I was completely broken at 7 months with LO1).

It's so hard because this 12 week switch that is very common happens RIGHT when most moms have to go back to work too!!

I agree with Mae! DD is almost 1, and honestly, I either blame sleep regression, growth spurt, wonder week, teething... It's always something! I learned to just not expect anything to last! Hang in there! The nights are long and hard, just remember this too shall pass!!

My son literally broke me around 10-11 weeks. He went 10 days without sleeping more than 20 minutes at a time and he had reflux and colic and I thought I was going to completely lose my mind. We went to the peds office like 3-4 times during that 10 day period. Then he went back to newborn-like 2-3 hour stretches for another 2 weeks and we then we sleeptrained.

So no advice, but it was very sudden, like a switch went off, as you describe. It will pass - just get as much help as you can.

That's about the time that my son's sleep went crazy - took forever to get to sleep, woke up all the time, took horrible naps and only on me. It was a really rough time and we were travelling for Thanksgiving and then Christmas - we basically went into survival mode (plus my parents were awesome and would hold DS in the mornings so we could get some sleep). After the holidays I talked to the doctor about what could possibly be wrong with him at his 4 month appt - apparently that's just the way babies are sometimes and she reassured me that if I wished to do sleepy training, he would not be forever scarred. We ended up sleep training for falling asleep and he finally started sleeping better. And after I got his nighttime sleep a little better I was able to work on improving his naps (and getting them in the crib instead of on me)

Ultimately, you just need to do what you need to to make it through and remember that this won't last forever.

My 3mo is very similar right now and my first was the same way also. Unfortunately I think it's pretty normal. Good luck mama!!

@Mae: This. Yes.

Maybe wear him as much as possible for a day or two so he can doze and catch up on sleep any time he isn't eating?

I doubt anything is wrong with him. This is something I struggled with so much in LO's first year (and even now when she has a bad night-- I want to know WHYYYY). The truth is... it sort of doesn't matter why. It very well could be an early "4 month" regression. My LO slept awesome right up until 12-13 weeks then lost her damn mind and I was up all. night. long. rocking her night after night. For us it got really bad for a couple weeks then steadily better until 6 mo when it got god-awful again and I gave up and sleep trained her. And even then we had our ups and downs. It's SO FRUSTRATING. Seriously I think the mental aspect of it is so much worse than the sleep deprivation even. why is she doing it? (who the f knows, ever lol) when will she stop? (when she's good and ready, and not a moment sooner) what can I do? (tylenol if I think she's teething, a good solid bedtime and nap time routine, and other wise many prayers and a healthy dose of self pity bc ugh it sucks).

Sorry I can't offer any solid answer. Babies are just weird man. If it makes you feel any better, my parenting philosophy has become: nothing lasts. Not the good or the bad. Every bad bought of sleeping we had (the worst of it) lasted less than 2 weeks. Might not be back to normal but will probably be better.

Good luck!!

I posted a bit about this on my August 2015 postpartum thread but I wanted to get some more thoughts/opinions.

DS is 12 weeks. He got into a pretty good sleep groove for the last month or so - going with 1 or 2 wakeups during the night, naps a little hit or miss but at least one or two really good long naps (1.5-2+ hours) and some shorter ones.

Well, last Tuesday night, he was up MANY MANY times during the night. And then starting last Wednesday, he fought naps and when he would nap, would not sleep longer than 30 minutes. Unfortunately this has continued since then and I am about to go crazy. It's like someone flipped a switch, the change was so dramatic.

The days are awful - he fights and fights and usually cries hysterically until he finally falls asleep. He'll wake up after 30 (maybe 40 minutes), and he's ok for maybe 10-15 minutes. Then, he starts getting cranky and usually progresses to full on hysteria (he's clearly overtired). So all day he has these little catnaps and he's chronically overtired (also awake constantly at night so not getting good sleep).

I don't know what to do! This sounds like it could be the 4 month sleep regression, maybe a month early? Or a growth spurt/wonder week (although, would that affect sleep so drastically?). Sometimes after a short nap, I can rock him back to (very light) sleep and hold him to extend the nap another 15-20 mins, but I can't put him down or he will wake up immediately. And by the end of the day, he's a wreck - just crying and so unhappy all the time.

Any ideas/suggestions?! Should I take him to the doctor, is something wrong? (my gut says no) I am worried about him getting so little sleep!
