DS was a very alert newborn. He basically only catnapped in 20 min intervals until he was 5 months old and started napping in 1-2 hour stretches (and definitely not STTN). He also wanted to be held a lot. When I talked to the ped about it she said it was unusual, but since he was eating and growing normally, not to worry about it. At almost 3, he's an excellent sleeper now and as healthy as they come.

It's funny because our new baby is 10 days old and is the typical sleepy newborn, to the point that I was worried about it for the first 4 days that she was sleeping too much since she is nothing like her brother.

Sounds like DD. She was very alert and didn't sleep much for the first several weeks. DD is currently 8 weeks old. She only naps if being held, so the carrier has been a lifesaver.

Weissbluth says not to worry about any sort of nap schedule or anything like that before six weeks. He says that in those early weeks babies basically sleep when they need to sleep and you don't need to stress about bad habits or anything.

@shopaholic: I'm excited to use the ktan but it says he needs to weigh 8 lbs... Last week he was 6 lb 13 oz, but gaining quickly given his eating habits. Maybe I'll push the limits w ktan and try it sooner rather than later

@Revel: Probably. Ugh. Yesterday she got 2 naps: 23 min. and 25 min. wth?

@ChitownRo: @yin:'s solution worked for us in those early days! Baby-wearing naps in the K'tan or Ergo! Totally saved me most days!

There is only so much you can do. I had a non-sleepy baby and was similarly frustrated but my husband reminded me to a certain point it's up to the baby! Hang in there!

DS2 is 5 weeks old and also has long awake periods. I try not to worry about it. Usually he is cooperative and will play in his play mat or sit in his bouncer. If not, I put him in a carrier so that I can get some stuff done around the house.

If we skip naps LO is very fussy, but she fights sleep so sometimes I let her stay up rather than fight with her to force a nap. She will usually take a longer nap after her next feeding. As long as your LO is happy, I wouldn't worry! I just know that sleep begets sleep so if you are having a hard time with nighttime sleep I might try to get more naps in. Also, if the constant holding is rough, maybe try baby wearing?

Yeah, my LO never did the "sleepy baby" thing either. I want to say it was around 10-12 weeks when we started getting more consistent naps and now at 18 months old she's a great napper/sleeper.

LO has almost always gotten less sleep than what the literature says is an ideal schedule. guess i don't have an ideal baby--ha! anyway, like @Bookish: said, try to get him to nap when he shows sleepy cues but don't stress too much about it. for me, i was a ball of stress because i could tell LO was tired but he refused to nap. refused.

I thought that too! In our case, "sleepy baby" seemed to be a mythical legend, like the Unicorn! lol. I always tried to get LO to nap according to what the age-normal sleep patterns said, but she'd want to be awake a lot too. Still have this issue.

@ChitownRo: G was a super awake newborn as well... she'd have stretches where she stayed awake for 2-4 hours as well! I remember asking about this as well, and apparently some babies just want to be awake! Just do all you can to make sure you read his sleepy cues and catch the naps where you can...but don't worry too much about it :)

Sorry for the constant questions...

My LO is 20 days old. He is eating like a champ (EPing, drank 30 oz yesterday). However, his sleep is odd. I thought newborns slept constantly. He will have two prolonged awake periods each day. Normally from 10p-12:30 am and in the late morning/early afternoon for 2.5 hrs. He will eat, I'll change him and then he just stays awake until his next feeding 2.5 hours later. He is content and alert during these times; however, he wants to constantly be held. If I try to put him in his bassinet/swing/RnP during this time, he will cry.

Should I try to force a nap? I do swaddle him and try to minimize stimulation, but he just wants to look around at his environment
