DS 1 got to 3 and 4 hour stretches by about 2 months. DS 2 is 6 weeks and has only done 4 hours a few times. He's been eating every 2.5 - 3 for the past few weeks and before that it was even shorter. And worse sometimes it takes us 45 min to get him back in bed! But he's gained 4 lb in 5 weeks.

Hang in there! As their stomachs can handle more and once they get through all those first growth spurts they'll stretch out.

@pinkcupcake: Have you been to see an LC to do a weighed feed at all? Maybe he is constantly wanting to eat because he is not transferring enough milk during the feeds and then is hungry again shortly after. How long does he nurse for each session?

ETA: some babies are just hungry though :silly: My DD was 6'13 when she was born and was almost 10lbs at 8 weeks!

@mrswin: nope, no stretch longer than 2 hours, day or night. He does eat a TON and is gaining 2 oz a day so I think maybe he's just a really big eater and can't go longer without feeding? :(

@pinkcupcake: My DD had a big growth spurt around that time which could be part of it.

Is he doing any stretch that is longer than 2 hours during the day?? Sometimes you have to help them shift the "longer" stretch to some point in the nighttime hours. At that age we got a 4 hour stretch from around 11pm to 3am

@pinkcupcake: we borrowed a rock in play from a friend when DD was 6 weeks old and she started sleeping 4-5 hour stretches in it. We moved her to her crib when she could roll over, around 12 weeks.

It sucks but that's totally normal. My DS is 6.5 weeks old and just started stretching out to 3-4 hours and even one 6 hour. Even with that sometimes he's up every 1-2 hours. Newborn sleep is so hard! Hang in there mama!

This seems normal to me. My son eats every 2-3 hours during the day, but will eat every 3-4 at night. He is 5 weeks old tomorrow (bottle fed breastmilk and formula).

@meadow: we're they sleeping in 3 hour increments before 1 month and you were waking them up to feed? My son wakes up every 2 hours on the dot to eat and I can't get him to stretch it out to 3-4 hours :( Wondering when that starts to happen ...

Going crazy here -.-

My 3 week old is still sleeping in 2 hour chunks. It's like clockwork.

When do they start having longer stretches? I have a 4 year old too so I can't nap during the day and I'm seriously sleep deprived :(

Btw he is being breastfed.
