My third baby was grumpy and colicky but she progressively got happier and chilled out from around three months! Girlfriend is now six months and everybody comments on how smiley and happy she is! I could barely put the poor child down in the first couple of months (so much crying!) but life got much easier once she could see things and grab at toys on her play gym and even better when she could use the exersaucer.

Trust me when I tell you that this stage doesn’t last forever and you will get through it! Do what you need to do to survive and don’t worry about anything apart from the essential stuff that needs to happen.

@PurplePumps: this is completely normal. my little one is 3 weeks and basically doing the same thing. Newborns can be like that, that's how my first two kiddos were in the newborn stage. They love being held at this stage or being worn in a newborn friendly baby carrier. We recently bought the solly baby wrap so I can wear him and still have my hands free.

I had the alert baby that didn’t fuss, but wasn’t necessarily happy. He was held all the time. Some babies cry and some don’t.

@PurplePumps: Normal!
45 mins awake is the max time and that includes feeding and changing and burping and all that stuff. So by the time you’re done feeding it’s basically time to sleep again.
Don’t worry, he’ll be awake for longer before you know it. Enjoy the sleepiness now :-)

Thanks for the reassurance that this is pretty normal. We were losing our minds. I was thinking surely he can open his eyes and not be crying, right?!!

DS is just 8 weeks and only in the last 2-3 weeks has he really had awake time besides eating. He's been very sleepy compared to DS1.

I'm sure soon he will wake up a bit more.

It sounds pretty normal. I know it's so hard because you're still recovering, hormones are crazy, you're sleep deprived and just feel like a milk cow. Big hugs! It will get better!

Sounds totally normal for a baby that young. Give it a few more weeks and he'll start to stay awake a bit more.

E very much used 30-40 min of her awake time to eat at that age. It took until she was eating more efficiently and also was able to be awake 45-60 min total at around 6-8 weeks that we had meaningful awake time.

I think the 45 minutes awake time people talk about includes eating. My son inevitably spent the entire time he was awake eating too. I don't think he really took an even minor interest in anything else while awake until 7-8 weeks...

My newborns were not awake at all besides eating until like 6 weeks. And even then it was like minutes a time. Sounds normal to me. I would focus on waking baby up to getting good feedings in and then swaddle that baby and put them somewhere dark and quiet to sleep. Eventually it will fall into a routine/schedule

Congratulations on your new bundle! 💙

The way you described your son fit my DD (now 10) EXACTLY. I felt so alone (and sleep deprived as I was always either feeding or "entertaining" her.). Come to find out, she had acid reflux (due to hernias) and gas. She was fine with my BM but I had production issues so I supplemented with formula, which had to be switched to Alimentum. She was also given ranitidine syrup for her reflux. Everything was of minimal help until she was older. She was, simply, a fussy, colicky baby until 3 mos when she became "less fussy." 😉🤣 By 6/7 mos, things were substantially better. I'm not suggesting that your LO has digestive issues or colic, rather, I'm reaching out to say you aren't alone and it DOES get better with time. Some babies are simply fussy and environmentally aware (sensitive) and others are very demanding at all times but, with time, they find their rhythm and niche. Cherish the 5 minutes of "happy baby" and know this phase shall pass. 😉 Good luck, mama!

@PurplePumps: Hey! I saw that he arrived!!! Congrats! :heart:

My DS did these three things but was disproportionately awake so I would consider the sleepiness a blessing. It might change after he’s 4-6 weeks. Around 2-3 weeks old, DS developed gas. We had some definitely long afternoons of screaming crying. I thought it would tire him out, but no. It seemed to let him work through the gas until he wanted to eat again. Anyway, as long as your DS is gaining, it seems normal to me. If he seems to be crying from gas, the ped can evaluate the seriousness. Ours just grew out of it when the gastro tract matured around 4 months...and then was just awake a lot.

LO is 3.5 weeks old and so far, that's his 3 states. Asleep, or if he's awake, he's either eating or crying. He's practically never awake and just looking around and not crying, day or night so all i seem to do is feed him, which puts him to sleep, and then hope he sleeps as long as possible. So he ends up being awake long enough to eat, then right back to sleep. Is this normal?? I feel like everyone else has happy alert awake newborns, and I get maybe 5 minutes of that a day, not the 45-60 minutes of awake time between naps.
