We went through this too right around the time I had to go back to work! For us, I knew it wasn't really the bottle; she was just stubborn with the change. We literally just kept trying ALL the tips and tricks... It def took a while but eventually she took it. It was hard breaking when she wasn't eating as much as she needs, but hang in there! I took solace in that at least she could make it up nursing.

@hellobeeboston: just wanted to share that DD2 refused bottles from DH and I. And even FIL when I wasn't even home. I was seriously worried she would reverse nurse those first few weeks at daycare.

I called during lunch and the little stinker took all her morning bottles no problems and even napped like a champ. Little stinker.

Hope your first day goes well!! :goodluck:

@hellobeeboston: Yay!!! I'm so glad to hear this and I hope it continues! Granted we still had some days where DD didn't love the bottle, but the mOmma worked far and away the best for my non bottle loving baby. Good luck!

@hellobeeboston: yay! So glad something is working. I had to really practice with my DD too. Two or three days of hell and even then she only took MAM bottles. After that I kept giving her one bottle a day so she wouldn't refuse again.

We also went through this, the things that helped for us were making sure the bottle was pretty warm (like between 100-105 degrees) and feeding her when she was sleepy.

Hugs! I went through this with my dd too. I will never know exactly what worked but here are the things we did. Fed her in her bouncy chair rather than on a lap. I also got advice to stop trying so many different nipples and just be consistent with one so I went back to using the normal medela nipples and that's what she still uses. She also got ill and I was worried about her dehydrating so I put some water in the bottle and the next day she started drinking from the bottle. If I have another baby I would try water some of the time, if only to save the amount of wasted breastmilk trying to convince her to take a bottle! Good luck! It was super stressful at the time and felt like forever but she adapted and in the meantime daycare used cups or nipples I gave them with the top cut off to kind of 'pour' the milk into her!

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I had a sudden and sharp decline in supply at one point and remember the anxiety of DS not taking a bottle to supplement.

Not sure if this helps, but I basically had to trick him to take the bottle. We made sure to have a bottle ready to go next to me as I was breastfeeding. Then, as soon as he unlatched, we placed the bottle's nipple in his mouth. Sometimes he'd spit it out but sometimes he wouldn't. It seemed to help as eventually he would take several ounces from the bottle. Since undersupply isn't your issue maybe you'd have to try with the bottle right after the first breast.

I hope everything works out quickly! I have a bottle refuser too and have heard lots of people say that they'll learn to take a bottle once they get hungry enough, especially if you're not around. If nothing works, can they try spoon or cup feeding? I was spoon fed as a baby from three months on, though I'm told it was kind of slow. Both of my kids worked out how to drink from a very small cup (a doll cup) very early, especially DD, who still wants nothing to do with bottles.

@hellobeeboston: have you tasted the milk? I have high lipase, so my milk tastes totally gross after 5 hours, even frozen. Taste some from the freezer (not fresh) and check it out. If it tastes bad, PM me. There is a relatively easy solution. Otherwise, keep at it! Hugs, Mama!

We went thru this with dd1. Absolutely refused the bottle until I went back to work and was gone for 10 hours. She only drank 2 oz that whole day and it gradually got better but she still vastly preferred the boob to the bottle. I also vote for the lansinoh momma bottle. That was the least offensive to her, it definitely has a different shape than most bottles. We tried so so hard to get her to take a bottle leading up to my return to work and she would scream her face off. But it worked out eventually! Sure is stressful though.

@tiramisu: I know, us too! I went through so many others first, and that was the only one she liked. My lo did eventually stop taking bottles again a few months later because of silent reflux, but by that time she was old enough for a straw cup. For like 4 months after I went back though, that mOmma bottle was amazing!

We worked on bottles for 3 months with LO2, with no luck, before she started daycare. Once daycare started, it took about three weeks (only a few hours a day to start, building up to 7 hours; and only 3 days a week) before she started taking a bottle. Now, several months later, she does fine, although she never drinks as much there as when she spends the day with my husband.

During the first three weeks, the daycare providers were always willing to try alternatives--syringe, spoon, milk popsicles--so that she wouldn't be too unhappy. There was one day where they called to see if I would be willing to come in to nurse her, because she was really hungry and unhappy enough that they were having trouble trying any alternate methods. (I was nearby that day, so I did go in.)

It was stressful, but not as stressful as I was expecting. Having daycare providers who I trusted also made it much easier for me.

@Foodnerd81: thanks! Yeah, bouncy seat yields the least amount of screaming. And def doing barely an ounce per bottle!

He sucks fine on human parts, but when it comes to plastic nipples/paci's it's like he totally forgets. His tongue goes out and he makes a disgusted face. Slip a finger in and he's good. It's weird. I just saw this finger feeder thing that I'm considering ordering for DH, but it's not a good long term solution.

My LO went through a bottle strike for a while and what finally helped was putting her in a seat (car seat or bouncy seat) to feed her- you couldn't be holding her or she would get pissed.

My other advice is only put like an ounce of milk in the bottle while you are working on it so if he refuses, you only waste an ounce, not a whole bottle.

I've heard it usually isn't the bottle that's the real problem, but that momma one has enough recommendations that could be worth it.

@hellobeeboston: I started this exact thread when I was going back to work in June. His first day back he went 5 hours refusing a bottle but eventually took 8 oz in the 8 hours I was gone. The second day he took about 9 oz, and from then on he would actually take a bottle. It was hard leaving him not knowing if he would eat, but it all worked out.

My DD went through this too but eventually ended up taking her bottle at daycare. The first day or two she screamed at the bottle, but after that was fine. The one that worked best for us was the Lansinoh Momma. I had tried a ton of other bottles, including Como tomo, avent, adiri, etc. It was so stressful in the weeks leading up to daycare, but it all worked out and she didn't starve.
